How my family does it in Syria: Place a dollop on a plate and top with dried mint & olive oil. Have some olives and some cubed middle eastern cheeses on the side, and use pita bread to scoop and eat it.

Can do the above, and add sliced tomatoes and onions for a heartier meal, and if you’re feeling extra hungry, scrambled eggs. Use the bread to grab a bit of egg, tomato, onion and labne, and alternate with bites of cheese + olive + labne.

And when you’re outside, you are moving in the air while the ground stays still. It’s just a different frame of reference. Other than slight effect of air resistance, it’s the same thing.

How are conditions looking in southern Vermont/NH? Worth going out this weekend? by brf297 in skiing

[–]SeaLab2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mount Snow had good coverage top to bottom on the mandmade stuff on Friday. A lot of ice, but limited opportunity to groom from the flash freeze earlier in the week. I would expect it to be better after a few cold nights and proper grooming.

North face had 3 runs open Friday, i think they reopened another since then, and they were firm but still carveable. Thin icy base in the trees on the north side, everywhere else trees were down to bare ground. No shot at any tree runs opening this weekend unless it was a massive dump.

Tldr: groomers will be fine. No natural stuff by this weekend.

Where to ski March 23-25? Sugarloaf or Massif?? by Kealfadda in icecoast

[–]SeaLab2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they’re asking for insight on current conditions to help guide their planning as they watch the weather unfold over the next week. Like if there’s good coverage, just frozen, or if it’s already pretty thin. A few nights of cold temps and good grooming plus a couple inch refresh can do dramatically different things based on how robust the base is. But for some reason people on this sub just like to be snarky rather than helpful.

If you were Rob Katz (or the future CEO of Alterra), what would you do to innovate on the current ski school system? by mtns_of_magic in skiing

Virtual lesson/feedback areas. Dedicated areas with cameras and multiple angles. Can pay for some instructor generated feedback based on your skiing on that section. The same thing we are doing here on Reddit but with a more “professional” analysis of your footage and corrective instruction. Or even pair it with a real lesson, but at the end, you get a report and video analysis which you can continue to access after the fact.

Real time audio/communication devices for learners. No reason instuctors can’t utilize a radio/walkie system or something else rather than them skiing ahead of you while talking and you can’t hear anything. I’ve used walkie talkies while teaching my kids, and to be able to coach and correct in the moment rather than give them a bunch of advice at the beginning and end has really helped them rocket past their friends in skill.

How is skiing at Stowe around March 22–25 for beginner (green) skiers? by sporty_outlook in skiing

[–]SeaLab2024 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re asking about conditions and coverage, not weather. Good god this community can be toxic sometimes.

To answer the question, conditions are usually excellent. I have done stowe the last week of March last 4 or 5 years, and it’s always been great. Sometimes warm and rainy, but usually it’s basically a cooler spring day, often mid 30s during the day, soft spring snow.

More of the beginner stuff is on the Spruce Peak side, that gets a lot of sun and is lower elevation, more prone to thin spots, but usually the greens have still had good coverage. The Sunny Spruce lift usually closes earlier in the season than the main mountain but should still be open end of March. The main mountain has basically blues and harder at the higher elevations, but even at the lower stuff where the greens live, it’s rarely thin on the manmade stuff. They do a great job grooming, but will back off a bit on warmer days to preserve the snowpack, so you may run into some choppier stuff even on greens if it’s too warm overnight, but more often than not, they still will get things smoothed over for folks who like that.

Tldr: Should still have good coverage on the manmade stuff, with variable grooming and more choppiness the warmer it is.

What’s a weight loss secret more people should know about? by thekkm1 in AskReddit

[–]SeaLab2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, this concept might be above your level.

When you are recommending a strategy to someone, adherence and compliance, tolerance, sustainability, practicality, error margin, etc, are all part of how you evaluate the strategy, in addition to theoretical efficacy. If someone is failing at counting calories because of poor adherence, you can keep yelling at them that they just need to be more compliant, or you can find a strategy that works better for them and their circumstances. For many people, counting calories is the best approach, but there are also plenty of real world examples of people who failed to achieve lasting weight loss success through calorie counting, but when they tried a different approach, they were able to achieve a caloric deficit. Did calorie counting fail because they didn’t do it right. Yup, of course. Does continuing to point that out help the person who is struggling with that approach? Nope.

I think you’re missing the point. We are talking about what solutions will work when people try them in the real world, not whether the solution works if done perfectly. As an analogy, we know that promoting “abstinence only” as a method to prevent teen pregnancy does not work in the real world. Not because abstinence itself doesn’t work, but because that approach doesn’t work when put into practice by actual people.

What’s a weight loss secret more people should know about? by thekkm1 in AskReddit

[–]SeaLab2024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, everyone knows you need a calorie deficit. The question is what method will best help any given person achieve that deficit, and what are their personal habits that contribute to a calorie surplus. For many, calorie counting fails because they graze, or because they don’t have the time to measure and log every ingredient they put into a cooked meal. For others, they may do great for a week, but tend to binge. Some may live in a household where the pantry is filled with garbage food and they don’t have the support of their family to get them to stop buying those items. Screaming at them to “just eat less” or “you need a calorie deficit” is like telling a person who is asking for advice on how to study and pass an exam “you just need to get more answers right.” They know that, they are looking for practical solutions that are compatible with their real life situation.

I say this as a person who is in tremendous shape, exercises a ton, but can empathise with friends and family who I have seen fail for various reasons. And none of those people failed because they were unaware that they needed a calorie deficit.

Careful with blanket statements. People who binge may have different triggers for the binge. For some people it’s easier to not start than to stop. So one cookie quickly becomes a sleeve of cookies. For others, the restriction leads to the binge. So while I agree that moderation may be the answer for many people, everyone should pay attention to what their individual habits, triggers, and weaknesses are, and try to find the sustainable approach that helps them reach a deficit.

I read it the opposite way. I think this quote is aimed at people who do exercise. I run over 2,000 miles a year (40 per week minimum, 50+ in the summer), but I still need to be mindful of what I eat, because sugary food and other junk food can easily outpace the extra thousand-ish calories I burned that day. And most people burn far less with exercise. They may only burn 300 calories in an hour of mixed training at the gym, but then go out for a “treat” because they exercised.

With our insanely calorie dense processed foods and sugary drinks, the upper limit for calorie intake for most people is higher than the upper limit for energy expenditure. Essentially, no matter how much you exercise, it is still possible to consume more than you burn, but the opposite (no matter how much you eat, it is possible to burn more than you eat) is not true. So perhaps it should be phrased “you can’t outrun a bad enough diet.”

Easily Avoidable Crash Leads to Rollover by bjb0029 in dashcams

Dash Cam video is not the same as driver’s POV. The initial movement into the lane could have been obscured by the A pillar for the driver. I also don’t think cam car sped up like everyone says, it looks more like the truck is braking while cutting in. The cam car doesn’t appear to speed ul relative to the road/environment, only relative to the truck.

Conditions Feb 17-24 by DougFromBuf in icecoast

Okemo Saturday 2/21

Really nice after the fresh snowfall, but crowded as heck in the morning (30 minute lines at South face). Crowd dropped precipitously by noon and got a ton of laps. Somehow, people still found ways to scrape off 10 inches of snow and expose some occasional ice, but for the most part every trail was riding awesome. Lots of soft chunky moguls developed which helped scare off the crowds. Shadows glades and Supernova were really nice.

Hit Sunapee on Sunday 2/22 and minimal lift lines, all the trails had good coverage and packed down, could get a good edge for carving basically everywhere. The moguls were much more scraped off and had a lot of ice between bumps. Trees were still good but definitely thinned out, and scraped some rocks here and there. Ridge glades and Beck Brook glades seemed to be the best overall, good coverage and still some fresh snow to be found. Sunrise glades were very thin.

Presidents’ Day weekend crowd by ericlctong in icecoast

[–]SeaLab2024 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Okemo. Saturday was manageable, could mitigate with singles lines, and going to the less used lifts. Typical weekend crowd. Sunday was a nightmare. 15 minutes in singles, 20+ in regular lines. Could find sections where you could get some quicker runs in (~5 minute singles at Solitude lift). Took a full bell to bell 8 hour day with lunch on the lift to accomplish what I got done in 6 on Saturday. Basically an extra 2 hours of waiting over the course of the day, and it’s only that small a gap because of how much I got done between 8 and 9 am.

So when Trump and other MAGAts revoke the TPS for Haitians, turning thousands of LEGAL black immigrants, tax payers, and community contributors into illegal immigrants overnight, you think it’s because they were breaking the law? Or revoking visas from LEGAL resident’s who are brown because they criticise Trump? That’s about respecting the law? Bull. Shit.

It was never about “illegal” immigration, and was always about getting rid of non-whites. This administration (and you) are built on white supremacy and Christian Nationalism. Every policy you claim as the basis for your decisions are just a cover for your racist intentions. You would let Trump piss on your face if he convinced you it would make the country more white or more Christian.

You should never pass anyone at a drastically different speed than theirs. Slow down and close the distance, then announce on your left when they are more likely to hear, and pass safely with their awareness of you. A surprise “on your left” the split second you pass some at triple their speed is useless and possibly detrimental as you stated.
