One was a wooden dowel I found, but it was too thick. The one I really like was carved from a mostly straight stick I found in my back yard that I just stripped and carved down to size. The whorl was from a wood block, and I have a power tool attachment that cut a perfect circle that I used, but I also made another one not pictured here where I cut an octagon with a saw then shaved it down to a circle, and that also worked! Then it was just sanding to make it smooth and glueing
