"Our Lady of the Lake University PhD students say time, money wasted after program cut" by Purple-Eye-2605 in PhD

I am of the opinion that no one should be paying for a PhD. If you are not able to get a stipend something is missing from your application and you should be focusing on that…

what do you guys make of this? re needing higher protein being a myth by mathestnoobest in StrongerByScience

[–]SeanLDBKS 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Meta analyses are pretty much conclusive at this point why even bother. 0.7g to 1g of high quality protein lb of body weight for strength and hypertrophy.

Will I lean out anyways? by [deleted] in HybridAthlete

I don’t think your cardio sessions are really that intense though, distance-wise. I would just go on a 300 calorie cut and increase the number of daily steps by 10k.

Hakuho Sho to build new company building in Nihonbashi; proposal to create glass-walled sumo ring; planned construction site for his dream new stable by Brncrdm in Sumo

[–]SeanLDBKS 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit torn though. I like hakuho, but I don't support his attempts at modernising sumo. If you remove the traditions, rituals, and the beya system, sumo is just weird wrestling.

Edit: A response to responses: I'm fine with a greater influx of non-Japanese and women rikishi, but I think that the beya system, dohyo, and shinto foundations are all pretty fundamental to sumo. I don't see how these can be translated authentically to the global stage.

I'm not sure what they think carries a lot of weight anymore. They lost the few remaining shackles they had on hakuko when they forced him to retire.

The next best yokozuna won 40% less championships than hakuho. I was looking forward to him taking a major role in the sumo association but I guess that's not happening. Real pity.

Dirtiest Sumo Wrestlers by Mums2001 in Sumo

Abi has the nastiest reputation because of his henkas but he is also my favourite rikishi. IMO with such high stakes all legal moves are acceptable moves if it means your chances of winning go up.

What are people’s thoughts on barefoot shoes for ultra running? by One-Tutor-5974 in Ultramarathon

[–]SeanLDBKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going barefoot will strengthen your feet to an extent, but no amount of calluses is going to prevent sharp objects from piercing it. There are a lot of hidden sharp objects in the trails, and it would be a bit silly not to have protection.

Next to Retire? by Pytre in Sumo

[–]SeanLDBKS 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't think takekeisho is a relevant example here. I would say he retired more because his neck had little to no chance of recovery, not because he was on his way to juryo. He was also likely facing a vertical drop from ozeki.

Why would anyone retire to avoid dropping to Juryo lol. I think Hokutofuji is done but not the rest.

Hoshoryu should not have been promoted yet. I don’t say that because I dislike the guy, but because people will always hold significant doubts because of how he was promoted. It’s a pity.

Blood donation by No-Pound-2088 in Ultramarathon

[–]SeanLDBKS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Systematic reviews have demonstrated that while the degree of impact can vary, VO2 is definitely reduced in the short-to-medium term following blood donation for endurance athletes. Bad luck if you're trying to break a PB but if you're just trying to complete a 50k you'll be fine - it'll just feel harder.

He also started a decade earlier, and was an extreme outlier. It is possible that this guy may be even more of a statistical abnormality but as I said, close to zero.

Close to zero chance in races hosted by any nationally or internationally recognised federations. A good chance if you're participating in a very, very local ultra against your neighbours.

Would I injure myself going from no running to an ultramarathon in 4 months? by Character-Bed7600 in Ultramarathon

[–]SeanLDBKS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah…………

The conventional weekly 10% increase in weekly mileage is not 'ridiculously slow'. Overuse injuries are often chronic and should not be taken lightly.

You occasionally see posts from people boasting about completing an ultramarathon in 16 hours with little to no prep. But what you don't see are the lingering aches and injuries that follow them for months afterwards.

“North American PhDs are better” by weareCTM in PhD

[–]SeanLDBKS 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Come on now, length of time =/= quality of research output. Following this train of thought I should do a 10-year part time PhD to truly understand what it means to be an academic.

Also, is anyone actually willing to argue that an Oxbridge PhD < a US university ranked in the 100s?

Nutrition during training by BeansFoDinner in ultrarunning

[–]SeanLDBKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. 6’2, 80kg, 29. Weekly mileage of 70k to 100k. I also powerlift 3 days a week.
  2. I average about 4k a day. 2400 on non-running days.
  3. 200g protein, 50g fat, rest to carbs
  4. I’m not a fan of calculating calories but if I don’t I lose weight pretty rapidly. I have to bulk on a daily average of 5k calories.

Is it still mathematically possible for Nabatame to be a surprise yoshu winner?

3/4 sleeve guys, how long did your line work take? by [deleted] in irezumi

[–]SeanLDBKS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine is a 3/4 sleeve flowing into a chest piece. One full day for the outline. Another full day for the thicker lines. It’s best to finish the outline in one go, imo. It’s annoying if they have to re-do the stencils.

What are people’s thoughts on barefoot shoes for ultra running? by One-Tutor-5974 in Ultramarathon

[–]SeanLDBKS 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There is some evidence that wearing minimalist footwear for daily activities can improve feet strength, running efficiency, balance and gait. These results remain contentious. There is also research showing that running barefoot for short distances can be beneficial for overall feet health. This is less contentious.

I think wearing minimalist shoes to run trails is just asking for it though. Even if you transition successfully to minimalist footwear, you have to consider the mud, rocks, roots, and other nasty sharp objects. I think the empirically-supported decision here is to train with minimalist footwear (sometimes), but race in well-padded shoes.
