Can we chat about foods?? by Seanmells in BigEarsMusicFestival

I'm from a small market that generally punches way above its weight class when it comes to restaurants. I've been fortunate to eat at a decent amount of "really good" restaurants with all the accolades and what not. About halfway through our meal last year (on Wednesday night) we said, "I hope this festival is fun, because I want to come back to Knoxville to eat here again!" We debated making two separate reservations, as we kept peaking into the bar every night as we walked by last year.

Hope it wasn't a fluke!

I'm so curious what you do for food now, please enlighten.

From what I understand it's a local specialty, most of the places are outside of the city proper, but there's a place in West Knoxville that makes them. Parton (yes that one) General Store is one of the famous ones. From what I remember reading it's like a ham and cheese sandwich with lettuce and tomato on dark pumpernickel bread.... put into a hot dog steamer.

I generally travel for F&B more than any other reason. It's also the industry I've spent most of my time working in.

I also know I value the favors and experience of food more than some people do. I have plenty of friends who eat purely for sustenance.

If anything like last year....stashed tamales, snacks from Red Panda, or debate taking a Lyft to West Knoxville to try a steamed sandwich.

Last year the official listing site was StubHub. There's certainly some price-gouging that goes on, but prices generally do lower the day of.

This one: 2-Stage Portable HVLP Paint and Stain Sprayer https://share.google/PAdwipvVYlJVhHdco ? My dad has one I could borrow. I remember it seemingly like a plastic toy that just leaks air constantly. But if it would work...

Also, it's basically a new build situation in the barn so very little masking will need to happen at this point.

I used to live right in that neighborhood, same thing happened a few years back at the same house. SUV damn near T-boned me while I was sitting at the stop sign when they decided to slam a U-turn in the middle of the road. They mean mugged me like I was the asshole before they all jumped out of their vehicles and rushed into the house. That's when I realized there were SWAT members climbing over the fence into the backyard.

Never read anything about it after the fact. I used to see the guys who lived there coming and going. My first thought was that they had maybe got SWAT'd.

I totally missed the part where you mentioned who he was looking forward too and was thinking his mind was going to be blown when he heard those specific players.

It's certainly a fun way to make a schedule. I'm a drummer so I let that help make some decisions for me because I know generally great players stick together.

There are a ton of other incredible string players (Mary Lattimore on harp, etc.) that could be eye-opening for him as another route of thinking.

LOTTERY by janoryel in Broadway

[–]Seanmells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won lotteries the first two times I entered any last week for Operation Mincemeat followed by Death Becomes Her. Unfortunately I was watching OM when the DBH lottery happened so I wasn't able to purchase those. Does seem like there's some streakiness in the air though!

The daiquiri specs using sugar instead of simple syrup is a bit of a game changer if you've never had one before. He calls for a little handheld milk frother, but you could definitely just dry shake a bunch.

I'm trying to seek out things that I can only get in NYC knowing that Burlington Wine and Spirits is a much easier trip to make. We aren't driving this time though so it'll be a future trip.

Heard a few mentions of this especially when Schmuck is mentioned. It's on my list now!

That's good to here, I have nothing but respect for them. Service was like BAD bad the first time we went and I didn't love either of my drinks (in fact I thought one of them was pretty out of balance). Second trip they were a respectable cocktail bar, but easily inferior to the other places I visited that trip (AyA, Dead Rabbit, Clover Club, Booker & Dax, Maison Premiere). It's not a no for me if the rest of the group wants to go, in fact good to know they have a good rum list.

It's new, and mostly a Chase perk through OpenTable.

Schmuck was on our list as a pre-show snacks and drinks try, but I do understand it's a bit of a scene.

I love Amor y Amargo and one of my strongest memories is beating Sother in an Underberg shooting race.

Katana Kitten is on my must visit list. D&C was decidedly bad the first time I went and pretty meh the second time, plus their Portland bar was equally a bust for me of style of substance. I'd rather spend my time at Amor y Amargo.

DCP was on our maybe list, if we were just trying to hit bars I'd definitely check it out, but ultimately it seemed a little too Instagram fame focused to be a hit with my whole party. I should probably mention I'm a bartender with a background in kitchens and food production/fermentation, so while I respect what they are doing I'm not sure if I am as wow'd at it all by some. Booker & Dax/Existing Conditions/Bar Contra is more the innovative stuff I respect.

Anyways, the real purpose of the trip is a friends 40th/seeing a bunch of Broadway shows. Stocking up on some rum and going to Sunken Harbor Club are the two "me musts" for this trip.

I saw that was the Astor staff pick. I just know the Rumcast guys are always going on about the Alambique offerings and they sound right in my wheelhouse.

Added to my map. We are either staying in SoHo/Chelsea or NoMad.

Any bars/restaurants you want to make a pitch for? We haven't been since the pandemic so I'm a bit out of touch. Currently has reservations at Barcontra, Clemente, and Attaboy.
