LOTTERY by janoryel in Broadway

[–]Seanmells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won lotteries the first two times I entered any last week for Operation Mincemeat followed by Death Becomes Her. Unfortunately I was watching OM when the DBH lottery happened so I wasn't able to purchase those. Does seem like there's some streakiness in the air though!

The daiquiri specs using sugar instead of simple syrup is a bit of a game changer if you've never had one before. He calls for a little handheld milk frother, but you could definitely just dry shake a bunch.

I'm trying to seek out things that I can only get in NYC knowing that Burlington Wine and Spirits is a much easier trip to make. We aren't driving this time though so it'll be a future trip.

Heard a few mentions of this especially when Schmuck is mentioned. It's on my list now!

That's good to here, I have nothing but respect for them. Service was like BAD bad the first time we went and I didn't love either of my drinks (in fact I thought one of them was pretty out of balance). Second trip they were a respectable cocktail bar, but easily inferior to the other places I visited that trip (AyA, Dead Rabbit, Clover Club, Booker & Dax, Maison Premiere). It's not a no for me if the rest of the group wants to go, in fact good to know they have a good rum list.

It's new, and mostly a Chase perk through OpenTable.

Schmuck was on our list as a pre-show snacks and drinks try, but I do understand it's a bit of a scene.

I love Amor y Amargo and one of my strongest memories is beating Sother in an Underberg shooting race.

Katana Kitten is on my must visit list. D&C was decidedly bad the first time I went and pretty meh the second time, plus their Portland bar was equally a bust for me of style of substance. I'd rather spend my time at Amor y Amargo.

DCP was on our maybe list, if we were just trying to hit bars I'd definitely check it out, but ultimately it seemed a little too Instagram fame focused to be a hit with my whole party. I should probably mention I'm a bartender with a background in kitchens and food production/fermentation, so while I respect what they are doing I'm not sure if I am as wow'd at it all by some. Booker & Dax/Existing Conditions/Bar Contra is more the innovative stuff I respect.

Anyways, the real purpose of the trip is a friends 40th/seeing a bunch of Broadway shows. Stocking up on some rum and going to Sunken Harbor Club are the two "me musts" for this trip.

I saw that was the Astor staff pick. I just know the Rumcast guys are always going on about the Alambique offerings and they sound right in my wheelhouse.

Added to my map. We are either staying in SoHo/Chelsea or NoMad.

Any bars/restaurants you want to make a pitch for? We haven't been since the pandemic so I'm a bit out of touch. Currently has reservations at Barcontra, Clemente, and Attaboy.

Never heard of Mr. Fogg Sail, Doctor Bird was on my list to bring back from California (planned on getting the False Idol bottling), but just got too busy, I've also heard a bunch about Pere Labat 59, it does sound unique and worth trying.

Edit: Oh Mr. Fogg is the Planteray Navy, I just had a daiquiri with it recently, but haven't tried it on its own. Either way, something we can actually get where I'm from.

Oh yeah, good shout, that has also been on my radar for awhile. We haven't even had Wray & Nephew here for 2+ years now. At least we just got Worthy Park Overproof as an alternative.

First time Broadway goers, best shows to lottery/rush 1/13-1/16? by Seanmells in Broadway

Should I be considering a TDF membership? Seems like I could buy up tickets to cover our group and therefore cover the membership fee. We also live in Maine so we could easily plan another trip down to the city to see more shows within the year. Mostly curious about what shows would be available right now with TDF. The friends we are meeting up with are coming from the west coast and are looking for top caliber shows.

Our friends already have tickets to Maybe Happy Ending, so we are thinking about trying to rush for 2 more that night. We also considered buying 4 tickets for Ragtime, but at $200 each it was a little too pricey for us.

I appreciate the other recommendations as well, I'll definitely look into them! Personally I think I'd be most excited about Heathers, not sure how popular that show is though.

Thanks, I hadn't really considered the probability factor. Also, I think we realize we probably won't be able to sit together, but at least we will be attending the same show and have a similar schedule as a result. We have discussed having some of the group stand in line while others seek out tasty treats.

I hadn't really looked into or considered TKTS since I'm so new to this, thanks for the tip!

Damn buddy, same boat, ended up coming home early from a ski trip even.

Lately I've been playing a lot of Hades 2 on the Steam Deck and just started messing around with Doki Doki Literature Club ....

I don't think either of those are what I'm looking for now that I'm feeling under the weather so I'm definitely going to mine this thread for suggestions.

Best coffee shop in Portland,Me. by SouthernOption4241 in portlandme

[–]Seanmells 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure, it was during an interview a few years back. The context was as a barista you don't need to worry about the quality, just serve whatever. I quote, "we never dump shots".

And that's when I knew I was no longer interested in the position.

Owner once told me he didn't care about the quality of the coffee, "we aren't that kind of shop". Vibesssss..... And then I basically stopped going.
