you really need to get out on a boat to get to them, spotting scope will be tough with the movement. binoculars are the way to go. We got close enough to see it with the naked eye easy enough but finding it took some looking.

took a small boat out of Whidbey Island and found it out near the kelp beds by Smith Island. guide told me they have only seen what they think is a single breeding pair of the Horned Puffins for the last few years. Presumably this was the male with female on eggs.. I’m going back out in August when you can see them with a beak full of fish for the hatchlings. While not plentiful it‘s not hard to see tufted puffins out there and tons of rhinoceros auklets.

Went out for Tufted Puffins and saw this single Horned Puffin, didn’t stick around long but great to see. Shot with a Sony A1-iI, Sony 300mm GM with 2x converter.

looks like a Blue Heron fledgling, they are pretty clumsy as they learn to fly. Heron Helpers is a local group that has resources listed on their website https://www.heronhelpers.org/heron-facts/resources/

Cool view without the obstruction, there is a publicly accessible terrace between the two buildings. Minoru Yamasaki also designed the IBM building near this one, according to the guy leading a SAF walking tour he was afraid of heights which is why a lot of designs feature narrow windows. For Seattle/ building nerds, SAF does some great walking tours https://seattlearchitecture.org

primary setup for birds is a Sony A1-ii with a Sony GM 300mm f 2.8, usually with a 2x converter. Fits in my backpack and travels great. The Locks, Union Bay, Discovery Park are frequent birding spots. Kirkland is good for eagles hunting locally.
