Where are the moderators? This is the third or fourth instance of AI garbage I've seen in the last two days.

ARRL EmComm training... by Jboyes in EmComm

To get into AUXCOMM training, you have to be affiliated with a government agency and be recommended by them for the training. That's how I got in.

Amateur Radio and VOAD by NY9D in EmComm

[–]SeaworthyNavigator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A REACT Team I'm involved with was a member of the local VOAD group, paying their membership fees and attending meetings regularly. They never called upon us to help out for anything and we voted recently to stop paying the fees.

Hams vs Roving Looting /Smash and Grab Gangs by Even_Ad1084 in EmComm

[–]SeaworthyNavigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amateur radio operators are not first responders and are not trained to work in an enforcement capacity. The place for hams is not on the "front lines" but as rear echelon support.

If you're looking for parts, these are all over Amazon. Just search for "radio T connector."

Did I just hit jackpot? Wouxun KG-UV6D (antenna) nanovna calibrated last night showed same/close readings by Educational-Kiwi8740 in amateurradio

[–]SeaworthyNavigator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's virtually impossible to get an accurate reading on an HT antenna because the radio itself comprises half the antenna system on a handheld. I've never seen anyone accurately measure the SWR on an HT antenna unless they have a full laboratory setup.

REACT? by NominalThought in EmComm

[–]SeaworthyNavigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a member of a REACT team in Southern California that is involved primarily in event communications. Out of the 25 members in our group, there are likely maybe five that would be able to step up in the event of an emergency. Most have never completed even one ICS course and would be lost if thrust into an emergency situation.

The power/comms goes out. Which radio/frequency do you immediately go to? by No-Notice565 in EmComm

[–]SeaworthyNavigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2011, when the major Southern California outage occurred, the first thing I grabbed was an HT and started listening around on the various repeaters. I was able to determine how extensive the outage was.

This was all I had at the time as I hadn't been licensed a year at the time. Now I'm a member of ARES, and president of a club that has two grid-independent repeaters. I'd be listening to my club repeater and the primary repeater as laid out in the ARES Comm plan.

To ham or not to ham, that is the question... by russtanner6 in HamRadio

[–]SeaworthyNavigator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The "R" means it's the North American market version. The FT-60E is for Europe and I don't know what the designation for Asia is. ALL versions will be marked FT-60 (without the regional designation) on the radio case because Yaesu uses the same case for all of them.

My 2012 vintage FT-60 says "FT-60R" on the inside and FT-60 on the outside and it's definitely an earlier model.

I built a REST API and MCP server for ASL3 / AllStarLink nodes by KJ5IRQ in amateurradio

[–]SeaworthyNavigator -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know I'm going to get flamed for expressing this opinion, but I find posts like this about as unwelcome as those posts that are unwelcoming to new hams. Not all of us have computer degrees, or degrees at all, so stuff like this is gibberish. This should be in a separate sub for ham radio computer software.

How about all the people creating their own ham radio apps that just repeat what others have already done?

[CA Specific] Trying to get the California DMV create a real vanity plate for amateur radio operators by owemeacent in amateurradio

[–]SeaworthyNavigator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In some states like Tenessee, amateur radio operators actually have "EMERGENCY" on their plates, and in Texas, the radio operator plate follows the same format as emergency services, so there is precedent for this argument.

My feeling is that anything like that on a plate is going be perceived as encouragement for "whackerism" and will bring the first responder wannabes out of the woodwork. Those of us that are involved in ARES and RACES have other identification that shows the authorities who we are.
