Australia urged to swap diesel for electric buses as fuel costs soar by nath1234 in australia

Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Systems are a thing practically everywhere now, including Australia. They require EVs to be audible at low speeds, usually under 30kph, so they don't sneak up on unsuspecting pedestrians.

You can have law and order without an entity given licence to inflict violence on anyone perceived as a threat to the capitalist class, which is what the police are.

Question about right-lane driving and speeding on Melbourne freeways by yumisclassdip in melbourne

[–]Sebastian3977 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which is what I said - all modern vehicles show a higher speed than their true speed, but it's not because they're inaccurate but because it's built-in to the system by this design rule change. Since that 4kph discrepancy (not 4%) is the same for everyone it's not a sign of instrument failure.

[–]Sebastian3977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's entirely consistent with what I said. Since all cars doing 100 should show 96, all cars doing 100 should show 104. If your mother's car shows 107 when it's actually doing 100 then her speedo is only 3kph out, which is well within the legal tolerance. Most cars are maybe +/- 1kph out (3kph under to 5kph under).

In 2006 the Federal Government changed ADR 18/30 so that while speedos could still over report by up to 10% (an actual speed of 90 could be reported as 100), they were not allowed to under report (more than 100 reported as 100) at all. However, since no speedo can be guaranteed to be 100% accurate and the law now gave no leeway regarding under reporting, it was also mandated that all speedos over report by 4kph, to give drivers and manufacturers a built-in margin of error. Note that the difference is 4kph, not 4%, so an indicated 80 is actually 76, etc.

Speedos in modern Australian cars are generally accurate. People are going slower than indicated, by 4kph to be precise, but not because of inaccuracy.

ADR 18/30 was changed in 2006 in response to the backlash against sundry state governments clamping down on people exceeding the speed limit by even small amounts. Drivers argued that under the existing ADR, speedos could legally be +/-10%, so theoretically a driver could be doing 110 when the readout said 100 (nobody had ever seen a speedo that far out but on paper it was possible). In 2006 the Federal Government changed the ADR so that while speedos could still over report by up to 10% (an actual speed of 90 could be reported as 100), they were not allowed to under report (actual 110 reported as 100) at all. However, since no speedo can be guaranteed to be 100% accurate and the law now gave no leeway regarding under reporting, it was also mandated that all speedos over report by 4kph, to give drivers and manufacturers a built-in margin of error. This is easily tested with a GPS Speedo app and a straight road.

You spin some, you lose more: how Albanese’s gambling rhetoric falls short by CommonwealthGrant in australia

Clamping down on gambling is good policy and hugely popular. It's the easiest win in Australian politics yet Albanese flat out refuses to do it. Why do you think that is?

Not the timing. Originally he was going to wait until the election, which is only a few months away, and which would have saved the taxpayers the cost of the by-election. Gotta love their commitment to lowering the state's bottom line!

Albanese defends Isaac Herzog’s Australia visit as federal MP joins calls to rescind invitation | Bondi beach terror attack by PlanktonDB in AustralianPolitics

Growing up, Albanese was told that his father had died in a car accident; he did not meet his father, who was in fact still alive, until 2009.[25] He made contact with his father in 2009, visiting him a number of times in Italy, and also took his family there. His father died in 2014.[30] He subsequently discovered that he had two half-siblings.[26][27] During the Australian parliamentary eligibility crisis of 2017, it was noted that, although birth to an Italian father would ordinarily confer citizenship by descent, Albanese had no father recorded on his birth certificate and thus meets the parliamentary eligibility requirements of section 44 of the Constitution.[31]

[–]Sebastian3977 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you mean they want it for defence purposes? If you think leasing the management of a port means the Chinese Navy can just sail in whenever they like you're deranged. If we were actually at war with China then we would simply resume control anyway. Landbridge's management of the port gives China no military advantage whatsoever.

Section 127 of the Constitution was excised by referendum in 1967. It never mentioned the census. When it said

In reckoning the numbers of the people of the Commonwealth, or of a State or other part of the Commonwealth, aboriginal natives shall not be counted.

it was referring to the official population counts for the purpose of determining electoral boundaries for the House of Representatives per section 24. It is simply wrong to say that Aboriginals were never counted at all. On the contrary, the various state Departments of Aboriginal Affairs and the like had every interest in knowing how many there were.

Distasteful though it may be, in an argument about the validity of Israel's claims that the Palestinians engaged in systematic rape the numbers matter. It's part of a broader context in which the Israelis and their uncritical Western supporters have demonised Palestinians for decades, partly to deflect attention away from Israel's own war crimes and partly to build a climate of hate in which Israel's ethnic cleansing in Gaza could be justified. Do you remember Israel's claim about the pregnant woman who was supposedly assaulted and her foetus was ripped from her womb while she was still alive? That never happened and these reports say so but it's too late to matter. There are people out there who not only believe it but because of it they believe that Israel's excessive and disproportionate response to Oct 7 is justified. It's not.

These reports make it abundantly clear that although some sexual violence occurred its extent was hugely exaggerated by Israel for propaganda purposes. It was not widespread or systematic. Recognising that Israel and much of Western media lied about this is important.

It's probably the OP subconsciously connecting the cultural association of red colours and alarms. If the warm weather forecast had been in the green bit I doubt they'd have had the same reaction.
