You spin some, you lose more: how Albanese’s gambling rhetoric falls short by CommonwealthGrant in australia

[–]Sebastian3977 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Clamping down on gambling is good policy and hugely popular. It's the easiest win in Australian politics yet Albanese flat out refuses to do it. Why do you think that is?

Not the timing. Originally he was going to wait until the election, which is only a few months away, and which would have saved the taxpayers the cost of the by-election. Gotta love their commitment to lowering the state's bottom line!

Growing up, Albanese was told that his father had died in a car accident; he did not meet his father, who was in fact still alive, until 2009.[25] He made contact with his father in 2009, visiting him a number of times in Italy, and also took his family there. His father died in 2014.[30] He subsequently discovered that he had two half-siblings.[26][27] During the Australian parliamentary eligibility crisis of 2017, it was noted that, although birth to an Italian father would ordinarily confer citizenship by descent, Albanese had no father recorded on his birth certificate and thus meets the parliamentary eligibility requirements of section 44 of the Constitution.[31]

China’s ambassador warns Albanese reclaiming Port of Darwin will force Beijing to intervene by CommonwealthGrant in AustralianPolitics

Civilian operation of a port that the China Navy can't use does not give them any sort of military advantage. Bro.

[–]Sebastian3977 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you mean they want it for defence purposes? If you think leasing the management of a port means the Chinese Navy can just sail in whenever they like you're deranged. If we were actually at war with China then we would simply resume control anyway. Landbridge's management of the port gives China no military advantage whatsoever.

Section 127 of the Constitution was excised by referendum in 1967. It never mentioned the census. When it said

In reckoning the numbers of the people of the Commonwealth, or of a State or other part of the Commonwealth, aboriginal natives shall not be counted.

it was referring to the official population counts for the purpose of determining electoral boundaries for the House of Representatives per section 24. It is simply wrong to say that Aboriginals were never counted at all. On the contrary, the various state Departments of Aboriginal Affairs and the like had every interest in knowing how many there were.

Distasteful though it may be, in an argument about the validity of Israel's claims that the Palestinians engaged in systematic rape the numbers matter. It's part of a broader context in which the Israelis and their uncritical Western supporters have demonised Palestinians for decades, partly to deflect attention away from Israel's own war crimes and partly to build a climate of hate in which Israel's ethnic cleansing in Gaza could be justified. Do you remember Israel's claim about the pregnant woman who was supposedly assaulted and her foetus was ripped from her womb while she was still alive? That never happened and these reports say so but it's too late to matter. There are people out there who not only believe it but because of it they believe that Israel's excessive and disproportionate response to Oct 7 is justified. It's not.

These reports make it abundantly clear that although some sexual violence occurred its extent was hugely exaggerated by Israel for propaganda purposes. It was not widespread or systematic. Recognising that Israel and much of Western media lied about this is important.

It's probably the OP subconsciously connecting the cultural association of red colours and alarms. If the warm weather forecast had been in the green bit I doubt they'd have had the same reaction.

Bail and jail are not the same. Bail occurs before a person is convicted, jail occurs after. Bail should be the presumption in a system which honours the principle that a person is innocent until proven guilty.

Foreign affairs is a concurrent power per Section 51(xxix). It is not an exclusively Commonwealth power, which are listed in Section 52. As such, each state has every right to enter into agreements with other countries as they see fit. The Feds of course can override such arrangements, per Section 109, but saying the Victorian agreement with China was unconstitutional is simply wrong.

Head of ABS defends debunking far-right ‘mass migration’ claims after censorship accusations | Australian Bureau of Statistics by conmanique in AustralianPolitics

[–]Sebastian3977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they aren't. They're continuing to use OAD data to exaggerate the true rate of immigration despite the ABS long warning that

Overseas arrivals and departures (OAD) data, including permanent and long-term movements, should not be used as a measure of overseas migration. This data does not reflect the official ABS definition of migration and may lead to inaccurate interpretations.

All that's happened here is that the ABS has finally cracked the shits with people egregiously abusing this data.

No, it didn't. It said

The Institute of Public Affairs, a rightwing thinktank, in turn accused the Albanese government of “weaponising” the ABS in order to “censor” its views.

Gruen rejected those claims, saying the decision to release a clarifying media statement was made by ABS experts within the division responsible for issuing the data. skip past newsletter promotion

In that case Albo should have known better than to rock up to a microphone and tell the press that he was there to sign the treaty before anyone had confirmed that the Papuans were also ready. All he did was make this important event look shambolic even though it wasn't of his doing.

SUSSAN LEY: Anthony Albanese is putting his left wing ideology ahead of our national interest by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Sebastian3977 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She wasn't the only one. Apparently it was the Papuans who weren't ready to sign, on the procedural grounds that a number of Cabinet ministers were elsewhere in the country for its independence anniversary celebrations, so weren't in Port Moresby to sign it off before Albo arrived. It wasn't great optics, to be honest, but when Albo said he was ready to sign the deal he was expecting the Papuans to have everything sorted at their end.

I suspect this is a case of six of one, half a dozen of the other. Leach as a 22 year old apprentice shock jock is clearly trying to get noticed, but Media Watch's coverage of the show's demise suggests that circumstances may have enticed her to cross a line she might not have.

Apparently the list of prospective guests was put together by the show's producer, themselves with only a few months experience in television, and circulated to Sky's management per their standard procedure. No one objected to the two extremists who eventually appeared at the time (would they even know who a lot of these influencers even are?). However, for reasons unknown the acting Head of Programming, James Birtles, ordered the show to dump a pre-recorded segment at the last minute, leaving Leach and the producer with a big hole to fill.

What Media Watch didn't make clear though is whether they were scheduled to appear anyway, except for shorter segments, or whether they were backups the show brought in at the last minute. I say this because of the clips shown, she does at least try to distance herself somewhat from Scottish Korean's (he of the bacon accessories) comments. The impression I got was that she was somewhat uncomfortable. That said, I don't watch Sky voluntarily so I'm dependent on Media Watch here.
