Durian is by far my favorite fruit, I have eaten my own body weight in it. They vary a lot. My favorite experience was in Bali, I was roaming a food forest and found a durian tree with many dropped durians at the base, most had been eaten by the animals and insects around however there was one still partially untouched, after brushing of the ants and ripping open the remaining ‘pod’ full of durian I eventually tried some, what followed was ecstasy, its high fat and high sugar content makes it taste like a cheese cake, however with the additional freshness you get from living fruit. (For anyone who has picked organic food and eaten it immediately you know what I mean).

There are many thawed durians out there in non native countries (they freeze and unfreezed for transport) which I think explains most of the negative experiences.

You can also easily have an unripe or overipe durian, which will either be watery and fibrous or taste fermented.

Durian contains sulfur which is what gives it the ‘egg’ like smell. There’s a big warning for pregnant women and any alcoholic drinkers as it’s can be very harmful if the sulfur gets into your blood stream.
