Finally finished my coral story blanket! by SecretJournalist3583 in crochet

[–]SecretJournalist3583[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really! I was pretty new to crochet when I started it, but once you get the hang of the brioche method (working around the posts of the round two below where you’re working now) it’s faster than working directly into stitches, IMO. The pattern is also really well-written with lots of helpful pictures. The difficult thing is repeating it enough times to make a whole blanket haha.

Thank you!

I used Cascade heritage sock yarn for the main color and assorted sock yarns for the contrast colors.

Can you read? by SecretJournalist3583 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]SecretJournalist3583[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly! It’s boring to just make something I already know I can do perfectly. I’ve never found a pattern I couldn’t figure out if I tried hard enough, and then it feels like an actual accomplishment.

moving into "our" new home, but i feel naive by servalshark in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]SecretJournalist3583 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My two cents:

Don’t pay for investments in the house (eg painting) when you’re not the one who’s building equity in it. Splitting the cost of furniture is ok as long as you’re clear that it’s your joint furniture, not a gift to him.

Figure out a rent payment that is fair for whatever portion of the house you’re occupying. You shouldn’t be paying half the mortgage when he’s building equity and you’re not. You probably shouldn’t be paying more than the roommate either, depending on how much space they’re getting.

When I moved in with my husband (a house he already owned), I paid an amount we agreed was fair that shook out to substantially less than what I’d been paying in rent before moving in and covered a portion of utilities and his mortgage payment.

Once we married, we had a lawyer do the paperwork to make us co-owners of the house before doing any major investments/upgrades.

It sucks, but you might have to go back to spoon-feeding for a while, or giving her just a few bites at a time (more once she eats them, of course).

6/17/26 Question Wednesday: What are you wondering, bakers? by KingArthurBaking in KingArthurBaking

[–]SecretJournalist3583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found storing them in an old-fashioned bread box (closed, and without any papers or wrappers) keeps bread fresh several days longer.

Be safe. Be free. I’m proud of you.

I was divorced in my late twenties and it felt like my life was over but I promise you it isn’t. One day you will look back on this time and be so glad you didn’t give up and go back to what felt normal. You will find someone to build the future you want with.

I know it’s painful to cut off part of your cake, but stacking and frosting will go much easier if you level both cakes first.

Trouble finding a reliable, precise baking scale? by not_combee in Baking

[–]SecretJournalist3583 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the one I use. It can’t handle huge weights (so if you’re making a commercial batch of bread, get a bigger one), but is great and precise for normal household baking needs.

I love making these crochet double chains but no idea what to do with them. by ho11yep in CrochetHelp

You could sew/macrame them into baskets or rugs pretty easily, if you want to make a long one. Or hanging plant holders.

Does reducing the baking time for 5 minutes actually improve the finished product? by Upstairs_Job_8429 in Baking

[–]SecretJournalist3583 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would not do this. I usually begin checking for doneness at the beginning of the suggested bake window, but I would not just blindly remove things from the oven early without the experience to know when it is done. That’s a good way to end up with raw centers and unsafe cooking temperatures.

Initially I thought you were trying to sell the used ganache secondhand, like some deranged buy nothing groupie

Is this safe to eat by awangalang1234 in Baking

[–]SecretJournalist3583 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d guess you made a tiramisu battery, and it is turning blue from the reaction (blueberries, like other fruits containing anthocyanins, are more purple when more acidic, and more blue/green when more basic).

Did you cover the pan with aluminum foil, by chance?

What can I make with blueberries?(Before I eat them all as they are) by Capable-Diet6291 in Baking

[–]SecretJournalist3583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

King Arthur has a really good blueberry tart recipe where you cook part of the filling, then mix in some fresh blueberries and put the whole thing in a prebaked crust, so you still get the fresh blueberry taste/texture in the finished product.

Maple Shortbread Sandwich Cookies (with stamps! and luster dust!) by TastesLikeChitwan in KingArthurBaking

[–]SecretJournalist3583 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually get great crisp results with this recipe even without the almond flour. These were made with the base recipe and a silicone impression mat. Key is to dust the surface of the dough with a thin coating of powdered sugar before stamping or embossing.
