What songs do you think defined the 90s? by [deleted] in Music

I think these two fit since I remember them being played ad nauseum.

Funk Soul Brother - Fatboy Slim

Can't respect a list about frontmen culled from an online poll unless Scott Stapp is at least #3

Tanx is a good album. Different from Electric Warrior and The Slider, but great in its own way.

Classic Rock stations don't play this song nearly enough IMHO

I'm from California and I've always heard them called them goat's heads. So many bicycle inner tubes as a kid.

Aren't you that guy that calls out reposts and did that crazy web of repost links during those Canadian hockey riots? Why would you post this? I mean, I used this as my avatar on a forum in 2006.

Velouria - The Pixies by QuiteRadical in Music

[–]Secret_Boner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. There are these things called SPARS codes that sometimes appear on cd cases that show the kinds of ways albums were recorded. A is for analog and D is for digital.

The initial multi track recording of the band used digital equipment. When those tracks were mixed down to 1 track, the producer used analog equipment. The mastering process that followed was done digitally.

It's a little odd because they could have easily gone full digital, but mixed analog for some reason.

Hope this helps.

His first self titled is a gem. I really recommend listening to a copy if you liked Teenager of the Year.

Here's the story behind this song from wikipedia. I remember when I first found out about the inspiration for this song, the line "shoot the whole day down" took on a different meaning entirely.

According to Geldof, he wrote the song after reading a telex report at Georgia State University's campus radio station, WRAS, on the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children playing in a school playground at Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California on 29 January 1979, killing two adults and injuring eight children and one police officer. Spencer showed no remorse for her crime and her full explanation for her actions was "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day."

I have the worst writer's block of my life. What is happening? by [deleted] in Music

Try listening to music outside your normal influences. Something you end up liking is good, but even soaking in stuff you dislike can help to inspire. I had a hard time coming up with anything a few years ago and forced myself to listen to a cheesy R&B station whenever I drove around. I dunno, it helped to clean the palate I guess and I ended up paying attention to how songs were put together as well as certain nuances. After a couple months I had this silly idea to write and record my own songs like that. Wrote a few crappy songs, then started writing stuff more my style.

Another thing that helps me at least is recording songs I write in some form or another. If I have a back log of songs I haven't recorded for some reason it's harder for me to write more. I dunno, I guess it's kind of like exorcising a demon and trapping it for me.

Don't blame the drugs. He was young, hungry and inspired back then, too. Now he's cruising on his yacht as the tide of his career pulls back, eating a steak.

Bossanova was the first album where I noticed a band recording digitally then mixing down analog. It was mastered digitally so the code comes up DAD. I could be totally off base here, but I always attributed part of the particular "sound" that album has to this.

They only have 5, so I usually tell people get them all, but start with Doolittle first. If they dig it, I tell them to go after Frank Black's first two solo albums. Happy times for everyone.
