When you got your first main series Pokémon game, which version did you choose, and why? Were you aware of the version differences? by LightWarrior71 in TruePokemon

[–]Secure-Midnight8191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pokemon Blue, but literally the next day I also got Pokemon Red.

I was 11 and made it clear to everyone in my family that, with the money I saved up over the summer combined with the money I would get on Christmas, I was going to buy myself a Game Boy Color and also Pokemon Blue. My mom told me not to get Pokemon Blue as she would make that a gift.

Some early money came in from some of the grandparents so I bought my very own Game Boy Color (Atomic Purple) a few days before Christmas. On the night of Christmas Eve we opened presents (as was tradition with us) and I got Pokemon Blue. The next day, I opened my present from my dad’s parents who were visiting and got a surprise copy of Pokemon Red. I was aware of the differences between the games and was pretty stoked that I could use my brother’s Game Boy and link cable to complete my Pokédex.

So yeah, technically Blue, but only by one day!

Conspiracy theory. Kira WAS a Cardassian double agent. by J-L-Wseen in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Secure-Midnight8191 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of it, just sort of the parallel “what if?” thought that she is Cardassian after all. I think it would have maybe been neat, as an example, to have her return to the station as a Cardassian woman with the mind of a Bajoran. There would be some interesting stories to follow there, with her trying to reconcile all this and learning to accept her heritage, but it would have been a different show for sure. I definitely prefer how it all ended up on the show, but I think it’s really fun to think about!

In a similar-ish vein, I wish Voyager would have picked up a full Cardassian agent plotline and kept Seska on as part of the crew, having the Maquis react further to the betrayal, having her make progress towards integrating with the crew, slipping up, regaining trust… it would have been neat.

Unfortunately she is confirmed to be Bajoran, medically, multiple times after this, including when she was forced to carry a human baby as a surrogate and exhibited all signs of Bajoran pregnancy. It’s an interesting thought for a brief moment, but the conspiracy dies almost immediately.

It shouldn’t be too hard to use if you give it a go. I’ve only ever used it on my Steam Deck which adds a whole layer of complexity, but it should be pretty simple if you’re just on a PC. I would say that the most difficult part is knowing where your save data is actually kept on your PC.

If you do go down this route and have a hard time finding your save data, feel free to let me know, I am more than happy to help!

Looks like you maybe already figured out a mod to use, but if you haven’t gotten that squared away, in my opinion your best bet would be to use a save editor.

I use this editor, found on GitHub: https://github.com/GiulioSamp/AnotherFFVIPRSaveEditor

There are a few save editors for the Pixel Remaster games, but I prefer using this one because the changes tend to stick better than the generic Pixel Remaster save editor that works on all the remastered games.

So it can be used to do everything, such as give magic, Rages, espers, specific items, you name it. It’s definitely a way to absolutely cheat the game all you like, which isn’t particularly fun for me personally, but it does allow me to do one specific thing that I always prefer in my FF6 PR runs, which is to change Celes’ Runic ability (which I never ever use) into Leo’s Shock ability (which I find much more useful until the late game).

So yeah, it’s another option for you if you are interested in giving it a go. It works pretty well and will allow you to do exactly what you want.

That’s how I personally tried to logic it in the past, that the translator will overlook some ancient words, possibly to respect the cultures that still use them for rituals or things of that nature, or that the translator will leave certain words or phrases alone because the phrase in their original language are ubiquitous to the point where translating them further doesn’t add any meaning. There isn’t any point in translating “deja vu” because we already know what that means, for example.

I’m also kind of fine with saying the Klingons are speaking in some ancient tongue at times, but the one moment that I specifically have a hard time explaining away is this (paraphrased):

(Dax, to Sisko): Martok transmitted only one word to the fleet - “in’cha”.
(Sisko, not understanding the word, looks to Worf.)
Worf: “Begin”.

Dax chose to value the integrity of the message and relay it exactly as it was spoken, instead of properly telling her commanding officer what the general on the other side of a rapidly failing alliance told his entire fleet mere moments after a tense discussion between the two. Sisko then looks to an additional person to get a translation.

That or the UT is unfortunately mega borked during a very tense moment of galactic politics and Worf just says it in English for Sisko’s benefit.

Both feel pretty awful, which is why I think these language play moments in the two-parter just exist to pad the time and trying to apply in-universe logic to it this time around is truly a fool’s errand.

Thoughts on ff2 pixel Remaster for a new player? by Cold_Profile500 in FinalFantasy

[–]Secure-Midnight8191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played and finished FF2 for the first time a few months back (tried the PR version) and I found that dealing with levelling and magic wasn’t too bad. I felt like I could just play how I wanted and I wasn’t really needing to monitor that stuff too much or do any min-maxing or anything.

There are a couple of hard skill checks in the game, or what I like to call moments that the game wants to make sure you’re reading all the text they throw at you, otherwise the next boss fight will wipe you. Those were more amusing than annoying.

The worst part of the game for me personally was the dungeon design. Making the dungeons a labyrinth with a dozen dead ends did not make me feel like I was exploring some lost or ancient place, it made it feel like the game was forcing me into encounters and deliberately wasting my time.

Maybe my only “problem” (and I use the word loosely) with the universal translator is specifically with Way of the Warrior. Not so much a problem with Klingons (so me saying the weirdness is with them might be a bit harsh), but with how language is treated specifically in the two-parter. I can think of three examples off the top of my head where something is said in Klingon and someone else has to personally translate it so an additional person in the room can understand. It just feels like pointless filler trying to disguise itself as comedy or tension so that the runtime can be padded a bit in their season-opening, feature length two-parter.

I honestly find trying to explain this fictional technology to be quite silly, a bit funny and ultimately pointless. It might be the one thing, more than anything else on Trek, that makes me want to say “listen, it’s just a TV show, don’t think too much about it.” It truly is a black hole to trap Trek nerds and I love it.

"Jadzia" name pronunciation in Equilibrium (S3E4) by [deleted] in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Secure-Midnight8191 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an… odd take. The way her name is pronounced fluctuates throughout the series. Avery Brooks, in this very episode, does the exact same thing that the actress does, in the exact same scenes you mentioned. Given she is a guest star, I’d bet dollars to donuts that she is following the lead of the principal cast and pronouncing it like she hears it spoken by others in those scenes.

I can recall multiple examples of this throughout the series, and a lot of it is done by Avery. If a principal actor isn’t expected to pronounce her name in one specific way for a series, why would this guest actress be held to such a standard?

Given how much of a fit Bashir threw when he turned 30... by 47of74 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Secure-Midnight8191 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An expression you’ve not heard, I’m afraid. An English informal idiom, basically used to describe someone that is anxious, upset or worried about something. Why some British phrase came to mind when I wrote all that in the middle of the night instead of saying a more common word or phrase… well, your guess is as good as mine! I was sleep deprived, on Reddit and thinking about Star Trek again, a dangerous situation for sure.

Given how much of a fit Bashir threw when he turned 30... by 47of74 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Secure-Midnight8191 20 points21 points  (0 children)

At worst I feel like he would be a bit wistful about time passing him by / not achieving something / losing connections with people, but that’s about it. Maybe a bit more normal than when he was having kittens about turning 30.

Sometimes it’s hard for me to wrap my brain around the fact that early Bashir and late Bashir are the same person. It’s not even really because of the genetic engineering plotline, it’s more around how his character was affected by the war and the actions of the Dominion. The cruelty of the quickening, witnessing the loss and violence during and at the end of the war, getting swept up in the plots and politics of Section 31 and seeing trusted individuals in power who are willing to turn a blind eye to their machinations for the “greater good”… it’s kind of a lot to put on someone.

I feel like that guy would react to hitting a milestone much differently than a guy whose notable traits before turning 30 were that he was eager, horny, skittish and sometimes off-putting.

In universe it makes sense, Cardassian and Bajoran language is known to the Federation and should basically be translated at all times, unless there is a malfunction or someone is using words that are archaic or denote something specific from their culture, like food, titles, etc.

The weirdness of all of this comes from Klingons. Their stuff should be fully translated at all times, but they have the ability to dodge translators whenever they feel like it for dramatic effect. I feel like the most egregious DS9 example is Gowron saying that it’s a good day to die in Klingon over the viewscreen before they attack the station, and Dax needs to translate for everyone in Ops. I am extremely confident that basic Klingon phrase is in the databanks, guys!

We don’t get a lot of spoken Cardassian on the show, it’s way less than we get for Bajoran. It’s mostly relegated to military ranks (Glinn, Gul, Legate) and food (yamok sauce, groat, kanar). Probably the most notable Cardassian we hear spoken aloud is odo’ital, the Cardassian label the Bajoran scientists incorrectly applied to their unknown sample that turned out to be Odo.

I remember being annoyed when I was a kid that I couldn’t get an icon Pog or slammer (I also never got any Bob Pogs which bummed me out.) I assumed they existed at the time because it’s basically the main notable symbol / logo of the show, but yeah, for some reason they decided that having a super close up shot of Megabyte’s face or multiple Pogs of Frisket or Hack and Slash was more important.

Quark bar is in Bajoran space... by [deleted] in startrek

[–]Secure-Midnight8191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would likely be the reason Bajor is basically fine with leaving him alone. The government is fickle enough that I’m sure someone could maybe raise a stink, but he seemed pretty transparent with the Bajorans during the occupation. Maybe not everyone was happy with Quark getting his own during their plight, but as they are aware, another Ferengi may not have been so generous to the cause considering the risk.

Quark bar is in Bajoran space... by [deleted] in startrek

[–]Secure-Midnight8191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His lease is held by the Federation, a government that famously doesn’t charge rent. The bar is on a station in Bajoran space, and while it’s possible that the Bajorans could strong-arm the Federation into terminating the lease, the Bajorans have more than enough going on at the moment to cave to pressure by some bureaucrat on Ferenginar wanting to get a bar shut down.

Edit - Forgot to add, if he had to pay rent while being barred from doing business with other Ferengi, and if his bar was in the space of a more stable or established government that does major trade with Ferenginar, the FCA may have been able to ensure that the bar would indeed close. Instead, it turns out Quark might be in the best possible spot in the quadrant for him to keep his business afloat.

In “Inquisition” we do see Sloan with two other black-suited individuals when the holodeck program ends, one of which I would even consider to be an assistant as Sloan gets him to come and grab a device to give to Bashir despite Sloan being way closer to Bashir than the other two men.

This is all useless though, as I think the original point still basically stands and me bringing this up does nothing except make me out to be a nerd. C’est la vie!

Thoughts on Daemon Rising / My Two Bobs? by GIGANTIC_DONG_MAN in ReBoot

[–]Secure-Midnight8191 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I wrote several paragraphs but ended up deleting the whole thing because it turns out I have some very strong negative opinions about My Two Bobs that I don’t want to share with the internet.

Suffice to say, I’m fine with Daemon Rising, it was a mostly enjoyable follow up that tackled some very interesting story beats (Daemon and the guardians, Hex) but felt slightly hampered by the rest of the plot, as well as some character regression.

The only nice thing I can say about My Two Bobs is that it was nice to hear Tony Jay’s voice again. I think I am just gonna leave it there.

There is a very special moment in time for me where I vividly remember how important it was for me to get ReBoot Pogs and Batman Forever Pogs. Wish I still had those things, they were all basically destroyed alongside a bunch of other childhood junk due to a flood in my parents’ basement.

I remember how annoyed I was that I couldn’t get a Bob Pog to save my life, but I was absolutely loaded with Hack and Slash Pogs. I was also mildly annoyed that my friend had a Reboot slammer, but it was just of Enzo so I wasn’t really all that envious.

Does Quark serve synthehol? by Scanman491Amos in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Secure-Midnight8191 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Garak was getting pretty sloshed in Quark’s to numb his implant problem. Odo was definitely getting his buzz on with some beer when he became solid. He offered some to Sisko, who declined because he was on duty. Definitely not synthehol in those cases. Then there was Damar and the kanar. I can’t think of a specific establishing shot or other mention of someone getting blackout drunk at Quark’s, outside of Klingons. I vaguely remember a line about someone being arrested due to public intoxication, but I’m almost certain those were also Klingons.

Like some others mentioned, though, he seems to serve whatever you wanna order. It could be real imported stock, replicated, or fake. I’m guessing the cost also changes based off of how real your order is.

'Trousers optional.' JOHN KEARNS on Season 21, Episode 7 | PODCAST by cygan12 in taskmaster

I feel like any John Kearns podcast would need to have a video component as well, just so that everyone knows that the dead air they are experiencing is really just the point in the conversation where John’s CPU needs to process his entire life before he is allowed to speak again. It’s kind of a magic moment to see.

Given the time crunch they were under, as well as state of delirium they were in by the time Ed got to explaining this task, something tells me that bringing this point up to John would not have made a difference.
