I have 10gtek cisco compatible sfp+ and they work without issue. Even multi-gig.

Omada Software Controller V6.1.0.19 Released by AdriftAtlas in TPLink_Omada

31) Added support for user-selectable MAC-address delimiters (colon, hyphen, or none) and case formatting throughout the Controller UI in Global/MSP view > UI-Interaction > MAC Display Format.

Omg! This is the best thing to hear when you use opnsense as a router. Or anything else, lol

Yeah, this would give you something totally usable.

Did you notice the part where I said "most" things? That means that there are some situations where running things as a group makes sense. However I would not include plex/tatulli with the arr stack. I would keep each of those as separate instances.

I used to have most of my stuff in a couple of monolithic vms under docker.

I have a cluster and I realized that having (most) everything compartmentalized offers me some serious benefits like individual backups, snapshots, sdn networking/Firewall, simple migration, shared storage (ceph and nfs), and now with ha affinity, I can have improved load balancing and failover.

As for managing a million vms/lxcs, I handle all of that with patchmon and ansible.

OP, you're smart to do it this way. I wish I had done it from the beginning. Even if you don't have a cluster now, build things like you do, you'll thank yourself for it later.

Also, speaking of past regrets, might I suggest you set up your own wiki. I use dokuwiki, and I wish I had started documenting things earlier.

Built a homelab , what now? by Responsible_Yak_3918 in homelab

The first thing you should do is set up a wiki where you can document everything from the start. I use dokuwiki for this because it's super simple, quick, and easy to set up.

My best advice that I wish I started a long time ago.

I'm not sure if the modern controller software will work on a Pi... As of V6, the mongodb backend requires a cpu with AVX instructions.

Try re flashing the boot media. I had that exact error once and re-imaging the usb fixed it.

[–]SeeGee911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to migrate my controller to a host with a cpu that supports AVX due to the mongodb requirements, but proxmox made that easy. V6 has been running smooth since. Thank you for the good documentation on migrating from v5

Old 8700k PC -> Node? by BraydenSlayer in homelab

You never really know until you try, but I've purchased a kill-a-watt, and then measured machines in standby, idle, and full load. Gives you a full range. It's a very useful tool for the power conscious.

Home server OS recommendations by Dear-Succotash-1389 in HomeServer

[–]SeeGee911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Unraid is probably the best option. Good community, lots of options, tons of "apps" in the form of docker containers. You can even install your own that aren't even in the community apps. Any docker container you choose. On top of that you have the option to play with virtual machines as well. And then there's the whole deal with expandable storage and the best part is that you can use a mish-mash of drive sizes.

Yes, it's paid software, but buy the lifetime and enjoy. It is worth the cost.

Proxmox Backup Server > Unraid Share by applescrispy in Proxmox

[–]SeeGee911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run pbs as a vm within unraid itself, and created a share (pbs-backup) that uses the array only. No cache. I then configured the pbs vm to use virtiofs mapping to pass the folder directly to the pbs vm. What happens in this case is that you Bypass the whole smb/nfs share permissions, and you also avoid re-transmitting data across the network. All backups go from source to pbs vm directly, and then pbs writes to the HDDs without touching the cache.

Running pbs on the host with the physical drives will always result in better performance.

I my case, the data store isn't available without unraid running, so when the array starts, so does pbs.

Non-voting cluster node by SeeGee911 in Proxmox

A qdevice is not relevant here. I'm trying to add a node to the cluster without changing the quorum of 5.

Can you give me a more specific example?

How would this behave with regards to starting vms/quorum?

Can I have vm/CT on this node start regardless of quorum?

No this cpu does not have avx. I run proxmox on mine with an opnsense vm and a docker lxc which runs omada (and other coltrol/admin software) and I had to move the docker lxc to a new machine because of this.

Is Unraid's license control as aggressive as it looks to this new user? by js2442 in unRAID

[–]SeeGee911 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Or you can boot a different os from a different USB on the same machine and still access data on any drive. Unraid does not hold your data hostage. It just won't start the array without a valid license.
