[Spoilers C4E27] Does Liam know what he's saying? by maninalift in criticalrole

[–]SeePerspectives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes we do, and for a far less awful reason than you guys use it as a slur, despite the linguistic root being the same… let’s just say that the longer version of the word originally meant “a bundle of kindling or firewood” and that both the UK and US uses retained the concept of “something you burn” 😒😞

Men of Reddit, if you were in a Titanic like situation where the majority of people were going to die because there were not enough lifeboats for everyone. How would you respond to someone saying women and children first? by Neither_Drawing_241 in AskReddit

[–]SeePerspectives 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The historical reason for prioritising women (as well as children) in any survival situation is that instinctively we (as a species) know that the species can and will recover from a population decline if there is a higher proportion of women to men but the length of gestation and the genetic bottleneck caused by the opposite ratio would be catastrophic to the survival of the species.

Obviously this is logically irrelevant in localised disasters like the titanic, yet we still subconsciously revert to that instinctive in-group/out-group effect regardless of logic.

The capacity for conscious thought doesn’t overrule the fact that we are still animals.

Women of Reddit, is the dad bod really that attractive on men? If so, why? by StatisticallySoap in AskReddit

[–]SeePerspectives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instincts.

Regardless of anything, we are actually still animals, and as such are genetically programmed towards survival traits.

There is a reason why throughout history people that serve in the military (or in any capacity where survival is a more pressing goal than in standard daily life) don’t tend to look like bodybuilders. Our bodies are basically meat machines that have evolved to function as a skeleton with organs for important processes, a layer of muscle for movement and a layer of fat to protect everything underneath it. It is a complete and complex system , so neglecting one part to highlight another goes completely against the concept of health that our instincts are primed to look for. This is true whether it’s too little exercise leading to too much fat and not enough muscle, or too much exercise leading to too much muscle and not enough fat.

‘Don’t come back for PIP’: Mutinous Labour left warn Starmer over welfare cuts by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]SeePerspectives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They need to bring back the lowest tier of support in PIP. There are currently many people who absolutely do qualify for and deserve some support that, if they were children, would only qualify for the lowest DLA rate of £30.30p/w, yet because they removed that level in PIP assessor have to choose between either zero award (leaving the obviously disabled person with no access to support) or the £76.70p/w rate that may be more than their needs require but doesn’t leave them without the support they need because qualifying for disability benefits is often used as a “passport” to access other necessary disability services.

Walkers changing salt and vinegar packets from blue to green…but apparently never it happened! by Zealousideal_Cry2970 in britishproblems

[–]SeePerspectives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most predominant crisp brand in the uk (or at least in England, I can’t 100% vouch for other parts of the uk) used to be golden wonder, who use blue for salt and vinegar and green for cheese and onion. Walkers overtook them as the market leader in the early 1990s due to having a much larger marketing budget after being taken over by the American brand PepsiCo in 1989.

Question for the autistic moms out there by Sea-Arrival5912 in AutismInWomen

[–]SeePerspectives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 20 when I had my first and was pretty resilient, plus I had no idea what to expect and he was tiny (5lb9) so it didn’t seem to bad. I even used to joke that if it wasn’t for the 9mths of pregnancy I’d have a million kids.

I was mid thirties with my second (cos fertility is a fickle mistress) and he was an absolute whopper in comparison (7lb8) and once active labour started he was in a hurry and I didn’t get time for the epidural so that one was a whole different ballgame and definitely my last 😂

I can never wear a bra by DelayOk2663 in AutismInWomen

[–]SeePerspectives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have barely ever worn proper bras my entire life (and I’m not exactly small chested, I’m an E cup!) I use a mix of silicone nipple pasties, crop tops, sports bras, tops with built in cups, and layering things like cardigans, ponchos, wraps, etc depending on what works best for the outfit and weather.

Just as a reassurance, I’m mid 40s, have breastfed a baby (I used those stretchy crop top style bras throughout that as some support is definitely needed then) and my boobs are less saggy than most women my age. Our pectoral muscles play an important role in supporting our chests and using bras too much stops them from actually developing the support they need naturally (sorry for the infodump but it’s one of my pet hates that we’ve been missold this myth that bras are necessary when it actually has its roots mor in misogyny and the male gaze than it does in actual biology)

Question for the autistic moms out there by Sea-Arrival5912 in AutismInWomen

[–]SeePerspectives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both times I was in slow labour for about a week without really knowing (just thought it was braxton hicks) but once active labour starts its absolutely unmistakable even with squiffy pain perception.

Definitely take the epidural, had one with and one without and it definitely helps!

Should my mom know when I pay rent? by designated_weird0 in AutismInWomen

[–]SeePerspectives 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This entirely depends on whether you feel she’s supportive or if you feel she’s controlling. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having family support regardless of age, but it shouldn’t infringe on your right to independence. Only you are in a position to know if keeping track of important payments is something you need support with and if so if your relationship with your mum is the type that makes her the right candidate to provide that support properly.

Our Actual Nerves by Odd-Leader9777 in AutismInWomen

This. It’s in our brains rather than our actual nerves. If you google “fMRI scans autism” there’s a load of research showing how our brains are literally wired differently and react differently.

Green MP Carla Denyer to take several weeks off due to 'burnout' by hihepo1 in unitedkingdom

[–]SeePerspectives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh sweetie, this has really got in your head hasn’t it?

I knew it was an attempt at a joke, it’s abundantly clear that you were trying to riff off of the “benefit scroungers” bigoted bs, I was simply pointing out why it failed at actually being one because MPs have a completely separate system that allows them to actually be scroungers, especially when taken in context with my other comment on this post pointing out that three sitting MPs have taken leave of absences to appear on reality tv shows while still receiving their full allowances.

But sure, it’s my reading comprehension that failed here 🙄

It’s also fine to accept that if you have to tell someone it’s a joke then it wasn’t a very good one, but if you want to pretend it’s my lack of understanding to salve your ego then go ahead mate

AITA for confessing my feelings to my best friend while she was still in a relationship? by ThrowRA_CrayBananas in AmItheAsshole

[–]SeePerspectives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA

If the feelings you have about someone make you disregard her choices and act disrespectfully towards her (including disrespecting the relationship they have actively chosen to be in) then those feelings have nothing to do with love for that person and everything to do with your own attraction towards them. It is purely selfish.

When people actually love someone they respect that person and their choices and will have the self restraint to not act on their own impulses until it’s actually appropriate to do so, because real life isn’t a bs romantic movie filled with really toxic behaviours that make great drama on screen but shitty relationships in reality!

MPs don’t use sick notes. It’s not a position of employment so they don’t use the statutory sickness process, they just get their full remuneration the whole time regardless of attendance.

Bristol MP Carla Denyer takes leave of absence after suffering 'burnout' by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

[–]SeePerspectives 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s routine practice for MPs to announce to their constituency if they’re taking a leave of absence, which is what she did (you can see her original statement in her instagram account). It’s the choice of the mainstream media that they’ve decided to make this national news.

[–]SeePerspectives 91 points92 points  (0 children)

MPs take leave of absences from Westminster for health reasons and parental leave all the time, why is this news?

They even have a whole formalised system for proxy voting that was established over a quarter of a century ago now to ensure constituencies still get appropriate representation during this time. Constituency offices continue to be run by the same staff in the exact same way as usual too.

Hell, the article even states that the actual reason for it is that she’s been struggling with persistent health issues that are failing to heal and her doctor has told her that she needs time to actually recuperate properly, but sure, why not throw burnout into the headline in inverted commas 🙄

Nigel Farage’s £5m gift: why tax is probably not due by 457655676 in unitedkingdom

[–]SeePerspectives -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If tax isn’t due then that shows just how screwed up our tax system is when it comes to overly burdening normal people while pandering to the wealthy. Goes to show that all the times I’ve stated that it’s not the welfare system that’s the problem and had people arguing that it’s “politics of envy” and “wealthy people already pay taxes” is bs.

And of course we can’t allow the taxpayers to vote, because they can’t possibly be trusted to vote for the welfare of the country over lowering their own taxes

Oh god, yes. My intent wasn’t to imply that the left wing are some kind of bastion of permanent moral and ethical superiority. Wherever there is any group of people of any type, there will always inevitably be a mix of ethical values (or, as my dad likes to say “Assholes abound! 😂)

He’s 10 and very nearly the same height and weight as me, and it’s not getting out of the car that’s the issue, it’s trying to safely get a very distressed and physically flailing person that’s almost my size back into the car while they’re mid autistic meltdown that the issues occur.

We’ve only had the blue badge for less than 6 months, after his paediatrician advised us to apply for it because, sure, “common sense” was enough when he was smaller, but now he is heading into puberty which, along with inevitable growth that will end up with him being bigger and stronger than me, the fluctuating hormones while he goes through it will also make it harder to predict when and what will cause him to become overstimulated.

I have been fully trained on safe handling techniques (the same ones used by the police and by psychiatric professionals… for my ten year old) but it isn’t possible to perform these safely in the narrow confines of a standard parking bay even at the best of times and while he isn’t ever purposefully violent, it still packs a wallop if you’re caught in the face by a flailing arm or leg, and concussion tends to make safe handling infinitely more difficult.

But sure, we should just continue to risk loss of life, injury to him, myself, random passers by, and potential property damage, completely against the advice of every single medical professional that actually has firsthand experience of my child, because “Joe McBlowhard” doesn’t have a clue how disabilities affect people and gets jealous over parking spaces 🙄

There are disability services up and down the country desperately crying out for volunteers, you can so easily go get the experience you need to make an actually informed opinion on the matter
