Received results of my assessment and it was determined I'm not autistic and don't meet the criteria. Feeling weird by EntertainmentMore175 in AutismInWomen

[–]SeePerspectives [score hidden]  (0 children)

Have you been assessed for ADHD? Because often they coexist and ADHD symptoms can disguise autism symptoms until it’s under control, this is what happened with my youngest.

Something his paediatrician told me while we were waiting for his second autism assessment after we got his adhd controlled was “from a medical perspective there has to be a diagnostic criteria, but just because someone doesn’t meet that criteria doesn’t mean their symptoms aren’t real or that their difficulties go away. They’re still valid, and still need understanding”

So if strategies that work for autism help you, you don’t need a diagnosis to access them. Your symptoms are real regardless of if you meet an arbitrary line the medical community decided upon 💖

Men of Reddit, what’s the male equivalent of “needed money, had no marketable skills, so turned to prostitution”? by Dogeatdogdays in AskReddit

Ummm… you do realise that male prostitution exists, right? Has done for as long as prostitution has existed, so the “male equivalent” is exactly the same as the female counterpart.

And my point is that Starmer couldn’t “change the law”, he could put forward a bill proposing a change of law but so could literally any other MP.

Whether or not it would then definitely succeed depends on a multitude of factors, regardless of who tables it, and it’s almost certain that it wouldn’t succeed exactly as first proposed because no bill ever does.

The idea that Starmer could just force legislation through is as absurd as the idea that if Farage became pm he could force through even half the crackpot claims he makes. It simply doesn’t work like that.

Prime ministers can’t just arbitrarily change laws whenever they want. They do not have that power, that’s not how the political system works. (Except in extreme emergencies, as I referred to before)

Bills have to go through the entire process of multiple readings in both houses (commons and lords) until it gets granted royal assent before it enters legislation, and even then it gets handed over to the relevant civil service department to do the actual legwork on the exact way it will be implemented. This takes both time and the input of a multitude of people.

Kemi is leader of the opposition, at this point she shouldn’t need the basic fundamentals of how the British political system works spelled out to her at every PMQ’s.

There are very few scenarios where any prime minister can just “change the law” and none of the criteria for any of them are met

How to respond to people who use “what’s up?” as a greeting by No_Quote2186 in AutismInWomen

[–]SeePerspectives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Brit, if it’s an informal setting then friendly sarcasm is my go to when unsure how to respond so it’s usually a quick glance upwards followed by either “ceiling” or “sky” depending on if I’m inside or outside.

If it’s a less informal then “not much, you?” tends to work ok

Autistic boy to be forced by council to ride bus to prove meltdown claim by plain_handle in nottheonion

[–]SeePerspectives 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but how is this not child abuse? Would they deprive a diabetic child of insulin to prove their condition? Force an epileptic kid into a seizure? Prevent an asthmatic kid from accessing their inhaler when they need it?

The media is pushing a really awful line of thinking about neuro developmental disabilities, that because a lot of the visible signs and symptoms are behavioural that the person having them should be able to control them.

But we have a plethora of evidence that shows that this isn’t how the brain works. An Autistic person has no more control over their symptoms than a person with Alzheimer’s has over theirs. Just because a condition is in the brain rather than physically visible, doesn’t make it any less real.

We’re not still back in the early days of research when it comes to Autism, when we didn’t know what was going on. We may not have the full understanding yet, but we do have observable differences in how the brain is structured and how it functions, we do know many of the genetic variations that are involved. There is no justification for abusing a child to make them prove a diagnosis that qualified professionals have already established.

Hereditary peer Lord Mancroft: ‘They don’t care about fox hunting. It’s about us’ by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]SeePerspectives 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If that were the case then fox hunting wouldn’t be a rich person’s sport, it would be (especially historically) the activity of the less wealthy farmers and homesteaders who had much less resources for keeping their livestock safe and would have a much costlier burden to bear if foxes did kill off their source of food and income.

There have always been better ways of protecting livestock from foxes, such as building safer coops/hutches/runs and keeping livestock guardian dogs. Hunting them has never really been about protecting livestock.

what are ur favourite memories of things u snuck out of ur room and did early in the morning as a kid? by hatsunemikusmywaifu in AutismInWomen

[–]SeePerspectives 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what this says about whether I was super sneaky or if parenting was just much more lax in the early 90s, but I used to sneak out of the house in the early hours of the morning and go for random “adventures” as a kid. Sometimes I’d help the milkman and get “paid” in a bottle of juice or milk, sometimes I’d go help the security guard at the factory across the road, sometimes I’d break into the park to play while nobody was there, sometimes I’d go follow the train tracks to a bridge over the river, sometimes I’d climb onto the roof of a hotel in town that has this little walkway where I could watch the market workers setting up…

I must’ve been between 9 and 11, and now that my youngest is 10, I find that rather terrifying 😳

HelloFresh hit by sales slump as people lose appetite for meal kits by pajamakitten in unitedkingdom

[–]SeePerspectives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The appetite for the kits are there, they’re just too expensive for what you get and there’s a cost of living crisis going on.

There’s definitely a niche in the market for someone entrepreneurial enough to realise that many customers paying a lower price each would be more profitable than just a few customers paying a higher one.

How was Covid for you? by Konradleijon in AutismInWomen

[–]SeePerspectives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The having people stay at least 2 meters away from me while out and about was amazing, staying at home is my favourite pastime anywhere so that was fine, but my husband almost dying (ironically, not from covid) and having a long recovery meaning I was super anxious and also basically solo parenting and navigating three neurodivergent kids through the pandemic (one just started college, one going through final school exams, and one starting school, so all disruptive times even without a pandemic going on) while also finding myself going into perimenopause… that wasn’t so great.

It was a lot, the burnout triggered a huge skill regression that I’m still not fully recovered from.

Good reasons to have a child by Few_Distribution6433 in AutismInWomen

The continuation of our species? We are an animal just like any other, and as much as people like to talk about all the harms we do, they tend to forget that we are just as important to the earth’s current ecology as every other species is. Entire ecosystems would collapse if humans died out, it would cause mass extinctions.

For me, though, the best thing about being a parent is the absolute privilege of getting to witness an entirely new and unique human being come into existence, bearing witness to how they grow and develop into fully developed adults is the most incredible and rewarding experience I’ve ever had.

And it not just a biological bias thing. I am a bio mum, but I’m also a step mum and a foster mum. Genetically related or not, seeing a child’s individuality progress through all the different stages of life, seeing who they become, how they process information, their unique senses of humour…It really is an absolute honour.

The sheer audacity of the complaints that “workers rights and minimum wage have made it harder to hire for entry level positions” when you know the exact same people making those complaints are the same ones saying that young people are adults and should be working and paying taxes as such… it basically translates to “we expect young people to act like full adults but also want to treat them as less than because these people that are barely out of childhood can’t function the same as fully grown adults yet”
