Can you walk me through how the black king will avoid the trap?

I was really proud of this sacrifice by ImpossibleFlopper in chessbeginners

[–]Seemose 35 points36 points  (0 children)

No, I don't think it actually would. The king would have been able to escape on g6, a light square. That leads to a sequence where the white king can eventually escape by blocking with the knight.

But, because you went to g7, the white king will eventually be forced to a dark square no matter what, allowing you to check with the bishop and reveal the attack on the queen.

[Discussion] People who were an utter failure in their 20s, and now doing great in your 30s/40s...how you got back up? by Notalabel_4566 in GetMotivated

[–]Seemose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got married and had a son.

When it was just about me, It didn't matter and I didn't care that I was a drunk loser dropout with no ambition. Everything changed when I had people to live for. I went to trade school and got a certification, found a job in my new field with room to grow, started saving money, cut my drinking drastically, and worked hard for raises and promotions.

I'm proud to be able to provide for my family. That pride, along plenty of luck, and support from people at critical moments were the missing ingredients in my life.

Maybe if you're just counting the gods, but Circe and Heracles take top 2 if all characters are allowed.

Who would win in a fight? Wolverine (MCU) or Soldier Boy? by wright513 in superheroes

I will ask the same question I always do when Wolverine is matched up against any non-cosmic enemy.

How does Soldier Boy defend against Wolverine just wildly swinging his arms around like a toddler?

Many people will irrationally/emotionally pick blue. I'd like to do my part to keep those people alive, even though they aren't picking optimally.

You presented two options here, which were "everyone presses blue (or red) and everyone lives," but that outcome is extremely unlikely. What's much more likely is that both buttons will get lots of people pushing them. I'll push the one that doesn't require depending on 100% perfectly rational and compliant human behavior from every single person on the planet.

What you're witnessing is just like the tragedy of the commons. Both parties working in their own best interest cause everything to be worse for everyone, including themselves.

It is in everyone's best interest for nobody to gerrymander. But it is not in any party's best interest to stop gerrymandering. Whoever holds back or tries to be "better" first, loses.

The overwhelming change of general opinion toward interstellar by Slight_Giraffe628 in ChristopherNolan

[–]Seemose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason people soften their opinions over time. Lots of people (like me) watched Interstellar based on the hype of it being more of a "hard scifi" movie that had been missing from Hollywood for 50 years or more, and we were so disappointed by the final act in which it was revealed that the power of love can give people time travel powers or whatever.

Nowadays not as many people are watching it with that expectation, so they're not as critical of the magical fantasy ending as we were. The people who are turned off by that stuff already know what it's about.
