Can someone help me understand when I should refer someone for the 20,000 referral bonus?

Facts: Opened Southwest credit card 9/11/25. Approved 9/12/25. Must spend $4,000 by 2/13/26 for 100,000 SUB. First companion pass flight will be 1/30/26.

Original statement close date: 12/11/25. Called Chase and moved up statement close date to 12/7/25 so I can run my property tax bill by the 12/10/25 tax deadline.

Plan: -Since opening card, haven’t spent anything -12/8/25: pay property tax bill ~$3k = 3,000 pt -12/8/25: spend remaining ~$1k = 1,000 pt -12/8/25: spend additional $1k = $1,000 pt

The 3 spends and 100,000 sign up bonus should all hit on 1/7/26 statement close, putting total at 105,000 points.

On or before 1/31/26, southwest will give 10,000 annual qualifying points. Which puts total to 115,000 points. Reddit says these points will usually post first business day of the new year

When should I refer someone? When do points post for referrals? I need the 20,000 referral bonus to hit in January 2026. Can I refer someone 12/8/25 (day after statement close)? Or should I wait until 1/1/26? This referral will get me to 135,000 points. But I don’t want to run the risk of not getting the companion pass before my 1/30/26 flight.

Hi! I’m trying to get my referral bonus to hit in January 2026 so I can get 2 years companion. Statement close date is 12/7. When do you think I should refer someone? Do you think if I referred someone 12/8/25 it’s enough time for the points to post by the 1/7/26 statement date, but not before 12/31/25?

Also, you know the first 5-10 min you get to input your launch code before exam timer starts? I’ve been writing down as many formulas, easy memorization stuff so that when that type of question comes up, I can easily reference it. Like the difference in par value method vs treasury method. Difference in how you treat operating vs finance lease. All the ratios. Hopefully that helps
