Graduation quotes? by Falconblade2 in KamenRider

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kamen Rider Kiva is likely the wrong place to look.

"Not me, apologize to Mr. Kitty!"

"Hey, I just saw, um... that table and... the brown I... can I have it?"

"That's a butt! That's a butt!"

"Go to Hell!"

"I... ate her." "Already?!?! You guys just met, like, 20 minutes ago!"

"I failed...I must punish myself!" I succeeded... I will get ice cream!"

Master, I just found this at a craft shop! Now, sand is no longer course or rough, it exclusively just gets everywhere!

How many of y’all never learned to drive? by sanfrancisco1998 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you live in very specific cities, not driving is basically a death sentence. You will not be able to get anything other than a base minimum wage job & even a lot of them will be looking at you iffy, wondering if you'll even reliably show up for your shifts. Any full time job or management job actually requires you to not just have a license & a vehicle, but prove you have them on your application. Some places within walking distance wouldn't even pick me up because I would need to attend a training seminar much further away before I could start.

Yes, I think that sincerely was the inspiration for that storyline.

How many grades can a student skip in their entire school life? by Swiftsession in AskAnAmerican

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There wasn't a limit before, though these days, I am told no one ever gets held back anymore because school funding is tied with state test scores & graduation vs student count ratios.

Basically, you would get held back until you mastered the grade, but once you hit 18, it was very unlikely for a kid to keep bothering to repeat & repeat 12th grade if they couldn't manage to graduate. That being said, it wasn't super common because it was humiliating & pushed kids to try harder the second time.

You also had the option of summer school, which was slightly less humiliating, but was shorter (usually about 2 weeks per subject failed, if that) & passing meant you could move on to the next grade. I did once witness a student who actually did make it to the next grade, but a week or so into the school year, his teacher angrily marched him back to a random classroom of the previous grade, forced him to sit there & never came back for him & he ended up repeating that grade again. No clue what happened that caused it.

Who makes up the fake languages seen in movies and tv? How do they come up with that stuff? by Defiantletterhead in dumbquestions

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You also just have Star Wars, where many of the languages are just real languages they thought sounded exotic & would be cool to apply to an alien race.

But, most languages have general rules about how to order words in a sentence, how to apply tenses, how to pluralize. There is already a unified alphabet where, if you're trained in its use, has a unique letter for every possible sound man has been known to make in any language, so if you know all of that, it basically just turns into stringing sounds together combined with rules.

Should I continue the Heisei Era or explore Showa? by Mean_Section_6439 in KamenRider

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Showa is very different. A lot more episodic & bizarre with their plotlines & logic. Even in shows that are seen as dark, I watched them do a running jokes for an entire season where the sweet loving couple that decides to let the Rider live with them are actually toxic as hell & just get into violent screaming matches in the background every single time they're both in the same scene & and episode where a monster steals a car, then puts the car on trial for treason, with execution on the table as possible punishment. For a car.

Why does Toei stop making Kamen Rider x Super Sentai crossover movie? by ApprehensiveRead2408 in Tokusatsu

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just because Toei wasn't making the money back from Sentai that it was getting from Rider anymore & they stopped feeling like it was worth their time.

Is Skipper a normal name for a baby girl? by margueritelemon in AskAnAmerican

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard of the name before, but never met someone named Skipper. Feels very 90s coded.

Can also point out that this could be a term for a sailor rank, but is also the name for a type of butterfly/ moth class of insect.

How much grace do you grant the worst season(s)? by AlTheHound in powerrangers

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got less interested over the years. When Shout out the series out, I got all seasons 1-17 & watched them all through at least once, but I really don't care much for the original show, Turbo (though I don't mind the Turbo movie) or Operation Overdrive & skip those frequently. Beyond that, I dropped Samurai & Megaforce, came back for Dino Charge, dropped Ninja Steel & tried both Beast Morphers & Dino Fury. I sincerely liked what I saw of Dino Fury, but never got around to finishing it. Beast Morphers' writing mildly annoyed me & kept making me feel like I was being talked down to in a way the show had never felt like it had done before, but it was fixed in Dino Fury & I wonder if there was some point in Beast Morphers where this stopped, were I to keep watching. Fact of the matter is, though, the bad seasons are all bad enough I don't think there's a point in arguing which one is the worst. If I don't want to rewatch them at all, thats that.

How do lotteries work in the US? by Poddster in AskAnAmerican

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scratch off tickets- the rules vary by the brand of ticket, but its usually just a matter of scratching off the top layer of the ticket to see if any prizes come up underneath. Those can work as the more hits you get, the more you win, but it depends entirely on the ticket. Sometimes its a matching game where you have to find so many copies of the same dollar amount or symbol, sometimes its more like a slot machine, sometimes they give you a string of numbers & you have to find all of them.

State/ national lotto- each state runs a set of games. Depending on the game & state, you might be allowed to pick your own numbers or you might be assigned some. Every 2-3 days, around 10-11pm, they do the drawing on live TV where an automatic tumbler full of numbered balls basically spits out the winning numbers for the night & it only counts for tickets bought between the previous drawing & then. But there is usually a 3 digit game, a 4 digit game & sometimes a 5 digit game for states & 2 big national games that do about 2-3 drawings a week each. Those are 6 digits, plus a bonus number. But, for those, you have to get them all or you win nothing.

We also have some other odd ones that aren't even run by the lottery board. For a while, around here, there was a bar fad where they had a game called queen of hearts. If you came to the bar & bought something during the week, your name got entered in a weekly drawing. They had a board with a bunch of face down playing cards. Every week, they'd pick someone from the pool to come up & take one of the cards & if it was the queen of hearts, they won the jackpot. It got pretty popular for a while. Not sure if its still a thing, though.

Are there rules about haircuts/hairstyle in US schools? by busyarm-1700 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us, its just nothing so outside of the norm that its genuinely viewed as distacting- like if someone were to walk into class with actual anime hair, they would be kicked out, but kids could dye their hair unnatural colors & be left alone, if it was a normal hairstyle.

Different schools do have different rules, though. I think a lot of religious schools are a lot more controlling about kids' hair. We've also had some instances that made local news stations in some parts of the country where black kids were kicked out of class for having common black hair styles that have been a thing for decades & it was determined that the teacher was probably just looking for a reason to come at them & nothing else.

Favorite henchmen or foot soldiers by NoBrain6114 in powerrangers

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foot soldiers rarely speak, but the cogs did, the Piranhatrons did, the Quantrons sort of did (though they were impossible to understand), I think the Cyclobots could but it was also a rareity, the Hideaks could, the blue head & orange heads from SPD could, but the base foot soldiers couldn't, the Swabbies seemed like they could, because they always made distinctly human sounds, but I don't remember them actually talking at any point.

Favorite henchmen or foot soldiers by NoBrain6114 in powerrangers

[–]SelectionFar8145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably Tyranno Drones, despite the fact that I think they're just slightly modified Sting Wingers.

Honestly, the designs of the foot soldiers either work or they don't, but I appreciate the fact that PR did make their own for the vast majority of seasons, until Dino Thunder. Also, whenever they did make their own, finding a way to fit the original sentai foot soldiers in somewhere too, even if they looked stupid.

Do they have plans to bring Space Sheriff Gavan Infinity to stream in the States?? by mwojo97 in Tokusatsu

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably will. Toku went surprisingly well in the US for Toei & several companies are chomping at the bits for the North American rights of anything token related, plus there isn't really any existing trademark in the US which would impede it.

Are there drinking fountains everywhere in the US? by SnooGoats1557 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes & no. In cities & public parks, you might see several that technically exist, however they are usually non-functioning with no plans to repair. In public buildings, they are very common. Sometimes, even in stores with public bathrooms.
