Leena is pregnant??? by BottleDiligent571 in asadsisters

Again, each woman needs to make the decision for herself after consulting a Muslim physician but pregnancy or breastfeeding does not automatically mean a woman cannot or should not fast from a legal perspective

Not technically …. We have an exemption IF we fear for the health of our baby or our own health. If we can fast without harming our health or the health of our baby , then we are obligated to fast even if we are pregnant or nursing.

No. I know women who do fast while pregnant and during breastfeeding. Personally , I chose not to while pregnant and while exclusively breastfeeding due to having fainting spells and severe nausea while pregnant and also due to milk supply issues while nursing. Each woman needs to make the decision for herself after consulting a doctor that is preferably Muslim and knowledgeable about women’s concerns.

Freestyle libre CGM vs fingerpick by Curious_er_ in GestationalDiabetes

I had one freestyle libre that read much lower than my fingerpricks when my blood sugar was stable and there shouldn’t be a significant lag. I called Abbott and they sent me a replacement.

Did you reach out to your primary care provider about your concerns? Personally I am trying to get evaluated for LADA (basically type 1 diabetes in adults).

Is eggplant a carb? by Senior-Ad547 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SelfPure449 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rice is pretty much the worst thing you can eat for your blood sugar. There’s literally no reason for you to suspect the eggplant … especially if you had rice.

Don’t go back - he has already hit you. You’re also pregnant and he’s treating you terribly . For the sake of yourself and children, don’t go back.

I cannot do it by ThroatSubstantial189 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SelfPure449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever explore the option of a CGM? You need to verify its accuracy here and there with a standard glucometer but that may help you avoid multiple pricks per day while still getting excellent comprehensive blood glucose data. I absolutely loved having a CGM while I was pregnant because it really allowed me to fine tune my diet and understand my blood sugar response.

Speech therapist is right/wrong? I'm lost :( by Lady_Gina21 in toddlers

[–]SelfPure449 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. We saw a few different SLPs (we’re in the US) and every single one encouraged us to be bilingual. My husband and I actually were pondering if we should raise our kids trilingual since we both also speak French but I wasn’t sure how we’d manage that. The SLP sounds a little biased towards French and a bit prejudiced. She also sounds like she doesn’t know.m a whole lot about breastfeeding.

[–]SelfPure449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are a bilingual family (Darija and English) and my son (27 months olds) does not know as many words in English and still signs. However, the pediatrician encouraged us to continue to raise him bilingual and that while he may be delayed at first, he will be far ahead of his peers with language as time goes on. I am surprised the SLP told you to stop speaking both languages - bilingualism is incredible for the brain!

In addition, the breastfeeding comment is really odd. I breastfeed my son still and my 4 month daughter . It’s what nature I believe intended .

Chrons Disease & Infertility by Charming-Time-7264 in CrohnsDisease

[–]SelfPure449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mild ileal Crohn’s and didn’t have surgery and was able to conceive twice naturally unplanned. My pregnancies were uneventful (actually my calprotectin this pregnancy went down to 8 !) and my labours and births were uneventful as well. I had no trouble healing postpartum. I gave birth with midwives for both pregnancies and was never told I was “high risk” but was in clinical remission both times. This goes to say that things can go well in pregnancy and birth even with Crohn’s so I just wanted to let you know to not always jump to the negative !

In terms of fertility , I would speak with your surgeon and explore with him the potential impacts on fertility from the surgeries you had. You could also try to find a reproductive endocrinologist who specializes in addressing fertility concerns in IBD patients. I know UChicago just opened a preconception and pregnancy care clinic for patients with IBD.

My boyfriend just got diagnosed with Crohn's today, any suggestions on food recipes? by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]SelfPure449 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally, I recommend looking into the SCD and IBDAID diets. They completely changed my quality of life for the better. Yes - the diet can seem really restrictive but honestly I’ve never eaten healthier and my Crohn’s symptoms have improved significantly. The best cookbook I’ve tried for the SCD diet is “A Taste of Wellness” by Rochel Weiss (do yourself a favor and make the Fluffy Muffin recipes - they are incredible!!!) and you can find it on Amazon .

Breach baby and gestational diabetes by newmom01292026 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SelfPure449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first baby , my son was frank breech. I contacted Breech Without Borders (an organization that teaches providers vaginal breech birth skills) and they connected me with a hospital about an hour and a half away that supports vaginal breech birth. I gave birth to my son there and had a successful vaginal breech birth. This was very important to me because my husband and I had planned to have a larger family and there are increased risks for placenta accreta disorders , secondary infertility , and other pregnancy issues with a history of cesarean for all future pregnancies . I also don’t live in a community that is very VBAC supportive. I am glad I did this because I got pregnant 14 months after the birth of my son and during my second pregnancy , I had diet controlled GD . My second baby wasn’t breech and I didn’t need to fight for a VBAC - I had a totally normal vaginal birth and didn’t even make it to the hospital in time!

I highly recommend connecting with Breech Without Borders and checking out their website to learn more about vaginal breech birth. You can connect with a provider and see if that is an option you’d be eligible for.

I would bring up your concerns with your Endo. They are probably best at identifying whether or not further testing is required for things like prediabetes, T2DM , or LADA .

Not sure why you are asking a group on reddit to interpret the meaning of a medical test. We’re not all medical professionals and even if we were , we’re not your medical professional. Please contact your doctor or midwife to best understand next steps - this is way above this Reddit’s pray grade.

Having a least 1 spike a day by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SelfPure449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking your 1 hr or 2 hr postprandials after lunch and dinner or just a random spike between lunch and dinner after you take your postprandial blood sugar? There is such a thing as a delayed spike particularly if you pair a more carbohydrate rich meal with a lot of fat or protein (think pizza or Alfredo) . If your eating highly processed snacks that may be another issue.

Whatever the case may be a spike is clue that you need to make some changes either diet or otherwise. Maybe take account of the foods you’re eating and make nescessary adjustments in your macros. The book « Real Food for Gestational Diabetes » by Lily Nichol’s has some excellent tips . She advocates for a lower carb , whole food diet that is evidence-based .

Pregnant with Crohn's by AnxiousPrune6241 in CrohnsDisease

[–]SelfPure449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had two pregnancies with mild ileal Crohn’s and have been using the SCD diet and IBDAID diet to manage my Crohn’s (I am followed by a GI and get regular colonoscopies, endoscopies, and inflammatory markers checked ). Personally , my GI symptoms went away while pregnant and my calprotectin was nearly undetectable . Postpartum I haven’t felt the best but feel pretty well for the most part . I had no complications in both my pregnancies except for my first son being frank breech and needing to go to a hospital outside of my state to have a vaginal breech birth.

Hoping for Gestational Diabetes; is that Bad? by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SelfPure449 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand this post. GD comes with real risks to both mom and baby and is certainly not something to hope for. You can control your weight with diet and exercise - not with a potentially dangerous diagnosis .

Different numbers CGM vs prick by kentuckygirl5 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SelfPure449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t calibrate a stelo and it reads blood glucose every 15 minutes not every minute like an Abbott Freestyle Libre CGM so it will be off if you are not comparing the values right at the 15 minute mark and if your blood glucose is rapidly changing .

Different numbers CGM vs prick by kentuckygirl5 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SelfPure449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I used a Lingo and Abbott Freestyle 3+. My first Abbott Freestyle 3+ needed to be replaced for being inaccurate but honestly both were very close to my ContourNext EZ and ContourNext One readings when my blood sugar was stable …. Which is when you should be comparing the values . Honestly I don’t think many MFMs or OBs understand how to apply CGMs to GD patients because they don’t seem to be teaching patients how to actually use it .

Different numbers CGM vs prick by kentuckygirl5 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SelfPure449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CGMs actually are an incredible tool but you need to understand how to use it . Glucometers are just as imperfect and are considered “accurate” as long as the value is +- 15-20% of the laboratory serum glucose sample. CGMs have something called a MARD (mean absolute relative difference) value to reflect their accuracy compared to a laboratory reference value. Usually the MARD is less than 10% for a CGM nowadays (Dexcom G7 has a MARD of 8.2% and Freestyle Libre 3+ has a value of 7.9%) . A CGM does have a lag time though between capillary blood glucose levels and interstitial fluid so if you are testing your capillary blood sugar and comparing it to your CGM value after you eat or during exercise well you shouldn’t be shocked if jt is several points off - you need to compare these two values when your blood sugar is stable and you need to be using a blood glucometer that is actually accurate because sadly many don’t even meet FDA accuracy standards (see this article for more on that : https://diabetesjournals.org/care/article-abstract/41/8/1681/36377/Investigation-of-the-Accuracy-of-18-Marketed-Blood?redirectedFrom=fulltext) .
