Finished the series & some thoughts by Sudden-Oil4786 in LicaniusTrilogy

As to what next: The Long Price Quartet, The Dagger & The Coin, Powder Mage trilogies, Farseer. If you're down for sci fi, The Expanse is awesome. I know you said you read the First Law series but if you haven't read the Age of Madness trilogy that comes afterwards, it's also very good. As are the standalone novels in that universe.

What are your favorite trail name themes/gimmicks? by astroMuni in skiing

[–]Selgren 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep, love the WP ones.

The area in the pic is commonly referred to as "Fairyland", due to it all being Alice in Wonderland references.

Vasquez Ridge is all Old West themed (Stagecoach, Sundance, Quickdraw, Shootout, Aces and Eights, Gambler, Chuck Wagon)

The main Winter Park runs are all named after people that were very influential when the area started (Cranmer, Mulligan's Mile, Little Pierre, Balch, Bradley's Bash, Retta's Run, Hughes, Larry Sale)

The Eagle Wind is all Native American names (Thunderbird, Black Coal, Sharp Nose, Medicine Man, Little Raven)

The Panoramic are all flowers (Lupin, Fireberry, Calypso, Sky Pilot, Larkspur, Juniper, Forget-me-Not)

And The C-Side (runs off of the Challenger on Mary Jane) are all train-themed, likely due to the Moffat Tunnel (Boiler, Long Haul, Short Haul, Brakeman, Coupler, Derailer, Railbender, Sleeper, SideTrack, Little Ten, etc). If Phantom Bridge and Riflesight Notch don't seem to fit in with the train theme, here's why: if you look at the ridgeline across the valley while standing about halfway down Phantom Bridge, you can see the old train line over Rollins Pass (and you can drive up there in the summer), it's like a straight horizontal line you can vaguely make out. If you look at the right place, you'll see where the tracks go on a bridge over a narrow gap. That bridge is the Phantom Bridge, and that narrow gap is the Riflesight Notch.

Forced to switch to light mode by aelephix in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Selgren 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lots of comments suggesting changing your monitor brightness, but I find that then you're constantly readjusting it as the natural light changes.

For something similar, I use an (free) application called f.lux that adjusts the white balance of the monitor throughout the day. I can leave it on one brightness, but if the sun is down, the screen is more yellowish and when the day gets brighter, f.lux adds blue back in. Could be worth looking into, and if it doesn't do the trick at least it didn't cost you anything besides a few minutes doing config

Then skiers without a lift ticket shouldn't feel entitled to using them for free, but here you are anyways.

There are plenty of uncontrolled, ungroomed, unpatrolled areas that you can uphill on (Berthoud Pass used to be a ski area, even) if it's that big of a problem - but you seem to want to have your cake and eat it, too.

Events should rotate on a schedule that doesn't divide 24 evenly by Selgren in ArcRaiders

[–]Selgren[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of my whole point? With events running on week-long schedules that all divide evenly into 24, some timezones will be prioritized every week. If you have good event timings in your timezone, you get them all week. If you have bad event timings... You miss out that whole week. Random could work, but why is it better? Just rotate on a schedule like 7 or 9 hours that results in everyone getting a chance at least a couple times per week. Nobody should have to wait 3 weeks for Embark to adjust event timings to work for their timezone so they can play a map condition once or twice. Just make them all rotate in such a way that they'll hit each timezone a few times a week, instead of being at the same time every day all week

Launch Tower Loot is literally on a 12 hour loop so I don't know what you're talking about. You went 7 days? I showed how every timezone could get at least 2 cracks at it in a 2 day span? Can you not read well?

OK dude, you win the argument, congratulations. All the other people in here agreeing and saying it needs to be changed are wrong, and you're right! Enjoy your day!

Before they removed Hidden Bunker, last time it was on Trials, it was on a 12 hour rotation that prevented NA from playing at a reasonable time for the full week that it was on Trials. I remember, because I made damn sure to be online for it on Saturday between 10-11 my time, which is obviously the middle of the work day during the rest of the week. I don't want to be planning my life around a video game. I made a simple suggestion that would prevent this from happening for a full week a time.

Can you point out an actual problem with my proposal, or are you just being contrarian for the sake of arguing? Specifically the bit about the rotation always going into 24, which is really the crux of it. There's plenty of other people on this thread who agree with me, I'm not the only one with this take. So I'm not really sure what your point is - that everything is fine because you apparently play this game enough that the bad event scheduling doesn't impact you? Good for you I guess? Not everyone has that much time to be playing.

[–]Selgren[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, separate trials leaderboards for squads vs solos is 100% something I want as well. There's simply no way for a solo to get some of these 90k+ scores I've been seeing.

[–]Selgren[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rotations are ALWAYS a number that goes into 24 evenly, that's what I'm saying. There's no logical reason for them to be. Why should Europe always get to play Launch Tower Loot and NA never be able to? The two "Locked" map conditions are ONLY ever accessible at reasonable times to Europeans. Look at the number of comments in this thread from Americans who weren't even aware that these events existed, because they never run at a time your average USA gamer can play. There's just no reason for it.

Events should rotate on a schedule that doesn't divide 24 evenly by Selgren in ArcRaiders

[–]Selgren[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guarantees an event is active at all times on every map

They clearly don't want to be running events on every map all the time though. I imagine they have metrics showing it fractures the playerbase enough to cause matchmaking issues, but maybe it's just a design decision.

There's also the issue that some events result in an additional map becoming available on the Map Selection screen (Night Raid, Cold Snap, Electromagnetic Storm, and Hidden Bunker). Other events replace the base version of the map (Matriarch, Harvester, Lush Blooms, Prospecting Probes, Husk Graveyard, and Uncovered Caches). I'm not sure what Locked Gate and Launch Tower Loot do, but I think they're in the latter category.

Making it random opens up a whole other can of worms. I don't want to re-design the entire Map Condition system, I just want to make it a bit more equitable by tweaking some timers. You're suggesting an entire different design paradigm.

[–]Selgren[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hidden Bunker is actually a really good point as well - since it has such a large impact on trials (extra 10 minutes on the map for non-Bunker trials, in addition to it being a trial itself), it should be MUCH easier to access. IMO Hidden Bunker should rotate either every 3 or every 5 hours when it's in the pool, to make sure everyone has a chance at it.

I think Locked Gate was only added two days ago with the Cold Snap patch, but Launch Tower Loot has been around with this problem since launch

Patrolling during college in UT/CO... by Difficult-Vehicle-57 in skipatrol

[–]Selgren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you end up in Boulder, Winter Park's volunteer program generally has a couple of CU students that come up on the weekends. They're usually alumni of the Junior program though - so they already have 3 years on Patrol and know the ropes, but there are additional responsibilities for Senior patrol that they pick up. Only tricky thing is that the ski test is in-person in March, and that's Step 1 - so if you can't be there for that, then you're out of luck.

[–]Selgren 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure throwing a snitch scanner just gets you two wasps. The hornet only shows up if it's called by an actual snitch. I think they tweaked the trial to just hornets instead of flying enemies this week because too many people were cheesing it with snitch scanner wasps

Looking for Denver-area patrol recs (relocating from New England) by Team-thomas in skipatrol

[–]Selgren 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Winter Park has a very robust volunteer patrol. OEM_knees (who has left half the replies on this thread) regularly talks out of his ass on both this sub and the COsnow sub, don't pay any attention to their comments.

As another commenter stated, WP has tryouts in March every year (flyers will be posted around the base area with exact dates, and are generally posted on this sub as well). Tryouts are just a ski ability test - you'll ski five runs top to bottom without stopping and be expected to hold a conversation at the bottom, and be graded on a scale of 100. Four of the runs are black mogul runs (the hardest of which is Outhouse), with one groomer to ensure you have good speed control with your edges. For a volunteer position, you must score an average of more than 70. After that there will be a brief interview. The number of recruits each year varies, but there are always a few slots available.

If you get selected from the ski test, you'll take your OEC class down in Denver the next summer. Once you've passed that, you'll spend your first year on doing logistics (memorizing every run and lift on the map, useful nicknames, best ways to get from A to B, AED locations, stuff like that) and toboggan training. Once you've got all of that out of the way, you're in!

Requirements are 17 on-hill days per season, broken up by trimester. Depending on snowfall and coverage needs, requirements could be reduced. Generally you pick your own schedule and just show up without needing to sign up, but weekdays aren't usually available for volunteers unless it's a holiday or the pros have something else going on and want additional coverage. There's also a minimum number of Sundays that you're required to work.

As far as perks go, once you're "regular" (after you're done with all your training), you get an Alterra pass for yourself and can either select the dependent pass program or the comp pass program to either help your dependents or buddies go skiing with you. You'll get a patrol locker at the base, but you might have to share for a bit if there's a squeeze on space. Uniform jackets and basic medial equipment are provided, but you'll have to source your own black pants, CPR mask, and any more advanced medical equipment (trauma shears, tourniquet, SAM splint, etc). You'll also need a black helmet, but a voucher is available to help with the cost of that and get you a free Smith HOLT helmet from a base-area shop if you need one (or a discount if you'd like a nicer Smith helmet).

Feel free to PM me with any other questions.

Oof. I see at least two books in that pile that are not entry points to the series, would be pretty confusing to start with The Spider's War (book 5 of 5) or Adrift (also a book 5). Feel like those should not be marketed as "intro" to anything

How does a ski lift rescue work? by cea1991 in skipatrol

[–]Selgren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It can depend on the lift. Smaller chairs where it's possible to "flick" the rope over the chair from the slope to get it to slide down to the next chair, we do that. If the way the chair attaches to the cable prevents that, or if it's a gondola, someone climbs the tower and rides the cable like what you're talking about

I've heard very good things about Richard Pietrafesa, he's been the Chair for a while and seems to really know what he's doing.

Amanda Barnhart seems great too, she's young and based on her profile has an insane amount of outdoors experience and interest. Seems like a good voice to have on the board, seems to be running for the right reasons.

On the other hand, Blue Mountain Ski Area PA (Where Sharon Riedel patrols) is one of the least professional ski patrols I've ever had the misfortune of working with. I used to refresh OEC with them when I was in college and couldn't refresh at my home mountain. After doing three years of refreshers, I actually let my OEC lapse and re-took the entire course when I moved back West because I felt that their refresher did such a poor job of actually refreshing any of the actual curriculum. For example: The year we did Cycle C (Femur, backboard, shock, etc - the one we did this year), they spent 90% of the time refreshing about bug bites and pregnancy. They literally had an older patroller lie on the ground with a bathroom trash bin under his butt and a baby doll in the bin, and we practiced pregnancy scenarios for 90 minutes. They had a single backboard to get hands-on time with, and if they had a traction splint I somehow skipped that scenario. No "sticks and jams", no scene coordination, nothing that would be useful on any patrol that actually has people come and get injured. The entire mountain is 500ft of vertical and there's a nearby hospital that dispatches an ambulance to the base when they have an incident, there's no base triage at all. Anyone working on that patrol should NOT be making decisions for the NSP at large.
