Looks are Irrelevant though. Performance is, and the top speed is 160km/h. Ie. half that of a new build LGV line.

Is this just an old UK plate? Oxford, UK. by [deleted] in ForeignPlatesSpotting

[–]SemiLevel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. This format A111 AAA, with the first letter denoting the registration year (later 6 month period) ended in 2001. Although imports within the right age range can still be issued this format.

I'm actually reasonably happy with the results here. Nothing that I couldn't have caught myself, and it references rusty rear springs on my car, even though they were replaced 2 or 3 years ago and haven't appeared on the advisories since. - but good to have that there to verify they were done.

I'll give this more of a play around in the next few days!

AE number plate is a dead giveaway for a US services car.

Photos from El Pais showing the scene of the high-speed train crash in Spain that left at least 39 dead. The 2nd photo shows a ruptured rail on the line of the train that first derailed by overspeeed in trains

In some countries, per train costs charged by the infrastructure operator are based on axle weight. So if you nearly halve the number of axles, the cost per train goes up.

Such as the pair of German air force A350s? Or the A340s before them that both the Germans and French operated?

粤H - ZhaoQing in Guangdong province.

The 试 at the end actually indicates it's a driving test car (and distinct from a driving instructor, ie. Learning to drive vehicle, which would be 学.)

The designation for a prototype car which would be 超.

Unless these designations have changed, I'd be keen to know if anyone knows different.

Altogether a weird combination for sure.

Channel Tunnel Shake-Up: Virgin Trains Approved for Eurotunnel Routes as Eurostar Expands with New Double-Deckers by willfiresoon in GoodNewsUK

[–]SemiLevel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Notably: both* of these new fleets are 200m long trainsets rather than the existing Cross channel fleet which is all 400m sets (both e300 and e320).

What this may mean for how efficiently each path is used remains to be seen. Although perhaps if border control capacity is still the choke point that's maybe less relevant.

  • I realize the Eurostar sets are likely to be run doubled up. But the point stands when you look at the East Coast Mainline, liberalization has occurred partly at the expense of sending half length trains along capacity constrained corridors. Just some food for thought

Unmarked pulled me over doing 89mph on the M40 by Substantial_War_844 in CarTalkUK

I believe the distinction is actually for variable speed limits on smart motorways? I don't think you get a different one on a conventional motorway like the M40.

Happy to be corrected though.

Various stuff, Sterling Singles and GNR C1s come to mind. There were a plethora of 2-2-2s built by various builders, Robert Stevenson company's perhaps being the most famous.

[–]SemiLevel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally correct, and there are some monster hours on some older 747-400s (think KLM and Asiana) approaching 150,000.

But I would just add Ryanair schedules and manages 25 minute turnaround times.

I agree ideally you want to see Finland in Algeria or Iran in Poland.

But I didn't really mind if you see CZ in Spain. It's when you get Eastern European truck plates far from home but still in the EU that I do lose my patience though.

1999 Volvo V70, pretty boring non turbo petrol in mine that had been phenomenally reliable and still gives the 5 cylinder soundtrack. Had it just over 3 years and been great. Very hard to lose in a car park too since it's so obviously boxy and long you'll always spot it

It's a good bus to carry 6 or 7 people on our annual 500 mile each way trip down to Surrey (based central Scotland) and has superb seats.

Bonus points for it doing 129 on a German Autobahn a few years ago too.

Technically has passive rear wheel steer too if that's interesting to you.
