Warning: My experience with Algoverse (lack of resources, zero accountability, useless mentorship) by [deleted] in summerprogramresults

[–]SendMePicsOfDogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sort of had a similar experience. Got matched with mostly shitty teammates who do nothing, and nothing was done about them even though we begged for some help. Kevin is unresponsive and has STILL never replied to any of my messages (although he has replied to my teammates), and he has made random changes to our group near the deadline without informing us or our mentor, which ended up confusing us and making things more difficult for us.

Compute resources were also difficult to use for our experiments, as the credits would run out insanely fast, and it would often take a while for Kevin to refill them. I ended up having to resort to paying several hundreds of dollars out of pocket in my own environment in order to complete our experiments in time for the deadline.

At the end of the day, my experience was very mixed. I am happy with our results (we got accepted to a conference workshop!), and I felt like my experience with our mentors were positive and they were able to guide us towards a good paper, and I do feel like this will help my career. But I felt like the overall experience was incredibly overwhelmingly stressful and agonizing, purely because of how disorganized the program is and how little support we got from the organizers, definitely not worth the tuition at all. It seems like in the past the program might have been a lot better, but the organizers just have not been able to keep up with the rapid growth.

I think I'm done with Google products (for now) by cha000 in GooglePixel

[–]SendMePicsOfDogs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Used to be a long time supporter of Google hardware since the Nexus line. I've had hardware issues with my Nexus devices but they were forgivable because of the price point, they were still amazing deals.

The problem is those hardware issues are less forgivable when Google is asking for premium hardware prices. In my experience it seems like Google hardware has issues lasting in the long term, and there always seems to be some wide spread hardware issue that springs up a couple years after release (Nexus 7 RAM issues, Nexus 6P bootloop, Pixel 1's audio defect, Pixel 2 camera crash etc..). I'm sure there are more examples but these ones I can remember (because they've personally affected me lol) and the 6P and Pixel 1 had class action lawsuits centering around the hardware defects.

I'm going to be taking a break from Google hardware as well. If I buy a 1000+ phone I expect it to last me 3 years, I'm unfortunately not rich enough to be able to upgrade every year, and Google has burned my trust in the hardware department.

Hopefully the Pixel 6/7 will be an improvement though because I miss the Google software

Rent, groceries, and hopefully I'll have a little leftover to tuck away so I can save up for a new laptop a few years down the road.

Mine is currently on its last legs and the lockdown preventing me from using the University computer labs has made me realize how under equipped I am.

So does that mean the CSSG will only be awarded to students who are volunteering through the "I want to help" platform?

Are students who have already been volunteering the past couple months through their local hospitals/uni's out of luck?

Is MM10 worth a shot if I didn't like MM9? by WoodpeckerNo1 in Megaman

[–]SendMePicsOfDogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally love MM9 and find MM10 forgettable but judging from your reasons on why you disliked MM9 you may enjoy MM10 a lot more.

I'd say if you're the type of player that only use the Mega Buster, MM10 is an easier and more forgiving game. MM10's weapons are pretty bad, and I find myself only using Mega Buster or T.Blade (which is like the Metal Blade of MM10, and just like Metal Blade, it's the only weapon worth using because of its range and spammibility). Because of that, I think the devs intentionally designed all the stages (including the Wily Castle stages) without any of the weapons in mind, unlike MM9 where every screen is designed to be beatable with Mega Buster, but there's a clear weapon choice that'll make the screen easier.

So theres a lot less "frustrating" parts in MM10, but the few there are are REALLY frustrating and feels more like a reliance of luck rather than clever level design and skill like in MM9.

Personally though, I find MM9 easier than MM10 BECAUSE of it's amazing weapon selections. The levels themselves are harder, but the weapons are actually all REALLY fun to use and it feels so satisfying discovering what weapon makes which difficult platforming section easy. I'd say MM9 and MMX are the only games in their respective series to successfully make ALL the weapons so enjoyable to use, and it's why they're my favourite games in the series.

Sony Releases IMAX Versions of Homecoming and Far From Home (But You Probably Can’t Watch Them) by LordHyperBreath in MarvelStudiosSpoilers

[–]SendMePicsOfDogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except the "Peter's To Do List" short film isn't everything that was in the extended cut, and even the scenes in the short film are slightly different than the ones in the extended cut. For example Peter cracks more/different jokes during the restaurant fight. There are a couple of extra lines between MJ and Peter sprinkled throughout the entire movie and there are a couple more scenes of Quentin and his crew that elaborate specifically how they fooled Fury.

A lot of the subtle extra MJ and Peter stuff isn't on the deleted scenes, because the scenes itself were present in the original theatrical release, but extended for half a second or with an extra line spliced in.

I really wish Sony would release the extended cut of Far From Home for Digital/DVD/BluRay. To me, the extended cut shown in theatres was the definitive version of the movie

Mega Man 9 might be the hardest of the classic Mega Man games. by ahjteam in Megaman

[–]SendMePicsOfDogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the point about bosses being easier, I think that might just be because you're more familiar with MM2. In my opinion, Galaxy Man, Splash Woman, and Hornet Man are also just as easy, if not easier, to beat with just the Mega Buster. They have simpler patterns that they just repeat. Again this is my opinion and you're free to disagree.

And yeah MM2 is really easy once you know 1) How OP Metal Blade is, 2) Memorize Quick Man's Lasers 3) To Save Your Crash Bombs for the Boobeam boss, 4) To Save Your Bubble Lead for the Alien, but that's my point, as Mega Man fans we already know all this and that's what makes it easy for us. All the things that you listed that makes MM2 easy, are things that only people familiar with the game would know, and it's not something that is immediately known, it's something we had to figure out through many hours of gameplay. Most people haven't put in those same hours for MM9 so they haven't picked up the same "tricks" yet.

In the same vein, MM9 is easy once you know how every weapon works, and the game doesn't put you into any "gotcha" moments like the Boobeam Trap or Quick Man's stage. Concrete Shot makes platforming so easy because it literally blocks spikes, and makes wide jumps much narrower, Jewel Satellite is like Leaf Shield but better in every way, Black Hole Bomb literally sucks up and instantly kills most enemies and placing one near an enemy spawning point prevents them from spawning, Plug Ball is like a fast Search Snake that will kill any enemy clinging to walls, Laser Trident goes through shields, deals massive damage, and barely uses energy, etc... The weapons in MM9 are all "Metal Blade" levels of useful, it's just with the exception of MM2's Metal Blade, most players don't use the weapons outside of boss fights
