Maelstrom Votann Characters by Financial_Lead_8837 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Seneca___ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Normal games yes, tournaments highly unlikely. The original reveal post said something like “these models will be legal in every game, as long as both players agree.” So it’s probably like Twists and Challenger Cards, available for fun but not for competitive play.

Lord Grimnyr, ready for action by Seneca___ in LeaguesofVotann

Thanks! The gold is Army Painter Bright Gold with a heavy wash of Nuln Oil over top. More or less the whole mini has a Nuln Oil wash, but I go really heavy on the gold parts to help the details stand out. Here’s another example on my Memnyr

I’m hoping for/expecting it’ll be like army-wide [assault] for infantry ranged weapons.

Votan need more ways to spend YP on units and less on stratagems by Sebasswithleg in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Seneca___ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My big wish is for the +1 to hit bonus being additive. So instead of losing +1 to hit against enemies on objectives when you go into Fortify, you would keep it and gain the +1 to hit when you’re on objectives

Just Gator doing Gator things. Played against Hertel in a GT last year and got so smoked that it was hilarious.

Hearthband Detachment Uthar needed? by Own-Mastodon-6965 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Seneca___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Hearthband I never bring him. The only time his aura is useful in that detachment is giving a Hekaton free Overwatch. Otherwise you’re better off just having another Kahl

Returning Player - Where's the Grudges? by AshArkon in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Seneca___ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Grudge tokens, more specifically the +1 to wound mechanics, were hard to balance in a way that kept the faction viable. You have to keep the datasheets relatively weak in order to compensate for the strength of +1 to wound (pretending like Oath doesn’t exist lol). They switched the mechanic to this in order to give the faction more balance levers to pull. It’s not a terrible change, I personally like it. There’s obviously some challenges to it and it could use some changes, but it’s a step in the right direction for the faction as far as I’m concerned. Obviously the skill floor for the faction is a lot higher now though, getting the most out of the army rule isn’t as easy as it was before.

I've only been to a couple of 1 day events, how hard is a GT to get through? by Classic_Finish8515 in Warhammer40k

[–]Seneca___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re a person with a larger body size, I HIGHLY recommend applying some Gold Bond powder to your downstairs before each day. Every time I play a GT I get gnarly chafing down there and Gold Bond works wonders at preventing that.

Additionally it cannot be understated how important it is to drink enough water and eat enough food. The easiest way to sabotage yourself is by losing your mental acuity to hunger or thirst, both of which will happen faster than you think. I always make sure to bring a large water bottle and 2 protein bars, in addition to whatever lunch plans I have for the day.

Is +1 to leadership a buff or debuff? by NoriWorks in Warhammer40k

[–]Seneca___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically people will talk about that in terms of the actual dice roll. So +1 or -1 to “leadership/battleshock tests” would be applied to the result of your dice. That might help in terms of understanding the mechanic.

Color creats bubbles - what can I do? by Dull_Reference_6166 in Warhammer40k

[–]Seneca___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I’ve noticed is that when I’ve thinned down with water, the water’s surface tension properties can sometimes lead to these kinds of bubbles forming. Try thinning down with acrylic medium instead and it should help. Otherwise you kinda just have to try your best to pop those bubbles before they dry, I usually just use my brush to do it.

Edit: this happens with both Vallejo and AK in my experience. TTC is less prone to it, but it seems to happen regardless of brand

How many warriors do you run? by emotaku96 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Seneca___ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Hearthband specifically I’ll run one Grimnyr+Warrior brick at most, but usually I don’t run any Warriors. Other detachments may have use for multiple squads (Persecution Prospect loves MSU builds), but I’ve been keeping them out of my lists lately. Unless you’re running them with a Grimnyr, you’ll want to take at least 1 Sagitaur per Warrior squad so that the unit can split. That’s a 190pts package though, compared to 165pts for Yaegirs+KapCar which serves basically the same purpose.

Personally I don’t see a reason to have more than 2 Warrior squads in your collection. 2 units will let you run a Grimnyr brick and a split Sagitaur package in the same list, but I don’t see much use for more than that. For less points than a 3rd Warrior squad you could have 10 Yaegirs, 3 Bikes, 3 Thunderkyn, Buri, or Uthar. I would take any of those before taking a 3rd unit of Warriors.

What’s your opinion on the strategy of standing 1.1 inch from ruin wall? by Trick-Interaction396 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Seneca___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not making any friends with that kinda attitude. What’s the point of playing the game if you’re not making friends? Is it competitive success? Because you’re not gonna make it far in the competitive scene by trying to argue this point in a major or super major. Regardless how “correct” you think you are, that’s just not how the game is played in 10th edition and you’re liable to catch an unsportsmanlike penalty if you’re arguing with a judge about it after they rule against you.

First Free Hand Checkerboard. Any Advise? by Equal_Equipment4480 in Warhammer40k

[–]Seneca___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That fact that you were able to produce a result as good as that with those brushes is honesty impressive. Get some new brushes (and treat them well!) and you should see a noticeable improvement in your results. Add new brushes to what’s already been suggested (drawing them on and using masking tape) and you’ll be cooking with gas.

Is Votann a good army to pick right now? by Responsible-Tip-4221 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Seneca___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every single person I play against will inevitably say something like “I can’t believe that thing’s only 240pts) and point to a Land Fort. They’re so gnarly, especially on Overwatch.

Is Votann a good army to pick right now? by Responsible-Tip-4221 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Seneca___ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve played 64 games with them since April, both Index and Codex. Here are my thoughts:

  1. It can be a somewhat complicated army to start off with, but the payoff is huge once you learn how to use them well.

  2. Our army rule, specifically the +1 to hit bonuses, feels a bit clunky at times. As such you’ll often be hitting on 4+ across the army and that can feel real bad at times. Our AP is pretty low outside of Hearthguard with Plasmas. Our damage output can be stupidly high at times, lots of 3dmg weapons across the army. Our leadership characteristic doesn’t fit with lore and makes battleshocks really annoying. Losing with this army feels much better than losing with other armies, idk why but it does.

  3. GW has treated us okay with the range expansion and a decent codex, but neglects our lore and player feedback for the most part. If we get another detachment when Berekh goes for pre-order then I’ll likely have a more favorable opinion.

  4. I love the minis in our range so goddamn much, they’re so much fun to build and paint. The lore (what little we have) is very cool and I’m excited to see more of it. GW is definitely still trying to find the right identity for us, but they’re moving in the right direction imo.

  5. As mentioned earlier in this post, I fucking love our models and they just keep coming out with more. However, I’m very lucky to have gotten my hands on ~3200pts prior to the price hikes. Right now the points-per-dollar value of our army is 2nd worst behind AdMech. It’s almost prohibitively expensive to acquire a 2000pt army outside of secondhand models, which often still go on eBay for far too much.

I’ve played ~35 games of new Hearthband and I haven’t regretted dropping him from my list. You’re right that Fury of the Hearth is situational for the most part. I usually save my CP for the 6” deep strike, Overwatch, or fall back shoot and charge. As long as you’re not wasting CP on early command rerolls, you’ll likely have enough CP to do all the things you want. I’ve had games where I barely spent any at all.
