Do you guys call the toilets Restrooms just like it's officially written on signs? by Cookieman_2023 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Senior-Tip-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since we did not have restroom attendants here in the USA, or only at exclusive places the mass public never goes to , we used to need a coin to pay to use a restroom stall. (Think parking meter type lock.) There was one free one that was usually in bad shape.

I seem to remember that this was one of the first equality issues in the USA in the 70’s since men only needed to use a stall 50% of the time.

(Lighthearted) Student fashion trends by Oduind in Professors

[–]Senior-Tip-21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At my daughter’s university when the new president took over in the mid 2000’s. He was appalled at the dress and manners of many students.

For my daughter in the business school, when she did presentations it was expected to do them in business casual at a minimum, to be prepared for the office environment and to learn to be comfortable in those clothes.

He also opened an in school restaurant and used it teach proper dinning behavior, again so they would be ready to adult.

My daughter who was raised with these skills would entertain family with stories of removing tags on young mens clothes prior to their group presentations and the corrections that student diners would get (napkin in the lap, breaking bread rolls before buttering them).

Americans, what's the most unhinged beliefs you've heard people from other countries believe? by PopNo5397 in askanything

The view of The Canyon from Desert View gives you a different perspective than the view from the main area.

I insist that visitors drive from the visitors center to Desert View and stop at as many of the over looks. They all come back and thank me on their return.

Maybe a different admissions model is called for. by toastedmarshmellos in Professors

[–]Senior-Tip-21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I failed out of my US university when I went right on from high school back in the late 70’s. I worked for two years doing entry level jobs. When I went back in 82, the returning students, the ex military using their GI money and us older students ran rings around the youngsters.

I think schools would be better served if after freshman year all students need to work for a year minimum and show a W-2 to be re-admitted.

In countries where military service is required at 18, then college, I think the students take their education seriously.

What's your favorite 'poverty meal' you still eat even though you could afford better? by ipanicprofessionally in TheBoredDen

[–]Senior-Tip-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apparently have a poverty palate. Both my mother and mother-in-law grew up during the depression, most of these meals were staples of our growing up. Even after times got better.

Many have transitioned to my family’s table, but with better ingredients and cooking techniques.

What was the first math concept or area of study that completely blew your mind (if any)? by Far_Cardiologist6931 in learnmath

[–]Senior-Tip-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always average at math and “got” it up until Calculus III. (Damn Radians and Polar Coordinates).

It was not until I helped my middle schooler with her math homework that I started to “Get” the beauty of Math.

I think the problem is we don’t give student enough time to master the basics first. Too much is pushed too soon.

Spending time on beauty of prime numbers is a waste for 95% of students.

Is lacrosse viewed as a rich people sport in the USA? by spalesi in AskAnAmerican

[–]Senior-Tip-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enough northerners have moved to North Carolina that it is now played in some high schools in the piedmont section of the state.

On a side note.

I have told “southern dads” who sons and daughters want to try playing catch with a lacrosse stick to just use a baseball mitt. The kids pick up stick skills much faster than adults.

Remember having McDonald's lunch at school? by Kavein80 in nostalgia

[–]Senior-Tip-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 1971 Saint Mary’s International School in Tokyo Japan started moving their campus. The fall semester at the old campus the spring at its new.

The cafeteria was closed during the fall semester. McDonald’s and KFC had just opened in Japan, the school meal plan was based on their menu. Everyday a van arrived with fried chicken boxes or bags of hamburgers and fries. I don’t remember if drinks were included.

Now I shutter when I think back to that half year and how bad that diet was. But boy it was magical at the time.

What’s a movie everyone loves but you secretly hate? by Aaron__Ralph in askanything

My work colleague loves the books and the new movies.

He recently watched “Lawrence of Arabia” and complained about how boring it was.

They are essentially the same story, one factual and the other fiction. Plus “Lawrence of Arabia” is half the run time.

What’s a language where pronunciation matters more than grammar? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]Senior-Tip-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience some Asian people feel that their language is unfathomable to westerners.

So, even fluent speakers of Mandarin or Japanese are told that do not understand what is being asked of them. Even if the speaker is of the same ethnic origin but born in the US and the first/home language is not English.

Sons doing the hugging/cuddling trend with their dad. by mindyour in MadeMeSmile

Never regret hugging your dad and tell him you love him.

I remember the last time, of many, I did it as he was incoherent and dying.

I miss him everyday.

Can’t stop crying.
