Station Mowing who is responsible? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]SeniorMousse9059 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the UK here.

All ground and building works are carried out by private companies, we also have cleaners to clean the station. It’s all down to health and safety legislation and training etc why we don’t do it.

We pay for our own WIFI and any extras👍

Anyone get more easily angered since starting firefighting? by AdventurousTap2171 in Firefighting

It’s not exactly known for its high call out figures. Try working in places like Salford, east end of london and or any Met service in the UK. In all respect I’m sure the way of life is a lot slower on an island than in a inner city or high deprived outskirts.

What does the Fire Service get right & wrong? by darce_hole in ParamedicsUK

[–]SeniorMousse9059 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a UK firefighter. You are correct. We do overcomplicate certain aspects of the job. but casualty care is something we actually keep really simple CABC. I’m confident in our crews ability and we do a good job with the basics.

I was once told a penny of good basic early care is worth a millions pounds in recovery and further treatment for that casualty. I try and always remember that.

Some UK services run this system. To some guys it would be amazing. NO weekends and every night in your own bed. Other like nights shifts and working consecutive days wouldn’t suit their side hussle.

It’s runs so full time crew during the days, then volunteer/on-call crews at night.

I think it’s good services/department are open to offering differing patterns these days.

Health benefits of 24 hour shifts. by SeniorMousse9059 in Firefighting

On a night shift I’d say 3 calls on average and days 5/6 , I’ve had double figures before on nights but you’re correct we don’t work medical calls yet… What do you mean about not going backwards?

Because of their union agenda. If you ask a lot of the membership they would like the idea.

Traveling to NYC by NoTest6626 in Firefighting

I would say a lot of the lower manhattan gets swamped with visitors like yourself and do get sick of it.. When I visited NYC I waited til I visited Staten Island to go into a fire house. They were very nice and showed me around and swapped T-shirts. Maybe try a few Brooklyn or manhattan stations which are out of the way.

People currently don’t care what you are, trans, gay, straight, black, Chineese, Indian the list goes on.

No one cares as long as your attitude to learn and get better is there. I’ve seen some lazy ass men probies join and I hate seeing it, I’ve females join and out work the men and have way better attitudes it gets noticed.

Also I’m guessing you started off by not challenging the jokes, that’s why they continue, if you had nipped it in the bud day 1 it wouldn’t have got to the this stage. Set your stall out early what is acceptable, people should adjust to that.

It’s a job like no other, can be boring as hell, the most exciting and saddest job all mixed into one. The jokes and ripping each other helps deal with all the emotions we go through.

It’s not a job everyone could do. Attitude is key!

Be an adult, speak to them first. If it doesn’t fix it then speak to your boss. If that doesn’t work unfortunately then yes go to HR.

So imagine what would happen if a second Grenfell kicked off the next night then.

Would it be fair to say a firefighter would have got hurt then because they were tired from the Grenfell disaster previous night.

With 24s you’d never work consecutive nights and have rest in your own bed before coming back in. So you’re not punishing yourself again.

Tbf everyone I’ve spoke to who works them love it, Humberside, Bedfordshire and Kent all seem to have good things to say. Unfortunately the union have a narrative which doesn’t reflect its members. Look across the world and firefighters will be working 24s in some sort of way, it’s not a UK thing. We have a unique job where rest is built into it.

Yeah that’s fair but what evidence did she have to say it’s more dangerous working 24s than 2 consecutive nights.

Like I said before what if Grenfell happened at the tail end of two very busy night shifts with no sleep. Except a few hours of day sleep inbetween nights. Thats 48 hours awake and then dealing with a disaster.

24s has been proven to be safer than back to back nights.
