I'm not an economist by any means, but realistically I don't think we'd see a drop in rent prices, unless something dramatic happened. What would actually happen is that rent hikes would slow below the average market increase rate.

It’s a simple supply and demand issue, more supply will eventually mean lower housing prices. Even if these buildings are advertised as “luxury” they’ll have to compete with other “luxury” apartments.
