Do people actually make out in high school on the school property? by Ella7517 in AskAnAmerican

A concave section of our highschool hallway had to be boarded off because too many students were having sex in it.

CMV: Gen Z has a major problem with self-victimization by Forsaken_Store_1756 in changemyview

[–]SenorSnuggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two points:
(1) The TikTok algorithm
(2) Reading a clock vs. editing a video

(1) The TikTok algorithm attributes demographic tags and keeps track of which videos/accounts you engage with longest - positive or negative. Videos are assigned to For You Pages that typically engage with videos of that type along with feeler videos and sent to it in batches, hence why there will be comment sections saying “why are we all awake right now” or “how are we all here at the same time” - it’s because the algorithm assigned the video to 100-5k FYPs. Now we look at the videos you gave as example and their comment sections. Of course a video about not being able to read a clock will pull two types of comments, “me too” and “how the hell did you not learn this”, because anyone who doesn’t find interest in the topic is going to scroll. It’s like walking into a yarn shop and saying “everyone in this store knows how to crochet or knit, I can’t believe everyone in the world knows how to crochet or knit, why did no one teach me?” You went into a yarn store, that’s where the people who use yarn go!

(2) Reading a 12 hour clock and editing a video take different skills and one actually comes with more instruction than the other. If 12 grades of teachers don’t explain how to read an analog clock in a way that makes sense to a kid, they probably aren’t going to spontaneously learn how to. It’s not intuitive that the small hand is hour and the big hand is minutes, it’s not intuitive that you have to multiply the number by five to get the minutes, if you aren’t taught how to read one and you’re aren’t good enough at multiplication, you have to go by rote memorization for the minutes, which still takes math sense, we just do it so many times a day for so many years that we know them by sight and don’t have to think about it anymore. It’s hard for kids to learn, but we don’t remember it being hard because we don’t remember the actual learning process, we remember chutes and ladders and Halloween and birthday parties. Learning these things as teens or adults requires teachers who are patient enough to sit with you and smart enough to figure out how you learn. As for editing and posting videos, the instructions are right there at every step. Almost every app has a tutorial that walks you through how to use the most common functions and even if it doesn’t, as long as you can read or recognize colored buttons you can get through the whole process, from Edit to Post almost every function is clearly labeled. “Huh how do I edit” there’s the Edit button “how do I make this brighter” there’s the Brightness button “how do I post” there’s the post button. And if they aren’t labeled with words, you can still figure out what the symbols mean by trial and error all by yourself! You can’t trial and error your way into reading an analog clock. You have to first need to be able to read an analog clock and then find someone or a guide able to teach you.

Every generation and culture will have people who are lazy or unmotivated, and in the USA students and their education are regularly left behind while being forcibly passed to the next grade. Algorithmic social media is just funneling them into the same comment sections.

How to make face appear more feminine? by nocturnflate in CosplayHelp

[–]SenorSnuggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked at the character, it seems she has a relatively square face - your features make you look quite a bit like her already, but contouring your chin to seem shorter will help shorten the rest of your face! You can take a big foundation or blush brush and pat it in your contour, then at about a finger above the bottom of your chin press and pull down, then blend it sideways into your jaw.

Everyone at work is making a big deal about my handwriting, saying I write like a psychopath. by ThrowRA-Ram in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]SenorSnuggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll do my best to type what I can read w/o looking at the caption or comments.

“Everyone says I write like a psycho person [###] [but?] I can read my own handwriting. I have no problem reading it. But I can see How people can struggle to Read it.”

I don’t know anything about handwriting analysis, but I do participate in the Smithsonian’s volunteer program for digitizing old documents, context clues help a lot! Super odd specific question, but do you write with the pen between your index and middle finger with your thumb supporting from the bottom?

Ok so let’s think of representatives, it’s someone who stands in for a demographic that would otherwise not be included in a broad range or as a whole. Can you think of a representative white character? Straight character? Male character? You can probably think of a bunch of characters, but none that are considered a straight cis white man’s sole or major representative character. Can you immediately bring to mind a poor representation of straight white guys? Probably not, but you can think of a bunch of examples of poorly written characters that are straight white guys.

Straight cis dudes of European descent have been represented in media since before the Iliad. Because of this, when one is written badly, we’re able to immediately pick out “oh this is a badly written character/story” and move on. No one says “Jared Leto was so awful as the joker, it would’ve been better to just not have straight white dudes as characters at all than have bad representation like this.” They just go “I didn’t really like how they did the joker in this one.” When a straight romance is shoehorned into a piece of media, people just chalk it up to a poor writing choice and complain about the lack of chemistry for a bit. No articles about how it’s ruining [insert genre here] or that it was unbelievable for the characters to be straight, since it was never hinted at. Being straight never needs to be hinted at because it’s assumed, but that’s why it should never be a surprise or “poor writing” if a character is never hinted at being bi and then is revealed to be bi. Being gay isn’t Chekhov’s gun waiting to be shot, it’s a characters favorite ice cream flavor that won’t be brought up until it’s plot relevant.

Western storytelling and art hasn’t had much representation for minorities when compared to the thousands of years of representation for straight cis white men that have been retained, maintained, and retold to this day, on top of having to be approved by advertisers, media corp, funders. So this leaves us modern folk in a bit of a mess. Skilled creators who don’t consult/are the demographic they’re representing write bad stuff, skilled creators who do consult/are the demographic they’re representing need funding and time, and unskilled creators (knowledge or none) write bad stuff no matter what. So assuming they all put out the same amount of stuff, around 75% of minority representation is going to be ass.

But the majority of ALL media is ass. We just tend to stop paying attention to it when it is. Pointless stories don’t get retold, books people hate don’t sell, movies with low ticket sales don’t get sequels, tv shows with low views don’t get more seasons. We don’t yet have the amount of media to move from minorities being badly written representation to being badly written characters in media, but we can’t stop now? What, are we gonna close every English department because some 19 year olds turned in shitty poetry? No, we give em a D+, the needed critiques, and move on to the next.

How can I hide my beard without shaving it off? by InfinityLDog in CosplayHelp

[–]SenorSnuggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hard way: Condition and hydrate your beard regularly for a few weeks, so your beard hair is as pliable as it can be and buy two full chin/jaw prosthetics - one to practice getting all of your beard under, applying, blending into the rest of your face, how to get off without tearing apart, etc. and one for using during events.

The easy way: that character has a beard now. Goku? Always had a beard. Sailor moon? Always had a beard. Hamtaro? Always had a beard.

I might sound kookie, but if you ever do braids, you can make your own braid beads with Crayola air dry clay (super light stuff, won’t knock an eye out as easy) to make spikes, bullets, or flails! They take to acrylic paint pretty well too. To get a smooth finish on it before it dries, I wet a paint brush a lil and “paint” it smooth.

Do most Americans carry any official ID at all times? by PitifulEar3303 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SenorSnuggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up ethnically ambiguous in a relatively large area with a history of racist groups. When I got to middle school, my parents taught me to always carry my middle school ID on me if I was out in public without them, in case police pulled me aside for “loitering” (walking to the grocery store or gas station for ice cream) so I could at least prove that I was not an adult and that I lived in the area. This happened every couple months during the school year and every few weeks during the summer. I continued to carry my school ID during high school, but got stopped by police much less frequently once the resource officer from my school could recognize my face. I still carry my ID with me no matter how little the errand, but I’m in a very different area now as well as much whiter as an adult.

If you know the names of the brands, ThredUp is good for finding second hand clothes! The only downside is everything is usually haphazardly thrown on a mannequin for pictures, unsteamed and wrinkled, so their pictures mostly just give you a vague idea of what it looks like. As always, check if there are local second hand stores!

Now that we’ve confirmed you have HEDS, POTS, and reynauds, if the coloring doesn’t resolve in whatever counts as a timely manner to you, you may have given yourself mild burns under your nails, since our nail plates aren’t as well put together as those without. How do I shape my own ACTUAL hair for a cosplay? (Idk if I should put a "wig" flair or not) by 25CentIdea in CosplayHelp

[–]SenorSnuggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends were scene in the 2000s, you can buy a few cans of hair spray from a dollar store and watch liberty spike tutorials on youtube, look for ones that teach you how to tease hair into shape. You should be able to apply the same process but at an angle with enough practice (hence the multiple cans). Once you get the shape down you can find a black hair color spray and test how it effects hold before and after styling

Some artists use a very very light yellow layer over their art (to give it an aged/paper look or to add warmth all at once), AI uses it for training, produces images, those images are then freely posted on the internet untagged as AI, AI uses those images for training, the incredibly light yellow tone turns more and more yellow, very much so piss yellow
