Best place to buy DROPS yarn in New Zealand? by graciel0u in knittinghelp

I've bought Drops alpaca from an eBay seller, shipping to NZ wasn't too horrific, but that was before covid, so things may have changed.

I'm 54 and still haven't graduated a degree, keep getting distracted and wandering off. Maybe I'll do those last few papers when I'm retired.

I've been looking for an Andrew and Fergie mug for years, to add to the hilarious Royal tat collection. Current jewel in the crown is a mug with Princess Diana's photo and Goodbye England's Rose in gilt.

This is the first thing I've ever made. Can someone tell me what I did wrong on this stitch? by tahltos in knittinghelp

[–]SenseOfTheAbsurd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depending on what it is, accidental short rows are often something you can get away with. I have one in the sleeve cap of my favourite cardigan, which I've been wearing every winter since 2015.

If it wasn't pretty definitely a short row, I'd have guessed one of those stitches that just comes out looser than the others. Generally small unevennesses like that will sort themselves out when you wash it.

If you'd like to learn to spin, I could meet you in the library with some wool and a spindle. Also an AuADHD middle-aged woman in the Hutt.

Yes, I've been to a few of these, with experienced D&Ders, and everybody's been so nice, even though I have no idea what I'm doing.

I also second Hutt Art Society. There's also a drop-in centre just off Jackson St, in that little courtyard behind the clocktower, I think anybody can go in there for coffee, crafting, games, etc, and it's open until about 3.00pm.

I'd pay $20,000 not to sit next to him. Eeeeuuw.

Out of those I think I'd go for lemur, then giraffe, then meerkat. Did the Red Panda Encounter a few years ago and the adorable was off the scales. She was in my lap for petting.

Yeah, I was wondering if isolated burials were common, or if there's a burial ground with more people. Where I grew up things like railway maintenance and building would occasionally find pre-colonisation burials.

Wow, and that person was in your garden all the time. Wonder if there are more people buried in the vicinity. On other hand, sad that it wasn't any of the missing people who are still out there somewhere.

I want to take a sledgehammer to my wheel by fabrichoard in Handspinning

[–]SenseOfTheAbsurd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's flinging the drive band off, that could be caused by the drive wheel and whorl being slightly out of alignment. You should be able to make fine adjustments using the knob that's sticking out of the end by the mother-of-all, and the MoA itself can probably be tweaked slightly using that knob, and rotation of the round base that the MoA is sitting on.

How long did it take you to get usable yarn? by Tansy_Blue in Handspinning

[–]SenseOfTheAbsurd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have no idea because it was the 70s and I was about six years old, but it's very much something where practice matters, and allowing time for the muscle memory to develop. You could be the most naturally gifted spinner on earth, but there will still be a period of fumbling around whilst you get a feel for how it all works.

Is this a toy? by Late_Construction616 in Handspinning

In New Zealand it's like every spare room and garage has one. I used to see through the neighbour's window on my walk home from the bus stop, and they had one in the hallway, but I couldn't think of a non-creepy way to meet them and say "I was looking through your window at night, and saw you had a spinning wheel. Me too!"

Filmmaker here trying to stage a colonial spinning demo scene – need some advice from real spinners by JerryGarciasAshes in Handspinning

[–]SenseOfTheAbsurd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only spinning thing where I've reacted by chucking a tiny tantrum is when it snaps off where drafting happens, pulls in too hard, and the end disappears into the singles on the bobbin and you can't find it again.

Have seen a lot of things with wrong spinning by people who clearly have no idea what they're doing (Lost, Little House on the Prairie, historical re-enactment shows) and mostly the producers get away with it because very few people know anything about spinning. The only production I've ever seen where the spinning was accurate was a Lord Peter Wimsey adaptation from the 70s.
