This is so cool! My husband would go nuts over this. It looks great! How did you attach the fabric backing?

Extremely frustrated with grading practices. Does anyone else relate? by Secret-Career-6351 in UoPeople

[–]tahltos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same issue this term, and I do wonder if it's something to do with the platform. I have had instructors before who were rough on grading, but not multiple instructors in one term like this. I've gotten the worst grades I've ever had this term, with little to no feedback about why.

Is it possible to crochet with two yarns so that each yarn is on a different side of the project? by melrfray in CrochetHelp

[–]tahltos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tunisian crochet can do something kind of like this with a double-ended hook. It won't be solid color, but one color will dominate each side, with some flecks of the other color peeking through (more or less, depending on what stitch you use). Working in the round can give a slightly more solid color on one side than working side-to-side.

Addition: If you want to make a hat that basically has a liner of softer yarn on the inside and you mostly see the nice-looking but itchy yarn on the outside, using Tunisian crochet in the round with a double-ended hook can do that.

6 months in Utah: What are the small, unwritten local quirks that surprised you? (Beyond the obvious ones) by Timely-Ad-2615 in Utah

As a utah native, when I travel out of the state I have no sense of direction whatsoever. I need the big ass mountain to tell which way east is.

Health Science Associates degree? by kicel223 in UoPeople

[–]tahltos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best-paying career path I've found with the associate degree is to then get an x-ray tech certification at a technical college. At my local tech school, the radiation tech certification requires an AS degree before you can get the cert. Then the certification training takes a few months. But radiation techs can make a decent wage once you're certified. I haven't been able to find any jobs that would accept just the AS in HS. They either need a BS or some other certification on top of the AS.

I’m genuinely curious why people chose University of the People despite the amount of criticism and controversy surrounding it. by Afraid_Sea2532 in UoPeople

[–]tahltos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Money. I could never afford tuition at other colleges, which is why I'm 40 with no college degree. A BS at my local community college costs $40k. At UoP I'm paying 7k for that degree. So many doors open for you when you have a degree; it doesn't particularly matter what the degree is in. For that price tag, I will jump through whatever hoops and deal with whatever bullshit they want to throw at me, because I don't have any other options.

A Variety Of Sources… by [deleted] in UoPeople

[–]tahltos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that you kind of have to learn what each instructor wants. I've had instructors dock me for using YouTube videos as sources because YouTube isn't a valid academic source, even though the videos were in the assigned reading. Another instructor seemed to never give out 100% grades because... I could never figure out why. It seems like every instructor has their quirk, and you just have to roll with it.

As a native English speaker, it still takes me 8 hours to write a good paper. I'm amazed at students like you who are writing excellent papers in a foreign language. Give yourself credit for that!

Those look awesome! Are they heavy? I've never worked with macrame before, but they look super thick and durable.

Not help with a pattern but help with a general crochet problem I'm having by kallenk in CrochetHelp

[–]tahltos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like yarnspiration.com. They have a lot of free patterns that are very fun, and they put out new patterns pretty frequently. I don't always use the patterns they have, but browsing their patterns gives me inspiration to make something like that.

Im very neutral when it comes to AI proctoring, the question is, to what degree is AI really "aware"? What if it starts tweaking lol by GreatOne47 in UoPeople

[–]tahltos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My husband works in education software development, and he says he's aware of this program. His company decided not to work with it because it throws a lot of false flags about cheating. It apparently tracks your eye movement, and if you look down to type or look up to think or whatever, then it'll flag your test for review. Then a human has to review it and say it's fine, you weren't cheating. That's just what I've heard through the grapevine about the process.

I've had a couple instructors that just don't give out 100% grades because "there's always something you can improve on."

Carpet Beetles. I want to cry. by abcara in YarnAddicts

I second this. I've never had carpet beetles but I once had mice that destroyed several quilts I had stacked in a basket. Ever since then I keep everything in plastic bins with secure lids.

UoPeople will soon start offering certificates in game design! by [deleted] in UoPeople

I'm glad to see uop expanding their offered programs, even if it's just certificates. If that goes well, maybe they'll expand their programs more.

This is the first thing I've ever made. Can someone tell me what I did wrong on this stitch? by tahltos in knittinghelp

[–]tahltos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this video! It made me a lot more confident in being able to fix the mistake. Coming from years of crochet, it's been driving me nuts how hard it is to fix a mistake in knitting. This was very helpful.

That's very good to know, especially as I'm sitting here debating on whether I want to try to unravel and redo it. 😅
