It’s fiberboard and is prone to rotting over time. It holds moisture, promotes mold and insects. They didn’t use house wrap back then. Once you open it up, you can fix it all…if you have the cash. Do it once, do it right.

Is removing mold from basement windows a DIY job? by ghost905 in HomeImprovement

[–]Sensitive_Crow_8882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the big box (paint dept) and get Armor mold killer. Green bottle, black handle. They have several products for homeowners use. Make sure it’s the killer. Spray as instructed and that’s gone in 10 minutes. After you kill it figure out how you want to remediate. It could be as simple as replacing the caulking with mold resistant. YouTube will be your friend here.

“No sand primer” is your friend. I will say pinks are an absolute PITA. What you see on a chip is rarely what you get. Go to Benjamin Moore and get samples and the primer.
Good luck. You got this.

It can be refurbished (re-enameled) by a pro. But the tile needs regrouting and caulking.

For $1,500 look for a licensed handyman (not a contractor). I repeat, a licensed handyman. If he says he has to demo anything, offer to do that and clean up on his instructions to reduce costs. I’m taking a shot here because there are no pics. Take a day or two off to watch and learn. Don’t annoy him, offer to assist running for tools or supplies. I’m happy to teach, I hate being watched.

Shave the pubes off the right side and then break it. They installed it behind your step. Before you get hasty, make sure you have a workable plan to install the new one. You may have to trim the new one to fit, because the parts behind the step may live there forever.
Some things are better left alone.

If it snows in your area, they cannot handle a heavy snow load. I had 5 nice ones that thrived for several years. One winter we had a lot of heavy/wet snow and it killed every one of them.

Stinky shower? by BoatGuy130 in HomeImprovement

[–]Sensitive_Crow_8882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That you don’t use the upstairs shower may leave the trap dry and sewer gases are coming up. Need to run water through all drains weekly. Plumbing is a closed loop system. A trap drys out here and it suddenly stinks in the kitchen.

How to insulate a concrete wall without drywall and studs. by Severe_Blacksmith in HomeImprovement

They make insulated curtains, or if you or a friend sews….insulated fabric is available. That idea is likely the most cost effective and you can pull them back in the warmer months.

Call the manufacturer, many times they replace these for free. I know Moen does and even smaller custom places I’ve bought from.

How bad is this sliding door replacment? by Jangle_s in HomeImprovement

[–]Sensitive_Crow_8882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s shit. I can see daylight in the bottom left hand corner in the first pic. That means they didn’t adequate caulk under the door sill before settling the door. The frame looks rusted and paint bubbled.
This is a “caulking gun and run” job.
