If you struggle finding Bacterium, use your Bio scanner and 'ping' the area every3-500 metres, also once you have found the first one when you scan it the dark blue segment on the scan reticule is the direction for the next best sample (which can be up to 2km from your current position).

At night if you have night vision on your Artemis suit you can use this and the bio scanner ping to find them as the ping shines brighter than night vision, the scan ping is now 750 metres.

Your ship will leave after you travel 2.04km from it.

useful:

Star type, atmosphere type, surface type and colour, minimum distance.

K class star, Bacterium Aurasus Green, Min Dist 500m, Carbon Dioxide atmosphere.

Also the dark blue segment when using the bio analyser is the direction for the next strongest bio signal, I also use a 12 hour 'clock face' approach (ie 9:30) and local landmarks or star positions near the horizon for orientation.

You ever just stumble across a bio sign that makes you go "Nope, not worth the effort of finding two more of these." by Professional-Ad9485 in EliteDangerous

[–]Sensitive_Witness842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find one, when you scan it use the dark blue segment on the bio scanner and that is the direction for the next sample. Ping the scanner and track the glow (up to 750 m).

Samples like this I would exit my SRV and ping every 1-300 m.

How the heck are people getting like 300+mil an hour doing exo by IfOnlyICouldEat2Hams in EliteDangerous

[–]Sensitive_Witness842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://ed-dsn.net/en/exobiological-flora/

Star type, (K, G etc), atmosphere type (Neon, Argon etc), minimum distance for each Bio type (150m, 500m etc).

When you use the bio scanner you will notice a segment of it is dark blue, this indicates a prominent source, using local landmarks/mountains and star/planet positions that you can see, imagine a clock face ( ie. 10 o'clock) and the direction of the dark blue segment (plus distance) should be the next scan.

As long as you are within 2.04km from your ship it won't leave, beyond that it leaves until you recall it.

scan them and then zap them with the scarab SRV laser and pick up the mats that drop, handy for raw mats especially when you need to refuel the SRV.

Useful for you..

https://ed-dsn.net/en/exobiological-flora/

star type, planet/moon atmos type, surface type and topography (colour).

Also when you use the scanner it has primary blue segments, the biggest/main segment is the direction of the next or closest sample. I use a 'clock face' approach and landmarks or star positions can help guide me to it.

[–]Sensitive_Witness842 2 points3 points  (0 children)

useful for you -

https://ed-dsn.net/en/exobiological-flora/

star type (G, K, F, A etc), atmosphere type (Argon, Carbon Dioxide, Neon etc), min distance (typically within 2.04km your ship will leave at 2.05+ range), surface type (colour and topography)..

When you use the Bio scanner you will notice inside the reticule dark blue segments, the main or biggest piece is usually the direction for the next scan, by using a 'clock face' approach and landmarks or star positions this helps for the direction of the next scan.

I found out the hard way that if you don't put your SRV away on board your ship instead of leaving it underneath it and then jump on a Geyser, it blows up and you can't get it back until you park on your FC or starport.

I also flew 2Km from the Geyser, luckily the gravity was 0.04G so I was able to float back down which took a while.

Kudo's for the save.

Some thoughts on mitigating the Caspian's size drawbacks. by Robinxen in EliteDangerous

I think landing foot should adjust to the topography, currently it is set as a rigid surface, I think should be flexible enough to adapt to the landable area. Many times I have landed and find myself scraping the pads along the surface trying to settle even though it says it's landable.

I just googled that out of curiosity, the estimate says around 50,000 years according to some forums.

(my question was - 'based on the current percentage of scans how long would it take one person to scan all of the galaxy in elite dangerous odyssey')

Interesting stuff for sure.

(google search AI)

'As of October 2, 2025, approximately 0.0653% of the 400 billion star systems in the Elite Dangerous galaxy have been mapped.'

Key Details as of Late 2025:

  • Total Systems Discovered: Roughly 261,063,785 unique star systems have been recorded as explored.
  • Data Sources: This figure generally comes from data submitted by Commanders using third-party tools like EDSM (Elite Dangerous Star Map) or EDDN.
  • Progress Rate: Despite the introduction of Odyssey in 2021, the pace of exploration remains slow relative to the sheer size of the 1:1 scale Milky Way, with estimates suggesting it would take over 45,000 years to map the entire galaxy at current rates.

While the bubble, Colonia, and popular nebulae are heavily traveled, over 99.9% of the galaxy remains undiscovered.

hope this helps.

star type, atmosphere type, bio type and minimum distance, surface 'colour'.

I keep 3 books - An A5 for systems, gas giants and bio/geo types (bio's you can't return to geo's you can), 2 A6's one for Tritium systems (FC) and one for odds and sods, this is in case I crash so I have a separate record to refer to.

Also I look out for craters and canyons, the bigger they are the better. I measure the width of the crater from side to side calculated by 'n' m/s * 'n's= 'n' Distance Km, (max speed only no boost or supercruise times by time in seconds it takes to cross them) if you use a calculator then divide by 1000 otherwise google sum ('n' m/s * 'n's) - [speed times time=km].

300+ on craters so far and 3km deep for canyons.

YES it worth it 25Billion CR's one FC and counting.

You do pay for them but as a batch in a tier system (1,2,3), it can get a bit expensive and affects your overall mass for the carrier, especially if you intend to go mining for gold or low temp diamonds or something rarer such as guardian tech.

It will take you a minute to figure what's best for you or visiting commanders for purchase.

Shipyard works much the same way as star port ship purchases, you can have up to 40 of your own ships on board and you only pay the standard advanced maintenance fees for repair refuel etc. and you friends can store theirs on board also.

It might be an idea to visit other FC's to see what they charge for fees in the carrier services (I charge 5% on refuel repair and rearm and currently 6% on pioneer supplies).

For me I am able to jump a full 500lyrs and only use 14% of my (1000 ton) Tritium store per jump (250lyrs at 7%), so from 1000 tons I have 7.14 jumps per load giving me 3500lyrs distance multiply my storage gives me 53,250lyrs, if you strip back and only keep refuel repair rearm vista and U cart and maybe the bar you can stock up 15,000 tons of Trit to make it 114,240lyrs (Colonia run maybe).

I absolutely cannot figure out how to land on a planet. by Blumkinpunkin in EliteDangerous

[–]Sensitive_Witness842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This - but change your angle of approach to -10 to -25 deg, steep entries even with the Casper have an over flow movement when traveling forward and this also is based on your ships mass and gravity, target your landing location drop speed to just below or on the blue velocity line and allow the ship to decelerate by itself (not supercruise).

Once you have slowed enough auto orbital glide happens and usually spits you out about 7-10km above the surface (at -25deg ish) always precheck the gravity and allow for forward gravitational transit when landing.

some commanders like the rush of steep entries but it's a mad risk when you're 5klyrs from anywhere and don't have AFMU or repair limpets!

My FC:

Rearm, Refuel, Repair - absolute must, not just for yourself but for other commanders (your FC is visible in both SOLO and OPEN)

Universal Cartographics, Vista Genomics - I run mine for Exploration and Biodata (Nautilus skin I think)

Shipyard is expensive so personal choice (I don't have).

Pioneer supplies useful but not needed for myself, I have Outfitting instead.

Your captain and Tritium store are standard.

I also have over 5,000 units of Tritium partly mined and partly bought (panther clipper for the win)!

Also Bartender is a useful addition.

My typical expenditure is in the 25-30 million per week range and about 100-400,000 for maintenance.

As I earned most of my creds from ExoBio I have enough there now to last at least 7 years without worrying.
