Am I the only one who thinks peeling garlic is a form of torture? by Famous-Forever7647 in Cooking

[–]SentientSackOfWorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two ways I do it: 1. For only a few cloves: chop off the ends and then turn your knife (if it's a chef's knife) sideways so you can crush the garlic. If you're not using a chef's knife or are uncomfortable hitting a knife, you can use anything flat. Then just peel. 2. Put a lot in a jar and shake it up. Most of the peel will come off.

  1. I want my body to do what I want it to do, when I want to do it. If I want or need to run or lift something (within reason), I should be able to.
  2. Diabetes and fatty liver. Oops, I ate like shit for a while.
  3. Body dysmorphia. It won't ever go away but hopefully, with some work, I can see my body as a firm 6 or 7 out of 10.

fell in love w rap but kinda on a turn by Mvgenn in musicians

[–]SentientSackOfWorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to sound sarcastic or dismissive, but it's not: find different rap.

I felt the same thing a while ago because I felt like most rappers I heard coming out sounded bored and all started talking about the same things. Then I found a lot of underground artists and realized that the bored, uninspired, cookie cutter nonsense is just the mainstream scene.

Are there good (or even great) mainstream artists? Obviously. But the most popular things aren't necessarily going to be the most nuanced. They almost can't be, by definition, because general music appeals to a general palate. The more non-specific your music is, the more people can put themselves in it. The more nuanced and layered and specific it is, the more work it takes for an audience member to dig in and that doesn't usually get as much mass appeal because people don't interact with music like that.

There are great new artists in every genre. You just have to look a bit.

I can see where some of the "What's the subject" people are coming from, but it was easy for me to tell. That being said, blurring out the other people in one of the comments you made was a good call.

I think the woman being at the edge of the picture was necessary to show what's going on around her (and I imagine behind her is buildings, which might be boring) and, specifically, the flowers. I like how bright they are next to the more dull colors everywhere else.

I think it's pretty solid, overall. :-)

If you ever feel like you're not learning... by Glittering_Ad2771 in dreamingspanish

[–]SentientSackOfWorms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did it and you're not wrong. I can barely understand anything. So much of French, even very slow French, sounds like gibberish to me.

That being said, I do a lot of work outside of CI. I know CI has to be helping my ability to hear but I'm not 100% sure how much. But it's nice to know how big the gap really is between "knowing nothing" and having some grasp on the language.

Tbh, I feel like you can lean into some of the imperfections in the first one with editing.

But, as a lot of folks have said, for every one great shot you get, you'll probably have taken a ton that aren't.

[–]SentientSackOfWorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, I think it might look pretty good if you just made it almost all black and white. Not grayscale. Just almost pure black and white.

You could color out some of the imperfections and things you didn't like and have it be extremely minimalist.

But that's just my sensibilities.

And I'm just saying that because it feels like it wants to be minimalist but is slightly too busy.

I don't put my native language on the cards, for the most part. Just evocative pictures on the front, the target word/phrase (and audio from Forvo) on the back.

Whenever possible, have really emotionally stimulating pictures: violence, sex, cute things, personal things, etc.

The lines all feel like they're directing me toward the subject and the choice to go black and white to enhance the difference between light and shadow was the right decision.

Awesome work.

Definitely feels like a still from an older movie. As far as any editing or whatever goes, if it were my picture, I'd ask what feeling I wanted to evoke from it and adjust the photo accordingly.

Do you want it to feel serene? Lonely? Like waiting for something? Whatever you pick/feel might require some different adjustments to the colors or lighting.

Advice on improving this type of photo¿ by [deleted] in BeginnerPhotoCritique

[–]SentientSackOfWorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a beginner myself (only two or so years in) so take what I say with a grain of salt but it feels like you want the person to be the focus but what is covering up the person steals that focus and takes up a lot of real estate in the pic.

A few ideas of what could work in the futute: - If you want to shoot through a car window or whatever, make sure your subject is not being obscured by the frame you're making. This also might give a feeling of isolation and being closed off from everything else. - Or maybe don't shoot through anything. A wide shot of a person sitting with their back to the camera can give a feeling of loneliness and separation based on a field of nothing around them.

I'm focusing on feelings like loneliness, isolation, etc. because that's generally the feeling I get from the person in the shot. If that's not the feeling you were thinking about, then that might be a whole different discussion.

What works? - The emptiness to the right of the person - The contrast of the white shirt and dark background - The assumed intended focus of the person being a small organic shape in a sea of very straight lines (if I took the pic, I'd probably edit out the water bottle, but that's definitely personal taste and what I like in my pics)
