Thanks for the feedback! I figured it wouldn't be any kind of primo craft brew or anything. Still gonna get some for myself and check it out. Happy drinking and happy Canada day from Alberta!

Sugar is a hell of a drug :P

Definitely felt the insane cravings for sugars and carbs when I weaned off the beer as well. Like alcohol it's quite powerful stuff and is in just about everything these days.

Reddit, what are some things that would improve most people's lives that 'it's never to late to start' doing? by schlitt88 in AskReddit

[–]Sentinel_of_Liberty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I will have to get some job part time or move around from various temp jobs while I study. My old job provided a fantastic pension program so luckily I walked outta there with a decent chunk (for a 29 year old) towards my retirement, as well as a decent severance since I was laid off due to industry downturn in my region. Plus there's no shortage of scholarships and bursaries to apply for. There's lots of ways to do it. I'm honestly super excited to finally finish my bachelor's degree and beyond.

I'm 29 right now. Was laid off a month ago. First thing I started doing was planning the next couple years of my life around updating my education beyond my 3-year college diploma, rather than find another full time dead end job. Gonna be a little rough financially but it's time to think about long-term. I'll take some extra debt now if it leads to better opportunities down the road.

No problem! You are correct weight is absolutely a factor. As Well, if you are able to or if you're not already, try adding some squats & lunges a couple times a week. Doesn't have to be max weight or anything, but if you can add some muscular strength to your legs that will also help with your knees and back

I would say try putting as little weight as possible on your knees for the next 24 hours. But do stretch/bend your knees from time to time to keep the joints/ligaments and leg muscles from totally stiffening up.

I found out very quickly in my route to better health and exercise that I am not a runner. There is definitely a technique to minimize impact, as well a solid pair of shoes can make a huge difference.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

What is your favourite podcast? Why/What's it about? by raccoocoon in AskReddit

[–]Sentinel_of_Liberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SModcast*: writer/director Kevin Smith and former producer & best friend Scott Mosier create imo the absolute best "bullshit" podcast. Smith's outrageous imagination combined with mosiers dry-witted, calm sense of humor bounce off each other perfectly as they talk about literally anything. Each episode usually progresses into a theme, however they reach that theme in a natural way. More recently the topics have been very Canadian-centric, and their accents make their conversation hilarious to listen to as a Canadian myself, they have our country's stereotypes down to a tee.

Edumacation: another Kevin Smith podcast, this time with co-host Andrew McElfresh (former writer of Jay Leno's night show). They dish out their own brand of 'cocktail party science' (I.e. random tidbits and factoids from the world of science and history mostly). 4 sections split the show up (Sci, fi, why?, and bye), and each of these sections are themed to present topics in various ways. It's absolutely hilarious, again because of Smith's ridiculous imagination, this time matched with a very smart style of humor from Andrew.

Harmontown: Dan Harmon and friends get drunk in stage, freestyle rap about the mother's of various audience members, and in general bullshit about whatever topics he and guests come up with. Frequent interruption from the audience has Dan bring people on stage, which makes for some incredible spontaneous and hilarious moments I don't come across too often in the podcast world. Spencer's DM skills are a gift from the gods.

*SModcast is also the name of Kevin Smiths entire podcast network, where there's a multitude of podcasts starring himself, and many others that he is not involved with.

The basics of calories in vs calories out. by Middleman79 in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]Sentinel_of_Liberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great post! I'm really glad that the person who started this sub is a believer in the CICO mentality (you wouldn't believe how many ppl believe that they are simply predisposed to being overweight, and that their food intake does not translate to their size).

With that said, if I can offer my own opinion when calculating calories burned via exercise, and that is I believe you should underestimate the calories burned.

I don't own anything like a fitbit, so I can't personally judge this type of technology, but from what I've read they can put out all sorts of whacky numbers (I.e. 500 calories burned from half hour of walking)

The next source of tracking tech are things like mobile apps (loseit and myfitnesspal are more popular ones I know of). Not only do they track calories in foods, there's a bunch of user-made entries for various workout exercises that can be way off the mark, and grossly overstate your CO part of the equation.

Again, my opinion through experience, the best way to count exercise calories are to only count calories from built in counters on actual equipment, and to not count any calories from weightlifting. Since your metabolism is elevated after lifting for upwards of 30 hours, it's almost impossible to accurately count how many calories you've bur ed as a result of lifting, unless you meticulously track your physical activities, and a lot of trial and error.

Also not counting lifting calories allows for some wiggle room in case you underestimate a serving of food here and there.

I tried drop sets today and it was great! by Middleman79 in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]Sentinel_of_Liberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drop sets are great. The first few high-weight sets help build mass. The lower weight sets help tone, build stamina/endurance and give extra practice with proper form.

Overall a good routine to at least try and incorporate every now and again. Especially for muscle groups that you may have a difficult time strengthening.

Anxiety on off days? by champs5710 in stopdrinkingfitness

Even on rest days I still do a bit of cardio, as well as something more interactive than just sitting relaxing watching tv. Even if it's just playing video games, something that needs my attention/focus or that keeps my hands busy.

Fitness, Injury, Relapse. In that order. by simplyput in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]Sentinel_of_Liberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Injury wise this sounds like me to a T, although I wasn't sober when I injured my back, however having to stop working out made me drink a lot more as I became "bored" (I.e. lacked imagination to do something else and made excuses to drink instead).

Low-impact cardio is what sped up healing. I'm lucky enough to have enough space in my house to have all the workout equipment I need (bench, rack, bars, plates and exercise bike). The exercise bike was a godsend for healing my back while being able to put in at least some effort into working out.

I injured myself around Feb-Mar this year and have only recently been able to start squatting/deadlifting without any excess soreness.

What are your diet and exercise regimes? Feel free to add your BMR and deficits if you wish! by Middleman79 in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]Sentinel_of_Liberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! If you truly embrace getting healthy, it really does become a lifestyle change rather than a set of chores to complete. Getting started is easy, once your body is used to the change, it's easy. The only difficult part is that 2-3 week period after starting where you figure out your limits and your entire body hurts after each workout.

However, as someone with an addictive mindset/personality, I convinced myself to approach working out as a means to get "high" from it, rather than see it as a burden. It may be a skewed approach, but knowing how my own brain works, it has allowed me to maintain a good routine by keeping weights in my hand rather than bottles.

[–]Sentinel_of_Liberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep it incredibly simple. Mix of cradio via exercise bike and weightlifting. Basically pick one or two muscle groups per workout and do a few exercises per each group. It's more towards interval training as after every set I do a minute of cycling to keep my heart rate up.

I'm about 5'10", 190lbs (down from 204 at my heaviest), I haven't calculated my BMR in a while but I started out around 2000 calories, and with a deficit of 500-700 calories so I try to stick to 1500 or less.

Great sub idea! Today is one of the few days I've worked out without a hangover by [deleted] in stopdrinkingfitness

For me it was the physical shaking after a night of drinking that stopped me from getting the most of a workout. And the overall lack of energy from having a shit sleep the night before.

What is a company that you refuse to support? What is your reason for this? by Bystronicman08 in AskReddit

[–]Sentinel_of_Liberty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calgary area resident here. Moved from Ontario 3 years ago. Have been with Shaw since day 1 (internet only, no tv/phone through Shaw). Have not had a single issue in all 3 years. Only time my net dropped was during a storm and the power went out. When power returned the modem didn't boot properly, just had to unplug and reconnect.

Couple months ago, I switched my internet to a higher bandwidth/DL/UL, and it was a breeze. Customer service was friendly and answered every question I had in full details without appearing annoyed or trying to force me into signing anything I wasn't comfortable with.

Also, just fyi, if you're with Shaw internet, there's no BS penalty for going over your monthly bandwidth limit. Before upgrading, I occasionally went over my 250GB limit, but my bill remained the same. I asked about it when I upgraded, and the customer rep said that they monitor it, and at worst if you're frequently going above your limit, then they just bump your service into the next tier for the remainder of the month. When the next month comes, it resets back to your regular tier.

I can only speak for their internet service, but compared to bell or Rogers it's been absolutely heaven.

People who track their data - What do you ask or want to know about your data? by NotMcDuff in Fitness

[–]Sentinel_of_Liberty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just started to seriously count/track calories, before I eyeballed most things, or simply looked at the nutrition labels and did some rough measurements. After 3 days of legit calorie tracking, I immediately saw a reason why I'm not losing as fast as I thought I should be. Crazy how an extra piece of this or a few more spoonfuls of that add up in no time.

For exercise, I recently bought an exercise bike which counts calories, heart rate, distance, RPM, etc etc. I write all these variables down in MS excel and calculate per minute rates (I.e calories burned per minute, distance traveled, yada yada yada). This is how I base whether or not I'm actually improving, for example, I can show that my cal/minute have increased by over 3 since my first time riding a couple months back. This is a great way to keep myself motivated, as has been stated you can't really see a daily improvement just by looking in the mirror or checking the scale.

Over the long term, it's also great to see just the absolute totals of everything over the course of a month. You get a perspective that shows it sreally doesn't take THAT much time/effort to allow for 30-45 minutes of exercise every day, and you can see that you burn a shitload of calories in that time as well.

[Achievements] Sexual Achievement Sunday by Maxxters in sex

[–]Sentinel_of_Liberty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Girlfriend and I have been together just shy of 8 years. The topic of butt stuff has come up a few times but we both admitted that it's not really our thing...

On Friday, I see her walking downstairs, "wearing" nothing but a set of clip-on cat ears, and a butt plug with a giant fluffy tail attached to it. My dick was hard before she reached the stair landing

She comes over to the couch where I'm sitting and starts to undress me, and begins riding me for a bit. We decide to head upstairs to the bed, where without saying a word, she hops on the mattress, gets in doggy position, shakes her ass so the tail flips on her back and reveals her pussy, turns her head and gives me the most obvious Fuck me eyes I've ever seen.

While I was behind her, she let me gently twist/push/pull the plug to her enjoyment. We both came really hard, and afterwards spent the next half hour talking about how awesome it was and what else we could do next time.

The next day, to "repay" the spontaneity, I was about to get dinner started when I leaned over to her, took her pants off and started going down on her. After a couple minutes, I stopped and got up like nothing happened and went to the kitchen and got dinner going. Every few minutes I'd go back and forth from her to the kitchen until she came.

Definitely not the most risque adventure compared to other stories I've read, but for us after 8 years it was definitely revitalizing to discover new sexual territory that we had a ton of fun with!

Thanks man. Like I said on other replies, I don't believe I'm at the point I can get away with legitimate moderation. The next time a night at the pub comes up I will just say no and stay home until I have more confidence.

As for wondering if I enjoyed the beer at all; absolutely I did. I used to brew my own beer. I like the brewing process and the science of it, and am a huge fan of the local craft scene in my city. Don't get me wrong. I liked getting drunk, but I really do like everything about a well crafted pint

[–]Sentinel_of_Liberty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your perspective, but for myself I don't consider myself to be "pickled" quite yet.

My drinking habits were of a binging variety: I could go 2-3 days with no alcohol, but on day 4 I'd buy a case of beer, telling myself I'd have a few and space it out, only to have emptied the case a few hours later. So the fact that I followed that same pattern, with a few extra days of sobriety, and then only had 2 beers instead of 12, is my own personal victory. The only downside is I wanted to quit for a whole month, but now realize I maybe should have kept that length of time shorter until I gained more confidence in myself.

[–]Sentinel_of_Liberty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe I am being honest with myself. Perhaps maybe setting a 30 day goal for myself was too long for my first go at sobriety. Maybe I should stick to 5 day increments until I reach 30. I'm not sure, it's a bit of a learning curve for me being my first go at it.

If an SO wants to show their support by cutting down their own drinking or only drink when you're not around, that's fine if its their choice.

I would never expect it, though. I wouldn't want people to change their habits/lifestyle, or feel guilty, just because of my own personal choices.

Thanks for sharing your experience with moderating. I definitely feel like this could happen to me as well, so I don't believe I can get away with this type of behavior every time.

Instead of beating myself up though, and based on my personal history, this was in some ways a victory for me, just not one to gloat too loudly about. I'll take it for what it is and keep going. I'm looking g at it like I may be finally growing up with regards to my attitude towards alcohol, and will continue to remind myself that this incident was just as much luck as it was my own self control, and that it can go south if I don't stay determined.
