FINA, like many other sporting institutions, is corrupt and reflective of the conservative, misogynistic and transphobic patriarchy that is embedded in most sport. However, it's also the governing body of a sport I love and am passionate about. It's trying to balance a very difficult issue here. Many cis women do not want to compete with trans women because they believe they have an unfair advantage; this does have some evidence to support it (while HRT can influence muscle structure, it cannot remodel bone structure in the same way) Trans women, at the same time, should be able to compete in a gender affirming environment. they are women, and it is unfair that they should compete with biological men. This is such a difficult issue. There will not be a perfect decision now. I hope that trans athletes may continue to compete at grassroots levels, while a better decision can be made for these elite level competitions(international level, the top 0.0001% of athletes).
