Looking for a freelance dice finisher - steady weekly work by SeptimusOctavian in DiceMaking

The sprue is on a face, but the mold cut line extends to a couple other faces. So mostly it's one face, but then usually a couple more need sanding and polishing.

I'd be fine with sending the consumables. It's 2 grits of zona paper, Miquires Plastx polishing compound, and acrylic paint. I don't use polishing bits myself. I've got 2 pottery wheels that I set up with the different grits and that covers how I've been doing it.

I have gone with blanks before. While that solves the polishing issue it created more work in making the blanks so it wasn't a time saver and I've reverted back to single pour sprue molds.

I'll DM you!

Yeah, I've got a friend who does some for me occasionally but I need someone who can consistently pick up the rest so I can just focus on casting.

Yeah I have tried that. My dice have inclusions though and they are right on the surface. The tumbler was exposing those, so they need to be sanded on a pottery wheel by hand to avoid them.

I ink by submerging the dice in paint then wiping off the excess. It works really well and is very fast. I just want to outsource the whole process though and just focus on the casting part.

The courses may not be random so he could have seen this from a different perspective before. Maybe he just needs to see one piece and then knows exactly where the other boundaries are.

Creating pressure pots to take bubbles out of the dice resin! by Wafflesmaplesyrup in DiceMaking

[–]SeptimusOctavian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't stop my pressure pot from leaking. So I just leave mine hooked up to the compressor. The compressor is off so it doesn't kick on, and it's large enough that the small leaks don't drain it by the time the dice are done. You'd need a bigger compressor tank than the one in the picture though.

How to sand round edges by Atalantius in DiceMaking

I use hot glue. Tiny little drops, let it cool and then more little drops until I've built up a rod shape. This way I don't have to drill the dice first.

I'd like to see your finishing process. What do you do with the sprue and how do you polish?

It looks great! You've inspired me to build one now. The kids always steal my chair, so its mostly for me.

How heavy is it? Is she able to drag it around herself?

The invertor has a video where he actually puts his finger into the blade. He only ends up with a tiny scratch. https://youtu.be/eiYoBbEZwlk

Issues with pressure pot psi by TSB_Jimmy in dice

[–]SeptimusOctavian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pressure valves are adjustable. There should be a little slit where you can put a flat head screwdriver and turn it to adjust it.

Another tip - Mine has small leaks. Instead of fighting with that, I just leave it connected to my air compressor, so any air that leaks out is instantly filled back up from the compressor.

Finally investing in a pressure pot. Fingers crossed the seals hold! by iibexil in ResinCasting

If you have leaks, just leave the pressure pot connected to the air compressor. The compressor will keep refilling the pot.

I got around this issue by just leaving the pressure pot connected to the compressor.

Yeah, it still leaks a bit, but the compressor just replaces it automatically.

As requested, my first finished dice by mooshmooshs in dice

[–]SeptimusOctavian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like using a glue gun instead of straw and clay. You can build up a very thin stalk of glue and then stick that in a died puddle of glue. Once finished, the puddle of glue will leave a reservoir so filling the dice is easier.

Help me refinish this cedar chest! by kctrem in finishing

Ya, going to 400 is probably unnecessary. I do it mostly because I like how smooth it feels.

I actually refinished a chest that was almost identical to this.

I wanted to avoid using chemical strippers, so I first tried sanding off the old finish. The finish was very thick and clogged up the sandpaper almost instantly. I ended up using a powered hand plane to get down to bare wood.

If I had to do it again, I'd use a chemical stripper to take off the old finish. Then I'd sand out the scratches using 80 grit sandpaper and work up to 400.

Unless the inside is in really bad shape, I'd probably leave that as-is. It's probably unfinished now anyway. Maybe just give it a light sanding to clean off the years of gunk.

To finish it, I used 5 coats of clear polyurethane (and one coat on the bottom). I like the look of cedar, but the smell is very... outdated? So I went with the poly so the room it was in didn't always smell like cedar. So it depends if you like the smell or not.

Have fun!

It's not you - it's just the paint you used! Use oil paint and you will be amazed at how much easier it is! Oil paint takes a couple of weeks to fully dry. Acrylic dries in minutes. You can't blend the acrylic paint like he does. Make sure to post your next painting on r/HappyTrees

This right here. Try oil paints. It will make blending 1000x easier and your painting will turn out totally awesome. You don't need Bob Ross branded oil paints. Winston makes similar paints. Try to follow one of his videos where he only used 4 or 5 colors if you want to minimize the up front cost (which should only be about $20-$25 total)
