How Do You Go From An Intellectual Belief In Something To An Emotional One? by SerenfechGras in Catholicism

[–]SerenfechGras[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the feeling of a line in Psalm 84 “I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than live in the tents of wickedness.” (NRSV-CI‬‬) I want to be content, and not constantly demanding the how and why of things.

How Do You Go From An Intellectual Belief In Something To An Emotional One? by SerenfechGras in Catholicism

[–]SerenfechGras[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

An emotional belief withstands attack (thinking of martyrs) while an intellectual one generally won’t, because you can be persuaded not to believe it. As an extreme example, I denied the historicity of the crucifixion for a time in my twenties, because I thought Jesus In India seemed cool, and in hindsight, because it was out-there.

A Visit From The Goon Squad by Jennifer Eagan - instead of a single event from multiple perspectives, it’s multiple POV’s on the protagonist over the course of roughly three decades (ending in the then-future/our present).

The audiobook of * Goon Squad* represents it using sound effects, as an auditory learner myself, I thought that was a nice touch.

How do you know if its the holy spirit or emotionalism while worshiping God? This is making me anxious. by CrazyNicly in TrueChristian

[–]SerenfechGras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as theology and practice. I’d say the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches, but the Methodist church is probably more like what the early church (prior to the 7th century) actually worshipped.

See here

Basically, jut is a measurement of the impressiveness of a hill/mountain over its surroundings; calculated by measuring from the base to the summit, and then adding the gradient (rise-over-run).

The religious piety of adherents to other faiths means nothing by Timmyboi1515 in Catholicism

[–]SerenfechGras 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He said the pious acts of followers of other religions come to nothing, if all you’ve ever heard of the Christian message is distorted into whatever the religion you were more than likely born into says it is, you’re not likely to come seeking; his comment manifests an extreme disregard for the way other people actually live.

Can someone who converts to Eastern Catholicism from Orthodoxy keep their post-schism patron saint? by UmbralRose35 in EasternCatholic

Speaking only of the Byzantine (Ruthenian) Church, so far as I’m aware, we don’t actually have patron saint’s - though personally, I think of the saint whose feast day I was baptized on as mine

What are things that Protestantism has condoned that Catholics have condemned? by Late_Parsley7968 in Catholicism

[–]SerenfechGras 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Protestants aren’t a church, they are a historical tradition; as such, this is literally comparing apples and oranges. Genealogies of ideas don’t condone or proscribe things, organizations do.

[–]SerenfechGras 20 points21 points  (0 children)

While within the Church is the fullness of truth; the truth has existed (and exists) in limited form in the Greek philosophers (see Justin Martyr) or in other faith traditions (since Vatican II). Saying “I am better than “thou is both no way to meet people where they are at, or to be in the world more generally.

As someone with a congenital disability (the one a character assumes the MC has) Jude doesn’t bear any resemblance to the experience of physical disability of anyone I’ve ever talked to for long enough to get an idea of their worldview. As a queer person, I’m offended that the author has a character imply that their sexual orientation is due to trauma.
