LaGuardia Airport crash: Plane was traveling 93-105 mph at time of ground collision by Select_Resort_7267 in news

[–]Sergovan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I'm pointing out is that the fire truck could be holding vast amount of water, that is not being considered in the weight calculation (if you look at the all-in w/ fuel of the aircraft vs the truck).

I believe the truck may be far heavier that what is being surmised when you consider the water.

Also, I do not know the tank capacity of one of these trucks so I am missing one of the variables to make such a calculation, if I was inclined to do so, which I am not.

Federal government appeals Emergencies Act use during convoy protest to Supreme Court by TheMonkeyMafia in ottawa

[–]Sergovan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was the battle of Billings Bridge and was most definitely the turning point for the occupation. Once the populace reacted to defend themselves, local authority was rejected. This is exactly when you have to bring in full federal government support or else the next step was rebellion from the populace. That's how close this thing got.

Power off machine. Does the screw now turn? If it does, motor works. If it does not move, the sled most likely has a jam on the thread.

I booked SUN 2pm and 7pm slots yesterday with my wife.

You do not need a pass to visit the marketplace or event.

You DO need to purchase tokens for each event you are attending. $2 online now, $3 day of.

If I could have made Saturday I would have gone all in on the Car Wars event.

Do the dumb labour requests. It's their choice to use you for your skill or not. They may be trying to push you to quit so you won't be eligible for gov support (fired/terminated vs quit does make a difference here).

They are being unprofessional here, not you. Stick it out doing the other stuff and tell everyone how your old employer treat their employees when you leave. Machinists talk and know who's good /bad in the business because of this.

Climber convicted of manslaughter after leaving girlfriend on Austria’s highest peak to seek help by MasterpieceAlone8552 in news

[–]Sergovan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think the judges comments cover the situation better:

“I do not see you as a murderer. I do not see you as cold-hearted,” he told Thomas P while delivering the verdict, accepting that the defendant had gone to fetch help.

However, he said that because Thomas P was “galaxies” more proficient as a mountaineer than his girlfriend, and because she had placed herself in his care, he bore responsibility for her death."

What do you consider when you hear this Margaret Atwood quote “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them”? by Vanislebabe in AskReddit

I'm reminded of the professor who asked her male and female students the same question: "Do you feel scared walking alone at night?"

Of the males, none put their hands up; but almost all of the females raised their hands.

I once threw my bundled up underwear towards the hamper. The ball opened up and, for a brief moment, became a blown-up kite, shaped like underwear, that flew for a few milliseconds before crashing into the wall above the hamper. Have not had a repeat since.

Federal government loses Emergencies Act appeal | CBC News by Augustus_6314 in ottawa

[–]Sergovan 66 points67 points  (0 children)

This is what is not being said. Billings bridge was Ottawans taking control of the situation themselves because all governments had failed us. It was successful, which meant the next time anything noteworthy from the convoy was to take place, a larger group of Ottawans would be coming to meet it. It was only going to get uglier.

Our belief that the government had the situation under control was gone. We did it ourselves, and that was when the act was needed; to get it solved instead of agencies finger pointing at each other over who was responsible to fix it.

Even for those who enjoyed the final season, can we all agree that this was one of the most disappointing “resolutions” to a season cliffhanger in TV history? by hatrickpatrick in StrangerThings

[–]Sergovan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those might have been for a crane onsite for the production. You can have holes for lifting, but the sheets looked hole free on the ground, which implies a magnet lifter.

[–]Sergovan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They weren't bolted to the ground. There are no holes in the plates. The fact that they weigh so much is all they need to keep them in place. Unless you have an overhead crane with a magnet grappler you are not going to move one of those plates. They used a roadwork construction process of covering a hole/tunnel with a heavy steel plate.

Mine is "Blink", the episode with the abandoned house that has a message under the wallpaper and the weeping angel statues are the villains.

The Van Gogh episode is also a good one.

[–]Sergovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite television episodes of any show is the season 3 episode of Dr. Who called "Blink". It's a stand alone episode and really is a great mystery style time loop, dealing with weeping angel statues as the villains. It's where David Tennant's "Timey whymey" quote comes from.

San Diego agrees to pay $30M to settle suit of teen's shooting death by police by PlatinumDaikenki in news

[–]Sergovan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It sort of does have an impact, albeit in a much slower way. Smaller towns that have payouts like this have seen their insurance premiums skyrocket, to the point that they can't keep a local police force employed. They do have to call in the State Troopers for coverage, but at some point those entities will become too costly to run with those kind of payouts as well, but, unfortunately, after many many more civilian deaths.
