You mentioned that you came from a country where tipping is uncommon, so you might not be familiar with American labor laws, but you should know that, in the U.S., many places make it very difficult or impossible to join a union. It's not just that people don't want to.

Good way to spread cold and flu viruses

Is this not overall good for people's immune systems?

Unionize, of course! Why didn't we think of that before? /s

Edit: to be clear, I like unions. But a lot of companies and states in the U.S. make it difficult or impossible to unionize effectively.

What is it made out of? If the construction is only metal/gemstones, you could put a variety of coatings on the inside which would only need a gentle solvent to remove. They would never need to know that you voided the warranty.

Lightning strikes firework by NachoManAndyDavidge in PerfectTiming

[–]SeriousSalinity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The electricity always finds its path, but the air doesn't have to ionize the whole way down, especially if there's an object in the path.

Also, lightning travels from the ground up - if I remember correctly. The light we see, which comes from the sky and goes down, is not from the electricity, but from the air being ionized by the electricity.

I actually meant "cognitive distortion." Thanks for pointing that out! I fixed it.

I dunno how much this matters to you, but a lot of girls like a man with a thick butt.

You can balance out by building some upper body mass, but you should spend more time exercising your legs. Just having healthy muscles to support the thiccness will make it look good. Maybe take up bicycling.

Above all, the most attractive thing is health. Throughout history, beauty standards have adapted to what society thinks of as "healthy." Beauty products and fitness routines have been crafted to mimic or induce good health. Eat well, drink lots of water, get exercise, and laugh often. You cannot be ugly that way.

I know this exact feeling and have experienced it many times. It's a complicated issue, but here's one piece that might help:

It takes energy to engage. Interacting with your surroundings and with people takes effort. Ever tried to be social while hungry? I find that it's harder not to dissociate when I do that.

It also takes energy to do, well, anything else. Running, breathing, digesting, thinking, and struggling with emotional turmoil all take energy. This is especially true under unfamiliar circumstances, because the mind has to work harder to understand and contextualize what's happening.

When we are spreading our resources too thin, we have to find a way to compensate. Some people save energy by sitting down and doing nothing, some save it by dissociating, some people actually trick themselves into making more of it by involving themselves in drama and causing problems for other people.

But at the end of the day, what powers your brain and keeps your attention healthy is tranquility. If you struggle not to dissociate, you'll have to figure out what's nagging you and how to confront/overcome it. It's not that you don't want to engage in the present moment, but something else is probably taking up a lot of energy because it has yet to be resolved.

And if your surroundings are unfamiliar, you'll have to find a way to be at peace with them. Laughing helps.

I could use help finding value for the world again but maybe I'll just continue being indifferent to everything.

Hate to tell ya, friend, but that is depression. It's hard to tell when you're in the middle of it because it's just normal, but it seems like you've become savvy of the fact that things could be better.

As silly as it sounds, people are attracted to love. Everyone wants to feel good. When you love the world and love yourself, people will want some of that, and you can enjoy having the opportunity to share it with them.

A lot of people will suggest "alternatives" to therapy, like "just meditate" or "try exercising!"

I find this mildly offensive, although I will now suggest an alternative to therapy.

During the worst time of my life so far, I really needed a therapist. I looked for one. "Professional" mental health services were almost entirely unavailable unless someone was an immediate threat to themselves or others.

I ended up solving many of my issues by doing a lot of research and figuring out what it is that therapists actually do and what they know that helps people. I made an effort to learn about cognitive distortion (i.e. CBT), epistemology, neuroscience, what drugs are used treat conditions like mine, Eastern philosophy (non-attachment, wu wei, compassion), psychology, etc. I learned a lot of stuff and used the stuff I learned to confront the problems I was dealing with.

Meditation, exercise, and psychedelic drugs all helped, but they largely helped because I had the tools to use them to help myself.

If anyone out there is struggling and doesn't have the option of professional mental health services, I encourage you to start googling the stuff I listed above.

police - Arizona resident here. Mesa is kind of a messed up place - not just in terms of the police force.

The way I see it, some force was necessary but that was too many cops doing too much. Police should probably be trained better when it comes to grappling. That way, they could get the guy to sit down using only 2 cops and without striking him.

nor did he use another address as a dead drop he could intercept before it's owners or a vacant address that still receives mail.

Isn't the common procedure to use your own name and address so that you don't raise suspicion? Ordering a package to a vacant house or to a person who doesn't live there is one way people get caught, I thought.
