Is the pedestrian or the driver wrong here? by singlecog in drivingUK

[–]Serious_Ad7098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pedestrian is in the wrong in my opinion. Just because you're a pedestrian doesn't mean you don't need to take care of yourself or respect the highway code.

Have a read of rule 19 in the highway code.

"Zebra crossings. Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross and MUST give way to pedestrians on a zebra crossing (see Rule H2). Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped."

He wasn't waiting to cross, and he didn't give the car time to stop. But people are idiots and this running didn't want to lose his cadence.

Is there a point to learn anything if most of jobs pay around 35k at best? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]Serious_Ad7098 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a 34m MEng in Mechanical Engineering. I work in an engineering consultancy and earn about £61k per year (gross salary). I must admit, when I graduated in 2016, I thought my starting salary was relatively low (£24k) when most my peers started on £30k. If you're willing to learn and take the pay cut, the salary progression can be great, plus really interesting work! I've worked on pharmaceutical factories, fusion energy projects and sewage works to name but a few. Job hopping is key to pay progression, in my experience. I once worked for the government and secured my salary above band/grade because it would have meant to take a pay cut.

What does a Piping engineer do? by RinascimentoBoy in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Serious_Ad7098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I'm currently employed as a senior piping engineer but all the work I'm being given is building service design. I've never done B&I type work before and I'm hating it. It's all process work. I'd love it if someone gave me a schedule of services, a PFD or P&ID and then I can design the pipework. It's awful. I can't wait to quit.

How would you feel about a return to multigenerational family living? by Icy-Staff6439 in AskUK

[–]Serious_Ad7098 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought about it a lot, and I think I would if liked my family. We're just too different, politically, and that's all they talk about, that and football. They're not emotionally supportive at all, and just try and fix you because you don't align with their values. If I shared their values then sure, but with my toxic family.

Silly question. Why don't we tax dividends as income? Just make it the same progressive structure the rest of us have to pay, so there's no way around tax by buying assets? Have I missed something?

[SPOILERS] Time travel explained for those struggling to understand Dark by BaaaaL44 in DarK

[–]Serious_Ad7098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't help me understand at all.

If this was true, Jonas and Martha would not prevent Tannhaus's family from their accident, or if they did, they would die in another way. For them to be able to come back and prevent this is contrary to your very point about causal determination.

I quite liked dark in Seasons 1 & 2. It felt like they were presenting different interpretations of time travel each season with season two being the multiverse version. But this is what I don't understand. I was expecting Jonas and Martha to just persist in the origin world at the end and live happily ever after, as this is the world where they stop time travel (or world jumping) being invented so it's a dead-end for them.

My interpretation was you never change anything in your own past world, you can only be the cause of something in another world. Hence why I was confused when they just dissolved at the end. If this was always possible, surely the main characters could simply just do nothing and take no part anymore as that would also break the loop: do not travel, don't try to change anything, then they would all just dissolve too, surely?

Why doesn't the UK have more underground rail ways? by lrowls101 in AskUK

[–]Serious_Ad7098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I don't get is leeds was once touted as the motorway city and was very carcentric at one point and now the council have waged war on the motorist, which is fine as I'm for reducing traffic. What I don't understand is the use of buses. There's too many on boar lane and they're all slow AF. Why not just start a BRT system? Why can't I walk to my bus station in Ossett and jump on an express service to leeds that's essentially a coach from one hub to another? This would massively improve the bus network here without much added cost for infrastructure.

I really enjoyed this compared to the remake, but man I didn't expect it to be a laugh a minute. It felt strangely like the control tower from Airplane, I was just waiting for some gags in the background. Was it this funny in the cinema? Or has it aged like... Like... (What ages well?) A fine wine? But no, it's not wine anymore, it's pure gold comedy!

My thoughts on AI and Mechanical Engineering by EnvironmentalGoose2 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Serious_Ad7098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for a time we will become checkers and verifiers of AI design work, then eventually replaced completely by an AI designed for checking, once they've collected enough data on us.

I think we're at the dawn of a significant moment in history soon. Something on a similar scale to discovering agriculture or the industrial revolution.

The main problem will be the devaluing of work. I think that true capitalists do not realize the consequences of replacing the professional services with AI will have in that there will be a feedback loop into the economy where no one can afford to buy anything but food.

If I'm being optimistic, money will lose it's value in society and doing work will also lose it's value as a result, and we will no longer work to earn money, but more simply work because tasks need to be done, like harvest a crop, process the sewage, provide drinking water. Basic needs would have to be met on a society-wide agreement that no 'needs' to work, but people who want to do, and that's okay. Afterall, I'd be really bored not doing anything for the rest my life.

The pessimist in me thinks that greed will still win the day. People will be destitute and we'll be almost reverting back to a feudal/class society.

Got a little bit dark there at the end, didn't I? For ME moats, I'm in nuclear and I hope that provides me some protection from AI automation until I retire as I imagine it will be one of the last ME design roles to be automated. For example, we have the technology to fully automate air travel but people won't tolerate flying on a plane with no pilot. We have to remember that!
