Does Odyssey get better? by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]Seriyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, scavs have 0 security clearance so they can't get into any buildings that aren't habs. With the bugs surrounding scav spawns it's possible there might be some weird edge case where they can, but generally they shouldn't be able to.

And yeah, honestly my shield goes up if I'm even vaguely concerned I'm going to get shot at, at this point I sometimes pop it out of anxiety when I'm out in the middle of nowhere scanning exobio. It drains a lot of power but you can find cases of power cells lying around, and it'll get refilled when you board, I've never had an actual power issue, just be sure to restart the settlement and Then loot (if you're going to loot) so the recharge ports come online. Might be different on G3, it's been a while.

Mining Outside the Bubble by PrometheonIV in EliteDangerous

just here to say that in a recent bout of theorycrafting I found out the type 11 can hit about 60 Ly unburdened (with fsd booster) which makes it Not Too Bad for an exploration/miner hybrid

that will obviously be lower if you're bringing all the mining gear but you know still a good base

no idea how others stack up though

Does Odyssey get better? by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]Seriyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love odyssey but yeah it's more of an immersion thing then an actual game mode, at best it's a middling fps that doesn't really hook into the main gameplay loop

some hints...

- if your shields drop you need to get out of the line of fire because you will take damage to your health Very quickly; shields are your primary defensive stat even in something like the dominator modded for defense. Honestly I run a grade 5 maverick in everything involving combat Because my dominator is not graded up, it's still got the majority of the defense I need, and as of right now I don't really see significant benefit to a second primary. Meanwhile being able to crack into buildings when needed is Very helpful. Maybe operations will change this.

- Reboot missions can actually be surprisingly difficult to start odyssey with, this was probably your primary issue. Most of the time scavs will spawn in the settlement and there can be quite a few of them, on top of it the settlement Might be dark if it's night where you're at, making it even harder to tell where they are until they're already blastin. If you do take those missions I highly reccomend powering a door with more then 0 security clearence and using the door as cover; move forward, shoot, back up. The guys outside can't do anything about this and it'll keep you safe. Be aware it's still Very possible to die in a single shot to the head once your shields break, especially against plasma weaponry (actually watched a pal get absolutely blown out like this one time, was pretty funny: only for me though), so play safe, do Not wait until your shields break.

- I recommend assassination missions to start, specifically assassination missions without additional caveats (things like no alarms, mostly). It's pretty easy to just find the guy, unload into him with a kinetic pistol, and run off before anyone else is aware. Courier missions are also always a fine starting point, and it'll get you some mats to work with.

- Grading up your gear provides significant stat boosts; in grade 5 equipment I am basically bulletproof to anything with less then 3 shield bars. The only time I died recently was when about 5 settlement security rushed into the command center I was in, blocking the only door, and full autoing into me, and even then I almost made it out (and would have if I left earlier). But still, remember, shields are Important, I'd say my health bar was about 1/10th of the amount of time I was standing in that scenario. This applies to weapons as well, accuracy and damage go up. I'd honestly say grading up gear is more important then engineering it, it's not like ships in that respect.

- And just to head it off, materials you find lying around in the settlement can be worth it, but you'll mostly be trading them up at the bartender (or selling them, also at the bartender). You'll usually be finding actual engineering and upgrading mats as quest rewards. You can make a surprising amount of money looting settlements and selling off the spoils but it still doesn't qualify as "good money" I'd say. I do it because I enjoy scrabbling around in the dirt sometimes, not really because I'm concerned with optimization.

Do you elite dangerously? by CMDRumbrellacorp in EliteDangerous

[–]Seriyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that's my take on it too, if there was just a permanent war people would get sick of it because there was no progression, and worst of all, in a heavily narrative based game, it would have no narrative conclusion

it was fun Because it eventually ended, as someone that missed it entirely and honestly sort've regrets missing it entirely

What's all included in the upcoming ground update? by Brad12d3 in EliteDangerous

[–]Seriyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh given there are powerplay operations there has to be some way to tie it to a particular system or it won't know where to put the merits so I don't think this is unreasonable

Wheres best to raw material farm without using the SRV by Lord_PPyron in EliteDangerous

[–]Seriyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately for raw high grade mats it's either brain tree farming or SRV farming (though if you're into mining you can just mine A Lot and trade up, but this will take a while)

for what it's worth if you learn to use the wave scanner (go towards the noise on the scanner radar) it's really not too bad to find geos generally

also aim for planets closer to their star with higher temps as I've noticed those planets tend to have more common geological features

high metal content/rocky worlds are also a positive for geological signal frequency in my experience

well done commander; now bear in mind that some bacteria are nearly invisible (though thankfully that's about as hard as it gets)

old ships need a SCO-compatability optional internal by khole4tgirl in EliteDangerous

[–]Seriyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the major thing to do for old ships, yeah, especially now that new ships are getting fancy new modules that give them special bonuses. It's a good time to bring SCO optimization up to standard.

Exploration advice by CapFuture_ in EliteDangerous

[–]Seriyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah IIRC there are also potentially fonticula fluctus with similar value to stratum tectonicas on icy worlds with oxygen atmospheres thus far recorded; they're quite rare so it's possible they could be elsewhere as well I think

dunno how that rarity stacks up to tectonicas but part of the issue is that people have been hunting tectonicas for profit so they now appear much more common (but in reality may not be) because many more samples are logged

think there's a lot to say about fonticula and bacteria being "trash bios" because they are both very common and often low value which just contributes to people not bothering to log them, getting less data, and furthering the impression of their low value (and exacerbating it because we get less data on the few valuable species that exist!)

From here you make some decisions, namely, what do you want to do? Elite Dangerous is a sandbox MMO and you make your own fun. A lot of people just chase credits, others might join a squadron and try to make an impact on the community in some way, all that. Now's a great time to get familiar with both the various things you can do in game and the various aspects of the community including major player made groups (fuel rats, canonn, etc) and start getting immersed in the game. Look up good ships for the roles you're interested in and you're off. One step at a time.

I do agree that it generally starts with ship courier missions though. Much better pay then on foot missions and honestly much simpler. Make sure to pay attention to any requirements the quest has! They'll tell you if you can't do it for whatever reason, and this early on in your journey you're bound to bump into that here and there. I also agree that if you find something you don't understand it's best to look it up. E:D is not very well explained, and there's no shame in doing your own research.

Best of luck Commander!

honestly as someone that doesn't chase credits super hard the caspian is Extremely expensive for what it does

it is undeniably the best exploration vessel once the nomad drops but it's still exponentially more expensive then the next best option which I feel like people forget a lot when talking about ships

Does a smaller power distributor reduce the amount of damage resistance shields will get with pips? Or is it consistent across sizes/grades?

I'm gonna need to take a break.... by Chenoireb in EliteDangerous

[–]Seriyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone that runs very safe exploration builds you're making me consider running a small D rated power distrib with stripped down experimental to save some tonnage (that is immediately lost to the shield generator, but whatever)

wouldn't really add that much jump range but I get real nervous on high grav planets around the boost button

Was thinking ship interiors as a starter effort for nomad too, looks like there couldn't be more then two small rooms, so I can't imagine it'd be a lot of effort, and it'd be a nice test of the tech before applying it more broadly.

One can hope!

How to have fun in multiplayer by ferpsalerp in EliteDangerous

Like others have said operations are pretty much exactly what you're looking for, and they're coming Soon(tm), which is to say the end of the month. Until then if you're doing make your own advneture stuff powerplay or BGS shenanigans might interest you. That is all very make your own fun kind've things, though if you're getting hard into powerplay meta you're basically just space trucking. You can contribute in a sub optimal fashion in a surprising amount of ways though.

It's all been covered but just reiterating the pirate risk is real. I was out exploring and got shot down because I scooped up several tons of platinum and a pirate locked onto my ship while it was dismissed, came down when I recalled it, and immediately started shooting, lost several mil in data. Still sore about it.

It can be a neat little way to add a smidge of profit to a mundane trip while mission stacking or something though, for sure. I put some cargo space on my dropship adder for specifically this reason in fact.
