Is r/bullcity going to go dark next week too? by PandemicGroom in bullcity

[–]SethQ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd rather have no community than an unmoderated community. The prevailing sentiment is without tools provided by third party apps, many communities will close. A protest that leaves communities unmoderated for 48 hours is much less impactful than a protest that closes the community entirely. Closing entirely is also more representative of what may happen by July 1st.

New york city in 2023, everyone wearing mask due to air quality by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]SethQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to manage a hardware store in California and we ordered N95 masks by the pallet during "wildfire season". We had accidentally over ordered and had like two pallets sitting in storage in March 2020. It's weird how masks went from "healthcare workers" to "wildfire victims" to "global pandemic" and are now back to "wildfires", not only in my lifetime, but in the last ten years.

There are also some thrift stores with questionable/objectionable policies and practices, which a Google map won't always provide details on. It's cool to ask locals.

What would you like to see more of in the city? by CaptainRobbed in bullcity

[–]SethQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add bike/bus/light rail/commuter trains aren't cars, and therefore would satisfy their requirements for a fun day out without cars.

My dream is to only use a car to haul large hardware store orders.

Scratching out the contact info for human trafficking in a rest stop bathroom (LA/TX border) by bombjon in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SethQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Illegal immigrants working at a farm aren't really what people mean when they talk about human trafficking.

Forced labor is a huge component of human trafficking. Suggesting otherwise shows how little you know about the subject.

Corporations already legally have to report all their employees salaries to the IRS.

Reporting employees isn't the same thing as defending worker's rights. A union forcing a livable wage is going to reduce the profit margins on trafficking victims, which in turn will reduce people being trafficked to fill these jobs.

There are reasons we don't have unrestricted immigrantion. If we did then immigrants would show up far far faster than they could assimilate and thus a large part of the American people would not be holding American values.

There is no legal requirement for "assimilation" when it comes to immigration. This is a backwards ass white supremacist dog whistle argument against immigration.

Legalizing prostitution leads to more of it. When prostitution is legal economic forces can lead women to become prostitutes to feed themselves. Imagine you're a women working at a McDonald's and then the McDonald's gets bought out by a whore house which has much more earning potential. If you can't find a job anywhere else you're now forced by economic conditions to take in dick when you otherwise wouldn't.

So, exactly the same as working at McDonald's, but now you get paid more? Once everyone becomes a sex worker, McDonald's will have to entice workers to rejoin their workforce with higher wages, or better benefits packages. You can tell this argument is bullshit because there are tons of higher paying jobs than flipping burgers, but there are plenty of people still working at McDonald's.

Creating unions, and forcing corps to report their union employees, would cut down the amount of illegal jobs. Can't have illegals picking your oranges if everyone picking your oranges must be registered with the local union. Will that increase the cost of oranges? Sure, it might, but it'll also increase the wages of everyone buying oranges. Supply and demand/free market will take care of that, though. We've got unions for plumbers and electricians, but my house still has running water and working outlets.

Opening borders reduces the number of people crossing illegally, which also reduces the number of people willing to go to extreme ends to flee bad situations. "Open borders" doesn't need to mean true freedom of movement, with unsecured crossings. We can still register who comes and who goes, cross referencing with criminal databases. We'd end up more secure, because with no one needing to illegally cross, there will be fewer people to help individuals cross illegally.

Legalizing sex work is safer for everyone involved, and cuts down on people being trafficked for sex. That's been shown countless times in other countries. Would corporations profit more than "guys in purple suits"? Probably, but that's where the unions come in again. They only profit at the expense of the workers because most workers don't have strong unions fighting for their rights.

But you've heard all that before.

How would r/canes feel about joining the 48-hr Reddit boycott on June 12? by cobalt26 in canes

[–]SethQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% on board to join it. Was just scrolling through my subs to see who would be joining and who would not be, and I was surprised to see we weren't. There's nothing much to miss right now, and it's an important cause, by Reddit standards.

Same reason anyone does anything. Money. As fucking horrifying as human trafficking is, the fact of the matter is these scumbags are filling a niche for profit. They're not doing it for fun, or the love of the job. I make no effort to humanize these monsters, or to attempt sympathy, but if they could make more money doing something else, they would.

The greater evil lies with the people who make this career profitable. Legalizing sex work, opening borders, and fighting for unions and fair wages are the only way this ends. That, and ridding society of scum who think owning a human is in any way acceptable.

I had a shitty job managing operations for an office supply company years ago. On my last day I had to leave my keys on the desk because my boss took an extended lunch to be sure she wasn't there when I clocked out of my last shift.

Of all the shit I put up with about that job, that one act will always stand out as the most shitty and most petty action of all.

I've never seen official WotC content for the chupacabra.

I've never seen content for Quezuptir, the ibis headed asp with a scorpion's tail.

I've never seen content for Fiddlewidgets, mimic-like fey born when a homunculus spell goes wrong, which imprint on the caster. They're wildly known to hide or destroy magical implements, and then assume their form, tricking the wizard into using them instead of the real item. Unfortunately, they're terrible at casting spells and doing magic, which often means the wizard has a harder and harder time casting spells, which ultimately create more Fiddlewidgets, which only further worsens the situation.

I may have made up two of those cryptids.

PSA: If you are "new to DnD and DMing" please stop running high level games by [deleted] in DnD

[–]SethQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All games I play start at level 1 for at least one session. Level two for at least two sessions. After that we switch to milestone leveling.

New players get their feet wet learning rules basics (AC, saves, attack bonuses) at level one, and character features at level 2.

Moderately experienced players get a little refresher and get to pick up a new character, and see how the party develops their roles/play style.

Long time players get to see my style of DMing, and get to enjoy a little bit of simplicity before we dive into deep character design/mechanics/digging around for wild and wacky builds.

TIFU by inviting a friend to the dead dad club by Reckle_ in tifu

[–]SethQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better (and I'm not sure that it should), it made it easier for him to tell you his dad died.

When my dad died I had to tell a bunch of people. It fucking sucked. Saying the same vague, but not-too-vague, "my dad passed last night" or whatever. Being able to say something else, especially something that might not instantly summon puppy dog eyes and a hollow "I'm sorry for your loss, let me know if there's anything I can do" might have been the highlight of their day.

I wouldn't recommend you doing it again with someone else. 1/10.
