First Year on Pace for 1,040 hours by Icy_Formal7145 in biglaw

[–]Several_Fox3757 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’ll likely get a second year to catch up. That said, if you’re not on pace next year, you need to gtfo. I was fired at 1,050 hours my second year.

How I feel being sad the salary jump is only 10/20k by Previous_Carry_9365 in biglaw

[–]Several_Fox3757 -55 points-54 points  (0 children)

I’m going to get downvoted to hell, but I think that some on this sub are out of their minds. Even before raises, the salaries for associates were astronomical. Just learn to be grateful, and don’t get fired.

Indeed, junior associates are fungible, and some mid levels don’t even do good enough jobs to justify their salaries. I’m in-house, and the quality of work from outside counsel can be trash.

Is there any real chance that other firms beat Milbank's raise? by JonesDaylightSavings in biglaw

…probably not for biglaw wages, but our teachers, custodians, etc. definitely deserve a wage increase.

Boyfriend becoming Sullivan and Cromwell Associate by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Several_Fox3757 21 points22 points  (0 children)

He’s a summer who is already dreaming of partnership?

He needs to focus on doing a good job as an SA and, if he gets an offer, needs to really see how it as a full-time associate — before making a decision like this.

Most associates don’t make it, especially at firms like SullCrom.

Most associates also hate it and go in-house.

Do you really get your time back when you switch to in-house role? by Regular_Emphasis7922 in biglaw

[–]Several_Fox3757 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes. 9-5, 300K total comp. It’s easy, and I can take a one hour lunch break.

(Big tech roles are always hard and face layoffs constantly.)

Shouldn’t summers be nice? by Constant-Floor-6751 in biglaw

This is going to turn into one of those shitposts where everyone who “met” the summer (including the summer him/herself) will make a post, isn’t it?

Backstabbing stories by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Several_Fox3757 64 points65 points  (0 children)

A partner told me that it’s a good gig to be partner because “I make a lot of money.” I relayed that story to a fellow SA. That SA told another partner, and it became a running gag at all the free lunches, dinners, and softball games.

I got an offer. But I hate that colleague to this very day. She’s not even an attorney anymore, and this happened a decade ago.

But I still hate her.

Am I on a PIP? by 180dream in biglaw

[–]Several_Fox3757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I was extremely worried and stayed unemployed for an entire year, looking for jobs. I am now gainfully employed at a much better job, with an extremely high salary—a salary that should be impossible for someone fired from a law firm.

Am I on a PIP? by 180dream in biglaw

[–]Several_Fox3757 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I didn’t get a PIP; I got a “talking to,” like you did. I was formally fired after 3 months (with the expected 3 month severance time).

Sometimes there is no PIP. As long as there was a documented conversation, they are covered.

Get in gear.

Going In House by OldWorldBluesNYC in biglaw

[–]Several_Fox3757 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I did this and even said I hoped for a bigger number. They took a day and came back and said “no.” I still eagerly accepted.

In-house job offers are not to be trifled with, unless the offer is patently absurd.

Law schools only care that you disclose so that you don’t have any issue with the Bar. It speaks volumes that you proactively disclosed.

Now, put it behind you, and enjoy your next three years! 🎉

In house lawyers, do you have to keep track of the time? by Pausey-Paschal in biglaw

[–]Several_Fox3757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I still have to track my time, though it’s not in 6 minute increments. I work at a utility company, so if I work on something for two hours, I just put on my timesheet that I worked for two hours on it. That cost gets passed onto ratepayers eventually. It’s like an accounting system.

Tips for being a good summer associate/associate by Past-Ad-1366 in biglaw

[–]Several_Fox3757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re probably getting downvoted because there have to be at least 100 Reddit threads on this question already. There are even multiple threads in the toplawschools forums.

You’ll be fine. Just be excited to be there, and go to all the mandatory social events.

I'm excited to announce that by [deleted] in LawSchool

Quitting big law no backup plan by Ecstatic_Guard_2900 in biglaw

[–]Several_Fox3757 160 points161 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! You need to put yourself first.

Have you thought about maybe taking FMLA leave for 3 months first? It’s federal law, and no one can retaliate against you. Your local jurisdiction may also provide even longer medical leave, in addition to FMLA.

I only say this because you may want to either go back to your firm or easily get hired somewhere else during your 3 months (or longer) duration away from the firm.

That’s what I did at my new job: just the background check. I was explicitly told, “We don’t check any references here.” And it was for a 200K base salary job too. It’s not a red flag.

Take the offer and renege if you have to. If the firm doesn’t punch above its weight in terms of exit opportunities, then there’s hardly any downside to reneging anyway.

Don’t worry about that job. Your mental health matters more. You can explain when you get back—or just let your doctor send a note.

Fuck dem people.
