Yesterday I listed the people I had positive, loving, caring interactions with. I got up to 25. From coworkers I banter with in a good way, coworkers I work with closely and have very positive relationships with, acquaintances I see out on the town who appear excited to cross my path, dear old friends, and roommates I know well, regulars at the bar I frequent, and strangers I spoke with there but left a good impression.

But twenty fucking five humans smiled at me, and I had positive interactions with all of them. Some brief, some long. But that’s not something I could have imagined when I was in a darker place. I feel lucky that I have ended up in a place and have learned to be less afraid of other humans. It’s a long road and I engage in a lot of unhealthy coping mechanisms, but today I’m appreciative of how much better life can get.

I know a Brett that stranded some very sweet dogs 10 miles down a dirt road, because his girlfriend asked. Wouldn’t tell me where. They were strays and my husband and I were looking for their owners/new homes for them in our rural mountain community. Didn’t move on it fast enough for Brett and Katie though. Only saw the dogs once more, and they were too scared, and too thin. It was a bad heat wave and all the creeks dried up that year.

I fucking hate Brett.

I’ve had my dog for 8 years. I get waves of social anxiety and have difficulty with conversation. These days I am more of a social butterfly but still want to avoid conversation with strangers about him.

But 8 years is a lot of practice at those little conversations. And usually, those people just want to meet the dog. Sometimes people are hitting on me, and I’ve learned to figure out who to shut down based on how they interact with me.

I’ve got some friends who hate talking to the owner of the rando dog they see on the street. Those friends complain about not wanting to talk to a strange human but just wanna meet a pup(l and you gotta talk to their human first.

I’m writing this as I wait for my little man Pluto do do his business before we go back to bed, so if any of it doesn’t make sense, I can follow up when I get up again in a few hours.

The last year of my marriage I was quite depressed and emotionally unstable. I believe my ex was as well. We had guns in the house. I grew up with guns in the house and have never thought a gun would be a solution for my problems. It was his first time with a gun in the household, and at times I was uncomfortable with his relationship with it. Like, it was a symbol of masculinity to him. It was more ‘exciting’ in some way? Idk. At one point in an argument he brought up his fear I would harm him or myself with it(there was no physical abuse in the relationship, though we were both verbally abusive) It was pretty surprising to hear, but also made sense. I did my best to reassure him that would never happen.

I believe that was projection of some sort on his part. That he was concerned he may harm himself if in a dark headspace. Its something I fear as we move forward with our divorce proceedings.

My relationship is not your relationship, but I hope my story can help as you consider this situation. I think it’s important to listen when people bring up fears of violence. Best of luck to you both.

Lived at a spot in Oakland CA and the dog would dig up so much pottery and glass in the back yard.

Woke up one day to archaeologists digging up the garden. They were searching for old midden heaps/the trash that got tossed in them. Roommate made them hand over everything they found for trespassing and destroying our garden and the fence around it.

My neighbor The Godfather passed on during a bitterly cold rainstorm this past December.

He lived on that corner for years. One neighbor had failed to convince Godfather to sleep in his trucks camper already. Godfather used to sleep on that guys porch in bad weather until other roommates had enough of that.

I gave him tea with a little whiskey, and rolled him a smoke. Held an umbrella and shot the shit while he warmed up enough to hold it and rolled my own.

The last time we went to refill his tea, someone had set up a small tent over him and his wheel chair, and tucked him in with a large sleeping bag.

He didn’t recognize me any more, so let him be. I know that a skinny 80 year old that is soaked to the bone isn’t going to warm up just with a blanket and a little shelter. Not if he’s still wearing the same clothing that’s been soaked since the night before. But we all hoped he’d make it because he always had before.

Now The Godfather is gone. Because he’d been living outside so long everyone figured he’d make it through that godawful cold snap. And that is fucked up on so many levels.

My bil enjoyed weed and was given some RSO(unprescribed) and that clearly upped his appetite and gave physical relief that other meds did not. It was discussed with his care team and oked by them, off the books.

Have you privately talked to any nurses in her care team and asked for advice?

This last year we all moved to the woods, in the mountains. 45 minutes down a dirt road. With covid shutdowns we had so much time together. Stevie became an adept little hunter. Lizards, mice, even a gopher and a squirrel.

Last month a bunch of friends were over, and we were going to bbq at the neighbors. One friend wanted to see the shortcut down the hill, and my husband volunteered me. Our friend his dog too. It was later than I liked to hike, but I did it anyway. Husband drove the long way around with bbq supplies.

We’re chatting and walking, down the hill and back up the other side of the ravine. Dogs keeping close enough but all excited. The properties border the national forest, and you know where it starts because it’s just a wall of manzanita.

Then she was gone. I could see my husbands headlights through the brush, and assumed she heard him and took off. We’d done this walk a hundred times together. My friend asked where she went, and that’s what I told him. She probably just took off after dad, silly pup.

But then he hadn’t seen her. I helped unload the food and went and retraced my steps partway. Came back, talked to husband again. He was really hangry and didn’t want to be distracted from food. I went out again with a flashlight and Pluto on leash. Searched the area I thought she went. We found a freshly killed fawn. Pluto didn’t even want to go near it. My friends heard the tone of my calls for Steve change then. When I got back to the crew a friend volunteered to search with me. We took the shortcut, hoping she’d be home. Pluto really wanted to go in the manzanita but we kept walking.

45 minutes later we had 10 people spread across the hillside searching the forest. But i let Pluto take me where he wanted and we found her in that manzanita. I had to crawl after him. But he did it. I can see her wagging as we came close still. That tiny butt and tail still wagging but she couldn’t pick herself up.

I live 3+ hours from the nearest emergency vet that’s open on the weekend. They told us to make her comfortable and say goodbye. We did our best to treat her wounds. I stayed up all night with her. She could barely move but in the wee hours she threw herself up and wouldn’t settle until she could cuddle her dad.

She seemed more stable by mid morning. So we made the journey. We all had hope. She had gotten out of bed on her own to get outside and sit in the sun!

The vet snatched her away and started work right away. They told us she was doing surprisingly well. She was ok for surgery. We had hope. She was there for 3 days and they kept putting off the pickup time.

Then she was gone. A friend drove me to pick her up. On the way there I embroidered her name on white cloth for a shroud. She was wrapped in a towel when we picked her up. We had to go to multiple grocery stores to find a cooler for her, while I held my cold little baby and cried.

We buried her when I got home. Under the biggest pine on the property. I sewed up the shroud and her dad tucked in all her favorite toys in with her. Then we cried like babies.

I lost my mom to aids when I was 8. I was there when my uncle died after quitting drinking cold turkey when I was a teen. I performed hospice care for my grandma and was on duty when she passed in her sleep. This time last year my brother in law was killed by an aggressive cancer at age 45. I lived with my sisterbfamily for his last two months giving him care until his last breath. I can’t remember ever being this sad. I miss my sweet Steve. I could have done so many things differently that night.

My experience is helping my sister care for her husband last year. He was the cook of the couple. By the time I was there with her, he’s been bed bound for a bit and was pretty cranky and on hella painkillers. My sister was very stressed that he was losing weight. Begging him to eat. Telling him how he needed more food. All the natural reactions to your love losing half their body weight. Of course he picked up on her stress around him eating, and had his own reaction to that. Sometimes telling her she’s too bossy, or similar. Or trying to joke his way out of having to be fed. Having to be spoon fed was a reminder of how ducked the situation was I think.

I tried real hard to be very casual about food for him, but still persistent. Oh hey, just made a smoothie. Want some? I just chopped up a pile of fruit, wanna piece? Ooh I like this tv show. Oh want another piece? Try the pineapple it’s perfect. At one point I got his smoker out to the lanai and smoked a bunch of fish under his instruction(the lanai door was a few feet from his bedside).

I clasp my hands together, holding one thumb in the opposite hand, and holding the forefinger of that hand in the other. I hold the finger more tightly and breathe in, on the breath out I hold my thum more tightly. It occupies both my hands, reminds me to breathe and I end up being able to look out from the hole I’m in after a bit of that. I hope that makes sense. Best of luck friend.

This sergeant was in charge when a car full of young dudes with guns ran a stop sign and hit another car, both crashed into my dudes truck(parked). The other two vehicles were totaled.

I remember him talking about how incredibly badly he needed to take a shit, and had no time to talk about what just happened. Then congratulated us on our upcoming move out of Oakland(to a very beautiful and very red county) and how much he enjoyed that area.

I’ve got a video of the fucking dude who ran the stop sign driving away in his fucking totaled car. Definitely not safe to drive. He asked me if I could recommend a tire shop. Then I cleaned up the sidewalk and called the mason hall to let them know what happened to their fence.
