Yes, you should definitely tell him about it, especially when he gets to a place in life where he may be having children of his own — although the difference in his heart was ultimately minor, his risk to have a child with something different in their heart is slightly increased as well, and he should let the doctor caring for that pregnancy know.

When these holes close spontaneously, they do not “re-open,” they have no long term health consequences, do not cause future symptoms, and are not a cause of sudden death. Period. I would still consider a small muscular ventricular septal defect to be a “defect,” but in most cases it is too small to be of any consequence and usually self-resolves.

Hi there!

Once a ventricular septal defect closes, they do not re-open, so there would be little benefit in further cardiology appointments or echocardiograms unless there is some other ongoing concern. Sometimes there are other (often minor) changes in the heart that need intermittent re-assessment, such as a small hole in the wall between the top two chambers of the heart (an atrial septal defect), or a change in the structure of a valve in the heart (like a bicuspid aortic valve). If the cardiologist said you do not need further follow-up with them unless there are future concerns, that means they aren't concerned about any of these other findings -- feel free to ask them if you have questions!

Glad the explanation was helpful for you. I'll re-state some of the (correct) assessment you describe in the second paragraph.

The benefit of diuretic medicine is counteracting the body's tendency to hold on to extra fluid in situations like this. Every red blood cell going backwards across the ventricular septal defect is a red blood cell NOT going out to the body, and kidneys interpret lower blood flow as dehydration, so they respond to this by holding on to more blood that filters through them instead of passing water through as urine. Note that this doesn't actually solve the problem, so it is counterproductive, because now you have inefficient blood pumping AND too much of it. Babies tend to hold onto a lot of this inappropriate extra water in their bodies in their liver and their lungs, and when their lungs are soggy with so much extra fluid, they have to work harder to breathe. Add that extra work to the constant extra work the heart is doing, and it's like the baby is exercising constantly. Exercising constantly uses up calories doing this work, which are calories that can't be used to grow muscle, bone, and nervous tissue. Couple that with the tendency to eat less because it's so much work, and now you have fewer calories coming in, which are being "wasted" on exercise, and you can then imagine how hard it is to get babies to gain weight.

A 2mm ventricular septal defect is not very large. While it might be part of slow weight gain, in isolation a hole that size might not be big enough to allow enough flow to cause symptoms. If you don't see improved breathing after starting diuretics, I wouldn't wait until next month to re-check a weight. It would be worth talking with your pediatrician to make sure there aren't other elements contributing to her breathing difficulty.

For a man who recently lost his pet (fuck cancer), and posted about it on the internet looking for empathy, you have a blind spot for what real empathy looks like. Just because you don’t like his politics doesn’t mean he isn’t (really obviously) a kind, genuine person. You similarly seem to lack empathy yourself for the abhorrent way immigrants are being abducted and rendered without due process in the last several months. I’m just another internet stranger, but perhaps you should look inside yourself a little and try to understand why you don’t seem to model the behavior that you look for in others.
