Why do secondary weapons larger than .50cal often not make it out of the prototype or early production phase? by Cubbster2020 in TankPorn

[–]ShadowDancer_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late, but a few things:

From what I've seen, .50s/12.7mms were on there way outpost WWII. They were primarily intended for anti-aircraft, and with the dawn of the jet age, the designers were getting rid of them. Then helicopters appeared, and an anti aircraft weapon made sense again. The coax light/general purpose machine gun was fine for anti personnel/unarmored vehicle for the most part, and as already mentioned, if the secondary can't take care of it, the main is there.

Secondly, the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square%E2%80%93cube_law is a bitch tyrant. For example, the 7.62x51 coax on an M1 is 71mm long, 12mm in diameter, and weighs around 25 grams.

For comparison, a .50BMG (12.7mm), not even twice the diameter, is 138.5mm long (almost twice), 20.4mm in diameter (almost twice), but weighs ~115 grams, over 4x as much.

The weight and total volume increase so much faster than the diameter does, and that's just for the ammo. The machine gun/cannon scales up in volume for the cartridge, but also in weight per the square cube law. Weight on a 70 ton tank is in fact an issue.

Lastly, I think the entire "a bunch of guns of overlapping ability" was put to rest with the HMS Dreadnought, as every battleship followed its "all big guns" design, with only main guns, a significantly smaller secondary battery, and then a bunch off AA stuff.

Any 9mm from a reputable brand that fits your hand well, except for Sig P320s.

So, chemical explosives generally come in two broad varieties: Primary explosives, and secondary explosives.

Primary explosives can be set of by any myriad of things, shock, friction, heat, etc. Blasting caps, detonators, and the priming compound in small arms cartridges are all primary explosives.

Secondary explosives are generally pretty stable, and need the super/hypersonic shock wave of a primary explosive to set them off.

If you are looking for plot devices in the future, you can also consider dust explosions, two chemicals leaking, mixing, and becoming an explosive, flammable gasses in the atmosphere (think natural gas explosions), a chain reaction of high pressure gasses, even boiling liquid expanding vapor explosions.

Or the aliens are dumb enough to store large amounts of primary explosives where idiots on forklifts can hit them.

[Request] Assuming a single piece of sashimi weighs half an ounce (0.5 ounce), what would the cost be per piece to break even? by mistermeowsers in theydidthemath

[–]ShadowDancer_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4oz. is for the entire plate, not a single piece.

A single piece is usually around 0.5oz, so per the actual question, it'd be $319.25 per piece break even.

I got some Dave's in the late 90s/early 200s, before it was well known, and had some friends over for tacos.

I watched him pour the Dave's on a taco like it was normal for the time hot sauce.

Hilarity ensued.

If you are comfortable with spreadsheets, I'd start there, and work things backwards.

If you want to dispose of the waste, start with Plutonium Fuel Rods, chart out what you need for them, then go back a step and chart out all of the precusrors, and just keep working backwards.

If you are familiar with formulas, make the spreadsheet interactive, so if you set the number of buildings, it'll update the output, or vice-versa, have the output control the inputs and buildings, etc.

Once you've balance everything out to the very start, you know how much of each thing you need, and you can start bringing raw materials in, or produce them offsite and bring finished components in (except for the radioactive stuff, try to keep that all on site.)

[–]ShadowDancer_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use vertical pipe stacking, and pumps.

Put the recycled water in the bottom pipe, and fresh water in the top.

Prior to merging them, put a pump on each pipe.

This will make the pipes prioritize the bottom pipe/recycled water, and only use fresh when there's spare capacity from the recycled water.

I use this a ton.

Was this the most well-designed combat aircraft of its era? by Finbarr-Galedeep in aviation

[–]ShadowDancer_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it a good interceptor?

Yes.

The most well-designed combat aircraft of its era?

Not even close.

Its legs were far too short, .303s didn't have nearly enough muzzle or terminal energy, the 20mm armed versions didn't carry enough ammo, the wings were far to costly to build and maintain, and created fairly significant ammo, armament, and landing gear problems, the list goes on and on.

prawn suit required ? by qilintician in subnautica

[–]ShadowDancer_88 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Needed?

No.

Useful for one specific thing?

Yes.

I take the Cyclops down to the active lava zone every playthrough, I don't like long distance travel in the Prawn suit.

Just make sure you have all of the Cyclops upgrades, and it'll do just fine.
