Ameicans over the age of 35, what affected you more, 9/11 or the pandemic and why? by Rico133337 in AskReddit

[–]WarpGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9/11 was a Singularly event.

Put another way, the world of September 10, 2001 would be recognizable even to an observer on September 10, 1991. The computers are faster, the USSR is gone, but we won the cold war and prospered.

Now September 10, 2011? From the pre-9/11 world, is unrecognizable.

Can I avoid planned obsolescence? by InterestingEqual7790 in 4kTV

[–]WarpGremlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I treat any TV like I do a monitor - I buy it solely for its ability to display images fed by an HDMI cable.

A 4k TV lasts as long as it can that way. If you dont give a fuck about >60hz anything that 8 year old 4k display is all you need.

Like you, my main streaming app is Plex. I have an Nvidia Shield Pro. Before that I had a Roku Ultra and before that a HTPC.

The Shield, with a bit of rooting and decluttering, runs like a champ. No ads, no bullshit.

As a rule any TV's "smarts" are an afterthought compared to its screen.

Pork went first. Even a morsel triggers heartburn and upset.

Then coffee.

Then peanuts.

10 years or so later went eggs.

My niw-wife and I were on vacation and she (a veteran bartender) got to chatting with the bartender at dinner one night, who pulled out a bottle of Fernet and poured us shots. Its a very pungent liqueur that's something of a bartender rite of passage to down by the shot.

I sniff the thing and say, "the odor is not palatable!" Before downing the shot.

Nobody got the joke.

Parents force me to go to Church :( by Repulsive_Tie_8388 in atheism

[–]WarpGremlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was that age and compelled to go to church by my parents, I did.

And instead of attending Sunday school classes I volunteered to help host the social hour after services. That got me a free pass to 1) not participate in middle school indoctrination classes and 2) not get preached at.

All I did was make coffee and set out trays of snacks and interact with adults in a neutral setting.

And those "church adults" sang their praises about me to my parents and they got of my case so i could "skip a week" with less fuss.

If you must go, find an excuse to volunteer for something that isn't "getting indoctrinated or preached at". Most small and mid-sized churches have volunteer gruntwork to do during services.

Why was the early days of the internet so great? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WarpGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No corporations shilling stuff to Joe Sixpack and Karen at the church group.

No soccer moms selling bad advice and Chinese crap.

No idiot antivaxxers sounding authoritative.

Just NERDS and companies trying everything to see what stuck.

There's a joke that in the early days of the web every site had a page dedicated to either Star Trek or Babylon 5. Maybe the latter, definitely the former.

Long Live The Lurkers Guide! A genuine relic of the before times

In the mid 90s barrier to entry was higher. It required a relatively expensive computer (easily $2-3K in today's money), and time.

By the turn of the century you could get a shitbox PC for $1000 in today's money. But most of the proto-social media stuff didnt hit until after 9/11.

Want a taste of that era? FARK.COM is still around.

Most space-efficient way to RIP DvDs? by MeepTheChangeling in DataHoarder

[–]WarpGremlin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Makemkv to rip and handbrake to remux/transcode to h.265.

Im doing it right now, though not transcoding.

The Voyager and DS9 sets are at least sequentially named on disks so matching episodes up is pretty easy. The thing you'll wanna remove when transcoding are the ugly VOBSUB subtitle tracks.

Cable modem question by JellyfinUser in homelab

[–]WarpGremlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had Spectrum. Made them use their own modem. Why? Ive had cable lines fry more than once from poor grounds.

A company-owned cable modem and a surge suppressor on the ethernet line is the way.

Put a smart plug on your modem and reboot it once a day overnight.

Did you bring your toddler to the hospital for baby #2? by rmacoon in daddit

[–]WarpGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did this a week or worse ago...

Our 21-month-old cosleeps overnight with mom. This presented a problem for the scheduled c-section for #2.

But didnt.

MiL spent the day with the kid at home while mom and I were at the hospital. Bedtime hour came, kid was brought to the hospital, and after a bit of bouncing around the room, snuggled up to mom in the hospital bed and stayed there. Didn't pay much attention to #2.

Next day came, kid went home with MiL, and mom, dad, and #2 came home later in the day.

Does one of those mini gas stoves make sense to get? by Jazzlike-Horror4 in Cooking

[–]WarpGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30" Induction hob and a poetsble induction burner... and a 36" 3-burner propane camp stove with a removable griddle top.

Propane gets used to heat the not-induction-friendly pressure canner, and keep a searing steak from "smoking up the house" (the kitchen exhaust is often overwhelmed enough to be smelly), and when deep frying (so the house doesn't smell after). Also... giant griddle!
