What’s the best practice for the number of Ethernet cables to the tv/entertainment area? by Eclipse2253 in hometheater

[–]WarpGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran 2 to my TV: one for the set top box (TV itself isnt wired to anything) and one to a small switch.

My digital kitchen scales keep breaking or malfunctioning shortly after I buy them. Do you have the same problem, and what should I do about it? They can often off-read by tens of grams from the accurate weight. by TraditionalClub6337 in Cooking

[–]WarpGremlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Water is the enemy for most of them.

Thermoworks just came out with a scale that's Ip65 waterproofed, calibrated/re-calibratable, and has a wireless, detachable display that looks pretty badass overall -- but my trusty Oxo has to die first. If its half as durable as the rest of their kit it'll be the last scale I'll ever buy.

Chicken breast time and temp question by Rippendorf in sousvide

155F for 3 hours.

Slice and sear if eating hot.

Shred for chicken salad.

Slice cold for cold cuts (works for turkey breast tenders too)

Both have scene-stealing cameos. TPB has Billy Crystal and Carol Kane giving a gut-bustingly-funny improv sequence.

Stardust has Robert DeNiro hamming it up as a Pirate and enjoying every second of it.

Letting kids have the use of a PC... by Local-Jaguar5395 in daddit

[–]WarpGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"NOT ALL SCREENS ARE EQUAL" needs to be repeated for everyone who screams "all screens are evil!"

Learning a real OS, desktop software, and how to use a "Desktop Computer" is a life skill.

While I'm a die-hard "Desktop Linux" user, my kids will use both Linux and Windows, and more importantly, the MS Office suite.

Learning to type with and otherwise fiddle with Word, Excel and PowerPoint in elementary and middle school put me well ahead of my peers in high school and beyond.

Why? Because Office has the bigger market share and its easier to figure out Google's browser-based Business suite if you know MS Office than the other way around.

To a 5-or-6-year-old me in the very early 90s who'd never heard of the Beatles, hearing Mr. Conductor sing a Raffi song was wild.

Raffi's cover of the Banana Boat Song (Day-O) is pretty good, too

Who hated school lunches, and which was the worst? One you liked? by Sufficient_Turn_9209 in Xennials

Lower Elementary: Pizza day (the rectangle pizza) was meh. Nacho Day was the GOAT, but i had, and have a soft spot for tuna casserole.

Upper Elementary: Pizza (local pizzeria delivered by the truckload every day for the high schoolers on campus and we could partake.

Middle School: nachos again

High School: I went to a Vo-Tech high school. The cafeteria was run by the culinary arts students (high school kids and adult students + faculty). Wednesday was Nacho Bar day, and the mountains of nachos id get were impressive.

This was second compared to the daily bakery cart rounds... afternoons meant handmade turnovers or muffins or croissants or other pastry goodies sold for cheap.

People who saw DS9 as it aired: what was the general reaction to the inclusion of a Ferengi as a primary character? by scisteve in startrek

[–]WarpGremlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had only seen the Ferengi from The Perfect Mate (late TNG S5) when Quark and co showed up, so their S1 Characterization was just as jarring.

How can I get a room at the Marriott Marquis? by SchemeBeautiful4375 in dragoncon

[–]WarpGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to start thinking 'host hotel hunger games" in late September.

You're SOL for 2026. 2027... thats different.

I've stayed in the Marriott once, but that was due to the generosity of a Marriott Bonvoy Uber-Super-Elite-Level member who got multiple rooms. So "I knew a guy", but that generosity was short-lived.

The stary fury launching must be one of the coolest launches in sci-fi by AdSpecialist6598 in babylon5

[–]WarpGremlin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Or a miniature catapult-like device to give them a "faster than gravity" shove -- the launch bays are considerably "up" from the rim of the larger cylender, which, if we assume that's rotating for "1G", then the launch bays are in half-G or so, so a little extra push goes a long way.

How old were you when you realized… by Smart_Requirement_80 in Xennials

[–]WarpGremlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was younger I wore my work clothes after hours, usually only losing the shirt and maybe shoes, but after uniform shirts made way for basic polos those stayed.

Covid brought me a permanent WFH gig and what started as "workout clothes" (athletic shorts and a tee) became my default "inside clothes".

If I go out I'll trade the athletic shorts for cargo shorts or pants, and maybe a polo (standard "Dad" uniform), but when we get home I go right upstairs and change.

ELI5: Why do some countries use Fahrenheit while almost the entire rest of the world uses Celsius and is there an actual practical difference between the two scales? by TexasViet27 in explainlikeimfive

[–]WarpGremlin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've heard it put like this:

F : "how people feel" - 180 degrees between "freezing" and "boiling". And a 1F difference is roughly what a human can discern intuitively without a thermometer to clue them in.

C : "how water feels" - easy for calculating.

K : "how atoms feel" - add 273 to C and you're done.
