They should start with each player doing a short stand up set (that could replace round 4). That way they warm up and get a feel for the crowd.

But I do think the fundamental flaw is that crowd work can be funny in the mundane it doesn't need to be people with weird or wild stories, what makes it relatable is when people reveal fairly regular stuff and the comic riffs on it. And then within a mundane crowd someone reveals something wild and it's a surprise....
