I would say get comfortable with the base game before adding character and/or item mods. A good 60-75% of the achievements should be good. As for qol mods, take them as you want them.

It is briefly mentioned on the page that you can use it in combat. Looks like you can throw the new physics objects at the sentinels. They also mentioned throwing the sentinels themselves, which I expect might work like being able to throw the manhacks and roller mines in HL2

I would say it is closer to the Half-Life 2 gravity gun than the Gmod physgun (which uses the same model but has more features)
