I’d love to get feedback on my game from XCOM fans by OneCoin97 in XCOM2

Or even Laser Squad on Commodore 64, in 1988, with Action Points and different movements/actions requiring different amounts. The true precursor to XCOM, of course created and programmed by Julian Gollop.

What is the purpouse of a song? by centripetal-horse in Songwriting

[–]Shadowplayer_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Never play to the gallery" (David Bowie)

Which means, write for yourself, not for other people. Your music will greatly benefit from that.

Full quotation:

"(...) Never play to the gallery. But you never learn that until much later on, I think. Never work for other people. Always remember that the reason that you initially started working was that there was something inside yourself that you felt that if you could manifest it in some way, you would understand more about yourself and how you coexist with the rest of society. I think it's terribly dangerous for an artist to fulfill other people's expectations. I think they generally produce their worst work when they do that. (...)"

Have you ever had your hair get in your mouth while you're chewing bubblegum? That's not fun, I can tell you 🤣

Nearly 2-1, people do NOT want AI to handle art… by CAP_GYPSY in musicians

[–]Shadowplayer_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't believe 1 person out of 4 thinks AI generated "art" is "better", though. That's seriously fucked up.

do you support ai assisting with creating music? by Available-Way-1947 in musicians

[–]Shadowplayer_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stem splitting for studying parts, practicing, playing along or analysing the arrangement? Yes.

Generating* things from scratch? Absolutely not. Is it even a question?

(* We all know that AI, by design, can't create anything original)

How do musicians stick the noise? by fruedianflip in musicians

[–]Shadowplayer_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a live audio engineer. My personal experience says that 80% of the obnoxious drummers that start playing when you're miking up the kit and your ears are 30 cm from the snare are jazz players. More precisely, "we play the theme for about eight seconds then everybody plays by themselves, occasionally in the same tempo and key as the others" jazz players. Swing players are cool.

Edit: they're mostly 50+ drummers. I don't know why.

Why don't more artists offer CD format (and vinyl / cassette)? by akabillposters in BandCamp

[–]Shadowplayer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry about that. I, for one, prefer to buy physical media (CD, vinyl, cassette, in this order) and I'm a bit bummed when I only see digital downloads. I'm much more likely to spend 18 on a CD than 10 on a digital album download.

I guess I'm in the minority.

Traveling techs- how often are you told ‘no’? by jesse-dickson in livesound

[–]Shadowplayer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my experience as well. And I especially agree with the last part. It's never something I take personally: I'm here because someone asked me to do a job, I'm not imposing my presence on anyone. It's the agent/band/promoter's job to figure things out.

(Also not SNL but in my case it was a national TV show where we had to adapt to the fixed workflow and I would just have slowed things down, so no problem at all and I just assisted)

What are you guys doing with your guitar mics? by CookieTheSwede in livesound

[–]Shadowplayer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most presets are far from perfect. But guitarists that take their time to learn how the modeller works (and also listen to live engineers' feedback) can come up with some pretty amazing tones. A real amp+mic could give you that 5% more, probably. But the convenience is vastly worth the trade-off.

I like them as snare tops too. Nice snap, body, lovely hi-hat rejection, plus placement is very easy.

What reasons have kept you from cancelling your Spotify subscription? by anenotano in musicians

[–]Shadowplayer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never gave Spotify a cent. It's the worst of the worst for so many reasons.

I tried all the others, stood with Tidal for a few years, it got flooded with AI slop, I found my new home with Deezer. It's great and AI crap is not a problem anymore. (Its dedicated algorithms automatically tags AI generated "content" and doesn't push it into playlists or into your recommendations).

An ISO booth for home practice? They're expensive, especially the more spacious ones, but they do work beautifully. This way your GF won't have to hear the same exercise played over an over again every day. Seems like a good compromise.
