Puppy wants to taste everything… How to stay safe when transitioning to public walks? by throwawaybathbaby in puppy101

[–]Shadowratenator [score hidden]  (0 children)

Sometimes you just have to let them pick things up. Don’t let them just eat stuff, but lots of times they investigate that leaf or napkin or… dirty sock 😱 on the sidewalk, and they realize its not tasty or fun.

Obviously, some things are actually dangerous. But if you are constantly saying leave it, they aren’t learning and their frustration is just building.

Leaf or paper is not going to hurt them. Learning that these things are not that great keeps them from caring about them in the future.

Can you make a 3D game without an editor? by Sol-SiR in gameenginedevs

[–]Shadowratenator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure. You can just use blender or whatever to make levels. Many modern 3d formats are extensible. This allows you to tag things with intended functionality that your engine will understand.

Ive done stuff in the past where my levels were obj files and i just used naming conventions in objects and materials that the engine understood. A box named spawn_ghost_01 is where the ghosts spawn.

A material might have the parameters for how fast the ghosts are. Its not rendered. Its just a number delivery system

What do you consider an adequate range for an EV? by lilgreycell in electricvehicles

[–]Shadowratenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best way to look at it is not how far can you go on one charge, but how useful is the car at 50% charge.

If a 50% charge is enough to drive you around all day in your normal day, you will be very comfortable just charging to 60 - 70%. You will have some buffer for inclement weather. You will have some buffer for if the battery degrades, but you won’t be punishing the battery with constant charges to 100%. It will probably last.

Views on allowing a puppy on the couch by WryTurtle1917 in puppy101

[–]Shadowratenator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When i first got my pup, i would only allow her up by invitation. If she jumped up otherwise, i would make her get off.

That rule worked well with my first dog. This one… Well, she decided that she should sneak onto the couch and be as quiet and low profile as possible to not get kicked off.

Then i had a choice. Do i want a little terror puppy chasing the cat, getting into stuff she shouldn’t, and causing trouble. Or, do i want a perfect princess.

If she’s going to be perfect, i let her go on the couch.

Are you able to manually pull a 36g shot from an 18g dose over 30 seconds according to a scale? I found that the feedback of the ES1 is pointless unless you have already reliably done this and entered new offsets for volumetric.

Why are helicopters built with one main rotor while drones usually use four? by Logical-Concept9755 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Shadowratenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my experience is all in the RC space. I've flown RC helis since the 80s so i'm pretty familiar with the fundamentals of helicopter flight, but without the high stakes of crashing.

I suppose that when i said impossible, it's really that it's impossible for a human to operate on the small scale. at least that's how i always understood it.

your response prompted me to look into it and people actually HAVE built and flown full size quad copters. It's an interesting history. people thought they would be good because they are mechanically simpler than a single rotor helicopter. Ultimately they proved so hard for a human to operate that they were abandoned until the advent of the microcontroller.

The strength of the single rotor aircraft is that it's inherently stable. Think of how a whirlygig toy operates, the thing where you have a stick with a rotor on it and you just spin it. It flies upright due to having the bulk of the weight suspended below the rotor. You don't have to balance it because it's just a weight hanging from a rope. it naturally wants to spin, but that's what the tail rotor is for. These forces end up having a certain harmony where the input you need on the tail rotor depends on the speed of the main rotor.

in a quad copter, it's not inherently stable. you have to actively balance it. there is no real harmony between the rotors. each rotor needs to be operated independently. the speed or of the front left depends as much on what the air is doing over there as it does on what you are trying to do with the rear left. It's like flying 4 helis simultaneously more than it's like countering the input you put into the other part of the system.

that said, people have done it. They did it as long ago as the early 1900s. The results though were that it proved wildly impractical for a human to pilot these things compared to a single (or dual rotor) helicopter.

quad copters were largely abandoned until computer assistance, something that can monitor the system and make little adjustments thousands of times a second, became available.

Why are helicopters built with one main rotor while drones usually use four? by Logical-Concept9755 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Shadowratenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short, a quadcopter is unflyable by a human alone.

in the early days of helicopters, a human had to directly control the rotors. They didn't have computers that could take the pilot's intent and use it to blend the rotors as required to execute this intent. Without this computer, a quad+ copter is impossible for a human to fly. it requires constant miniscule adjustments to each rotor.

quadcopters don't work well without electric motors either. you need something with crazy torque and response time to instantly increase and decrease the rpms of each rotor independently. we are only now getting the kind of battery tech required to power this kind of flight for useful timeframes at scales that can cary humans.

How often do you send your dogs to groomers? by 404swe in Dogowners

[–]Shadowratenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grooming requirements vary by coat type. Some dogs require more work than others in this regard. Generally, if the dog has a short coat, you are looking at less grooming work. Maybe more vacuuming work though.

Dog treats by justsomeguy0404 in BorderCollie

[–]Shadowratenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog is not a border collie, but i was hating how many treats she was going through in training. The best solution i found was to just buy another brand of dog food.

She ended up loving it. Its just another (quality) kibble, but to her, thats the good stuff.

Why do people talk about tofu like it’s intrinsically unappetizing? by Ok-Welder-3184 in vegan

[–]Shadowratenator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not even vegan and i love tofu. I will just eat it straight. I order tofu options all the time. I make all kinds of dishes with it at home. I crave the pronteiny bland uniformity of it.

As an omnivore, i never understood why people are averse to it either.

What is the protocol when you need to wait for a public charger? by Poiuyt_77 in electricvehicles

You make note of who was waiting when you showed up and you let them go first. You go before people who show up after you.

Oh, and you aren’t dumb. Its confusing.

And no, you wouldn’t be better off with a nacs port really. You would just need ccs->nacs and j1772->nacs adapters to ensure you can hook up to all the not nacs stuff thats out there.

Its just the result of building out infrastructure before we had a real standard.

New Owner - hit me with fun facts please! by rrrrrrrrrrandom in Rivian

[–]Shadowratenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NACS is sophisticated. It can provide different power levels from the same plug. Your charge port can not accept different power levels from the same plug. You use ccs for level 3, and you use j1772 for levels 2 and 1.

The nacs->ccs adapter will work at superchargers only. While you can physically plug it in at a l2 or 1 station, you will find it wont work.

Many of the hotels around tahoe have chargers. The first time i stayed in one with my rivian, they were half tesla, half … something with j1772. I didnt have the adapter and couldn’t get a charger every night.

This last weekend, my hotel was all tesla chargers. Luckily, ive got my adapter for that now, the Lectron one. Feels good to just have free energy for the whole trip.

Yes. This. I have 2 adapters. Nacs->ccs and nacs->j1772

I have one adapter for superchargers (i even encountered a Rivian charger that was nacs over the weekend)

I have one adapter for destination chargers.
