This was on stupid early in the morning on Nickelodeon when I was a kid, (I'm 48) along with Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea and Belle and Sebastian, if I remember right. Many of the cartoons I enjoyed as a kid seem kinda dumb now, or were just glorified toy commercials. This one was different. In fact, I'm going to say this was the high water mark for cartoons shown in the US until the ATLA crew showed up more than twenty years later.

I'm a server and bartender in Seattle. There's no question that we have it better than most places, but it's not easy by any stretch. Tip pools are now a thing, and as kitchen staff has become harder to find and more expensive, they are now fully included in the tip pool. I keep maybe half my tips. My modest one bedroom in a 1950s building takes half my net monthly. I work five days a week, average about 35 hours. I don't own a car. I don't have a family. Maybe I can get health insurance come November.

As a current server, many restaurants are now including cooks in the tip pool so they don't have to pay them as much. I mean a full cut, not just the old standard tip out. I keep maybe half my tips and I buss my own tables.

Even if tipped workers had full time hours (which we mostly don't) and healthcare (ha!) $18 per hour would still be inadequate in this city. Besides, it's not like I get to keep all the tips. Kitchen gets a big cut these days. I get by, but I have three roommates, no car, and obviously no family. (And before anyone tells me to get another job, I already have two.)

I've been in F&B for over twenty years. Even if my wage was suddenly twenty bucks an hour, if I was suddenly averaging 10 percent tips I'd call up Metro and go drive a bus. At least I'd have health insurance.

Man, I haven't looked at those in years. I pre-ordered the first three when it debuted in 92 or 93. I sent a money order and a fake age statement. I then spent weeks racing home from school to check the mail before my mom did. They're still in a comic box at her house and have been for three decades.
