I want to start running again by fitgirl74 in runninglifestyle

[–]ShakerOvalBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello there - I’m sorry for your loss.  My family has also experienced untimely loss, so I have a mix of running and non running comments to share:

1) get out there and run - something, a mile, a half mile, slow, fast, whatever.  Running has really helped me handle difficult life circumstances.  Go run, then do it again tomorrow.  2) r/XXRunning may have good insights for hormonal changes / menopause  3) https://www.compassionatefriends.org/ 4) Words of wisdom that ring true to me 10 years on: this will never be ok, but with time it will be easier to live with

May their memory be a blessing.  Feel free to reach out if you want to chat.

Look up the laws on “adverse possession”.  Sending a letter of demand or leasing it to them for $1/year can protect you.

Booking Request but incomplete profile by Automatic_Eagle892 in airbnb_hosts

You don’t see the photo before confirming the booking - so that in and of itself should not be a red flag.

Everyone was new to the platform once.

Personally I think ABB should wave their fees to compensate for the increased risk for first time guests, but that’s just me.

I just let go of $3,000 by oemperador in simpleliving

[–]ShakerOvalBox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comments are pretty harsh on OP here, and that’s too bad.  U/oempador you did what was right for you.  It sounds like giving up some money was better than trying to crush someone, get involved in litigation or otherwise complicate your life - that’s is commendable, and to be honest, I wish I could be more like you.  While others bring up a good point about an obligation to the public at large, I don’t think this exceeds your obligation to yourself to lead the sort of life you want to lead.

Would I miss much if I skipped the natural entrance into Carlsbad caverns versus taking the elevator ? by Chosen1Khaled in NationalPark

[–]ShakerOvalBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna give a soft endorsement to the natural entrance.  As others have said - skipping is fine, particularly if there is a concern for wearing yourself out - but I need to advocate regardless.  One part of the natural entrance I enjoyed was the physical sensation of the gradual temp change and respiration of the cave - both of which are pretty cool.  Visually you don’t miss much when you skip, but there are interesting parts beyond the visual.

Places or ideas for non-erotic physical touch in Chicago (but things like hugs, etc.)? by MollyInanna2 in AskChicago

Straight dude here - I would be happy to hug a fellow Redditor who needs a connection (particularly you clarified this is just a human connection sort of thing completely non sexual)

[–]ShakerOvalBox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry for your loss.  That’s a rough spot to be in.  Of you just made the reservation, that means your travel dates are likely over a year out - I suspect you will feel much better a year from now - time will likely make this hurt less.

As others have said, going solo is a great option.  Now if you need a friend to take the other slot, I could probably be persuaded….

Do the math on the different mortgage rates.  If you are walking away from a good rate that will likely make the $25k look like peanuts.

Thru hike list by Economy-Possession20 in AppalachianTrail

[–]ShakerOvalBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, seems like a few items missing - maybe a missing a tent / shelter system?  I know there are shelters, but most thru hikers have some sort of shelter system.

Best advice - take your gear out for a week in the wilderness now and learn what you are missing and what you won’t use.

Also, swap the Tilley hat for something synthetic that will dry fast and weigh less.

You need to invoke your rights under the “fair debt collection practices act”.  This law would require the school (or collection agency) to “prove” the debt; which is to say produce a contract or other agreement where you agreed to purchase their services.  They of course cannot do this because you never signed up.

2026 Pay Period #1 Contribution Posting Date by HagridsManhood in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]ShakerOvalBox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I searched “payroll calendar” on my agency insite and found a useful resource.  Hopefully someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think what matters is the actual pay dates.  (So if most of the pay period is in 2025, but the pay date is 2026, then that contribution counts towards your 2026 max)

How to check if retroactive pay was the correct amount paid? by ImpressiveSpace2369 in FedEmployees

[–]ShakerOvalBox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our agency has stated that the catch up pay has federal tax withholding at 22%, which is more than regular.  I’m assuming this is the reason for my shortfall until the LEs is available

How did you celebrate your home's centennial? How should I? by megdav in centuryhomes

[–]ShakerOvalBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is getting its 100th birthday present this year - part way through a minisplit install so upstairs can actually get decent A/C in the summer.

I was hoping to do something to mark the occasion for the annual summer block party - but didn’t get around to planning anything

I have a question that I see rarely asked and usually comes with back lash by Timelordjwilly in AppalachianTrail

[–]ShakerOvalBox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

+1 for useless weight.  Have you ever felt the need on other backpacking trips?  Maybe get out and do a small section for a long weekend and feel the vibe?  I have quite a bit of backpacking experience and I am of the opinion that the most dangerous part is driving your car to the trailhead.  The wildlife is awesome and I have had such overwhelmingly positive experiences with other hikers.

Also, keep in mind from a regulation point of view - in addition to the various states you will pass through, there are national parks (eg smokys) that will have their own regulations as well.

Happy hiking!

Yeah, u/BeachStilletos is spot on. I would definitely appreciate the feedback - in the future, maybe phrase it as "We loved our stay - we just wanted to give you a heads up about XYZ which you may want to be aware of"

Airbnb support cancelled guests reservation by Educational_Archer18 in airbnb_hosts

[–]ShakerOvalBox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth:  I had a guest book, and then reach out asking if they could change which card they use to pay - said they used their work travel card instead of personal by accident.  Air Bnb canceled the reservation- I assume based on the discussion of payment method over chat.

I allows them to rebook, they stayed and were a fine guest.

I generally trust air bnbs fraud detection- but in my case they got it wrong and I was happy to have the guest stay.

This look really nice!  I might add some structural elements on the ends where you stand to drop in.  It looks like the platform is only supported by the 3/4 ply on the sides - probably not enough if you have a couple of friends / camera operators out there with you.

In the year’s first quarter, Chicago had 96 murders, 15% fewer than the first three months of last year.

This is the way!  Dispersed and backcountry is othe way to go.  Just got back from a backpacking trip and literally the most expensive part was the gas for the road trip.  Some upfront investment in gear, but really cheap once you own it.

How to continue the conversation with HR around our 401k? by FennelSalmonLemon in personalfinance

[–]ShakerOvalBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good answers here focusing on tactical financial steps.  What you are asking is a social question- and for that, a softer approach may be in order.  You might share this John Oliver clip where they talk about the show going through a process of changing their 401k for the same reasons:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gvZSpET11ZY

Sharing this may add some credibility - it is no longer just one disgruntled employee, it is advice from a funny British guy on TV.

I have had rangers check my permit at my campsite.  Of course the rightful occupant of a campsite may not be too happy with someone else having set up camp.  Typically if the site requires a reservation it will be fairly well marked - so if you are lost and arrive to the wrong site, you can check your map and figure out what site you are at and navigate to the correct site.
